Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Thomas Phillips (Oct 29) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "On a cold, crisp evening in Kennington, Tom and I found ourselves picking up from where we left off at our last meeting: strong, attritional tennis from both ends - and some ferocious winners from Tom. Lots of close games in each set; I just managed to grab the first with a late break, before Tom levelled things up with faultless play in the second. At 3-2 in the third it looked like we were heading for a very tight finish, but then Tom broke his second string of the evening and had to finish the match with my (old, cumbersome) spare racket - which hampered his play sufficiently for me to claim the win. Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Simon Wood (Oct 24) 6-2, 3-0 Simon Wood Retired

Player Comments:

  • "Massive kudos to Simon for turning up despite feeling under the weather, especially at the end of such a grey, wet day. We've had some exceptionally tight battles before (numerous third set tie-breaks!) so I could tell that he wasn't at 100% for this match. Despite this, he fought on in his characteristically competitive way, and the scoreline masks the number of deuce-games that we played. Totally understandably he retired mid-way through the third set; looking forward to playing again soon."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Tom Harvey (Oct 21) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "As always, a good tussle against Tom, even if the greasy court didn’t help either of us to play our best tennis. Both sets were close, and I was consistently burnt by Tom’s scorching groundstrokes - and had his serve been firing as powerfully as it usually does I would have been in even greater trouble. Look forward to next time!"  -- Timothy

Paolo Giua bt Timothy Jones (Oct 16) 7-5, 6-0
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Simon Wood (Oct 10) 6-1, 5-7, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "Knowing each other’s game well, we both implemented some crafty tactics, which made for some entertaining and intricate points, but gruelling long at times. The second set in particular proved to be an attritional affair and ran on for well over an hour. We were unable to fit the third set in and unfortunately the match came down to the lottery of a tie break, which went all the way and I was lucky to scrape the win. "  -- Tom

Reveal CommentThomas Phillips bt David Jovic (Oct 5) 3-6, 6-0, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Very close game with David - it could easily have gone the other way. A badly timed string snap for David played its part in shifting momentum right at the close of the first set. Well played - looking forward to the next one!"  -- Thomas

Reveal CommentTimothy Jones v Venelin Papazov (Sep 10) 2-6, 7-5, 5-5 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "An epic first encounter between Venelin and me - I was trounced in the first set, with his big shots preventing me from getting into any kind of rhythm. It looked like he might run away with the second set too, but I managed to get a bit more into the match and clinch the set. It was all headed for a tight 3rd set finish when the floodlights timed out at 10pm... to be continued!"  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Venelin Papazov (Sep 8) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Venelin has an unusual game which takes some to time to get used to and I nearly collapsed in the 2nd set. Happy to have pulled it off which gaves us time to play a friendly 3rd as well. "  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Tom Harvey (Sep 7) 7-5, 3-6, [10-6]

Player Comments:

  • "Sadly this one ended in a tiebreak as we ran out of time and won't be able to reconvene for a while, but it was the usual battle with Tom who was able to pressure me with a much improved second serve."  -- David
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Venelin Papazov (Sep 7) 3-6, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A warm welcome to the Kennington and Brockwell League for Venelin. This was a fierce, competitive battle played out over 3 gruelling sets. Venelin started well as he found great range on his strong serve making it incredibly hard for me to break. After losing the first set 6-3 I managed to build some momentum in set 2 by taking an early lead only to be pegged back to 4 all as Venelin's incredible retrieving kept me often wondering how I could ever get the ball past him. Having looked comfortable on serve all set, a rare loose service game at 4-5 allowed me to take the set. The final set was nip and tuck until 2 all, after which, I managed to win the last 4 games to take it 6-2. A great match and I look forward to the next one. "  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet and play Thomas for the first time plus the rain held off on a very autumnal night in Kennington. Thomas has not played much recently and this was only his 2nd game of the round. That was the main difference last night, he has lots of ability, good ground strokes and serve. We had some really fun rallies and some long intense games. Having played 7 times in the past 3/4 weeks, I had enough rhythm to get through the tighter games. Look forward to our next game! "  -- Marcos

Thomas struggled throughout with his serve, gifting me many points through double faults. We had some long fun rallies though. I was very relieved to get my first win back from injury. Conditions were tough though, we had rain and then a floodlight failure, we changed courts half way, it was very gusty too. Glad to get through it all! Look forward to our next game!"  -- Marcos

Player Comments:

  • "Well, well, well, if it isn't our old friend winter? The chill of 2019-20 graced Kennington Park this evening and was about as welcome as a stubbed toe. This didn't stop the hordes of fans flocking to South London to take in some Monday night tennis though. They came in their thousands to see these two play on pristine, dry courts - a sight recently as rare as how the French like their steak! Remi was serving up a storm - no really his kick serve not so much 'kicking' up at you, rather being shot out of a mortar cannon - add this to his forehand which puts more revolutions on the ball than Central America has undergone and the crowd were whipped into a frenzy that the Tasmanian Devil would have been proud of. Well played all!"  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "They say even the tax-person has a day off occasionally - and so it proved as the relentless October rain decided to pack it in for a couple of hours to let these two play and entertain the South London massive who had come to support. And play they certainly did. In fact there was one point where there was an intrusion from a football and a netball at the same time allowing the players to show their multi-faceted many-dimensional talents all at once! The crowd were treated to some phenomenal entertainment the likes of which may only be repeated next year at Glastonbury when Elton John and Taylor Swift bring down the Pyramid Stage with a banging duet of Rocket Man. Talking of rockets stay away from Roberto's forehand. Well played Honky Cat."  -- Edward
Nick Crowe bt Remi Shah (Oct 15) 6-1, 6-2
Reveal CommentEdward Hamill bt Harry Shepherd (Oct 12) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It's not often that the players of a local leagues tennis match walk onto court with dry ice spreading across the surface - although how much this was down to the organisers as opposed to the rowdy park dwellers letting off fireworks next to the courts is debatable. Either way it made for an exciting start to the match! This clearly had an effect on the servers as throughout the first set there were more breaks than when you try and watch a film on ITV (Lord of the Rings is long enough already). Despite this the crowd were treated to a fine display including some incredible net rushing. Indeed the race to the net between these two made the US - Russian space race from the Cold War look like the primary school sack race! Well played all."  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "Even the most casual of fans know it's been too long since an Abnett vs Hamill match in the KB tennis league. Did the match deliver? Oh yes, in an abundance. After all, it is the season of plenty. As farmers around the country gather their crops for harvest these two set about yielding forehands/backhands and volleys that sent the crowds delirious. Even the forecasted rain stayed away - Zeus - God of weather - had clearly been waiting for this one too - of course, he could have watched it on catchup - but we all know the live thing is where the cool cats are at. The purring from the crowds was audible as Luke's passing shots homed in on the sidelines as accurately as Professor John Curtice's soon to be required exit polls. Well played all."  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "This was the second time Andy and I played in the KB, and again this went the full distance with nothing between us in the first two sets. Re-convening for the third set produced slightly more tentative tennis, although Andy's court coverage was (as usual) phenomenal ... apparently his years playing a midfield position in football serves him well on the tennis court, as it is the equivalent distance to cover! Luckily for me, his first serve wasn't clicking in the final set, which allowed me the win. As ever, a thoroughly enjoyable match."  -- Christopher

  • "It was a peculiar start for the first 6 games as we kept breaking each other's serves (with almost no double faults). From then we were holding serve until 5-5 when I broke but Heather broke back and we had to go to a tiebreak. She is an amazing player who attacks and defends extremely well."  -- Benedict
