Collapse AllKennington & Brockwell Parks Singles - Round 53 | Thursday 13 February 2020 to Wednesday 8 April 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 11 March 2020)

We had all the elements of a really fine early-spring round, and even brought prematurely to an end, our winners and everyone who took park can be be proud of their achievements. Keep up the living-room bunny jumps and can't wait to see you all back on court!

Group Summary:

There was a lot more tennis left to play in this group before the early bath and several players could still have powered on through to win the group. But good scheduling maximised Brian's on-court efforts, his bonus points taking him a point clear of Tom when the curtain fell. So though Tom edged a win against Brian, it is Brian who takes gold this time! Some lovely tennis played and the group had the makings of something special so hope we can all get back on court again soon!

Player Comments:

  • "Despite the windy conditions, lots of good tennis tennis and rallies in this match. I served for the match at 5-4 in the second but Tom rallied back to take the next 3 games and win the set, he carried that momentum into the final set and is serving at 4-2 up so hopefully we will get to complete it soon."  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Luke Abnett (Mar 11) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Having played Luke many times & lost our previous match together I knew I had start well & be more aggressive. That worked for the first set and I closed it out comfortably enough 6-2. Luke started to play much better with more consistently & intent in the second set and raced into a 5-2 lead. I dug deep to win the next 3 games to level the match but Luke again took 6-5 lead, i managed to break him once to force a TB in which i raced 4 nil up eventually winning 7-5 in a nervy finish. Sorry Luke about 3/4 let cords too in set 2...... was v lucky with those. Until next time!"  -- Marcos

Player Comments:

  • "Hopefully third time lucky and we’ll be able to complete the match! "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Luke Abnett (Mar 8) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Super close first set. I managed to go 5-2 up but Luke stormed back into it and had me on the ropes at 5-4 with a break point to level the set. I was fortunate to take it in the end and the second set score line was a little bizarre considering how close the match was. Look forward to playing again soon."  -- Tom
David Jovic bt Marcos Fernandez (Mar 7) 6-3, 6-3
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Simon Wood (Mar 2) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I knew Simon was a solid player after beating me last time out, and that I had to play well to get a result. Thankfully my game mostly clicked tonight and I was able to get the forehand functioning. I probably benefited from Simon's injury/sabbatical from the league for a couple of seasons too. I expect the next one to be much closer! Thanks for the game"  -- Brian
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Marcos Fernandez (Mar 1) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Finally, a game in the sunshine! Good to see Marcos back in division 1 and free from injury. Had a good battle, mostly going with serve, but a break in each set allowed me to snatch the victory."  -- Brian
Reveal CommentPaolo Giua bt Brian O'neill (Feb 27) 6-1, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "Rain interrupted play which allowed me to regroup and change my tactics after a mauling in the first set. New tactics paid some dividends but sadly not enough to take Paulo to a decider! Next time ;-) !!!"  -- Brian

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Brian O'neill (Feb 27) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Brian took the lead early in the first set and maintained the advantage through out. I managed to get on top in the second. Then the third became a bit of an attritional affair as the balls fell of a cliff. Lots of long points, long games and ultimately a long set. I was fortunate to come out on top but fun hitting as always."  -- Tom

Group Summary:

If the group win was simply to be based on quality of match commentaries, Edward would have walked this round. As it is, we suspect Julian would have been impossible to catch even if the round had played out as planned. Not that Julian wasn't made to work hard for the group win, just look at runner-up, Edward's terrific three set challenge. So much good tennis here - thanks for playing and can't wait to renew the challenges once more.

Reveal CommentEdward Hamill bt Nick Crowe (Mar 12) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "With the global sporting calendar grinding to a halt this fixture took on an even greater sense of importance. Of course the South London tennis faithful would attend in their thousands, but now millions of eyes from around the world tuned in to Kennington Park, court 4 to quench their sporting thirst. No pressure then! There was worry that the players may not rise to the occasion but fear not as they rose more beautifully than a Mary Berry Victoria Sponge. Tasty. The competition on show was marvellous with the drama in several games building to a crescendo that had the fans in raptures. In particular one game was so long that it’s been calculated you could have read most of Homer’s Iliad by the time Nick hit the final winner! Well played. "  -- Edward

Reveal CommentEdward Hamill bt Paul Ruenz (Feb 24) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What a weapon! That's just naughty. Can you teach me!? were just some of the cries that could be heard from the capacity crowd as they were treated to Paul's cross court forehand-come-slap for the first time this season. A very belated christmas treat for the tennis ultras of South London and Paul was certainly in a generous mood as his winners were raining down more frequently than we're having winter storms at the minute. Seriously, wind, have a day off! That's not his only trick - with his volleys at the net more delicate than a Fabargé egg treating the crowd to a masterclass that wouldn't have looked out of place at the Louvre itself! The crowd, having taken on this tutorial of tennis left ready for Spring to spring into action. "  -- Edward
Benjamin Rose bt Edward Hamill (Feb 14) 6-4, 6-2

Sophie, Sophie they have been chanting from the KB terraces as the newcomer put in one of those debut performances that really catches the eye. Deprived only of a clean sweep of matches by the early end to the round, she nevertheless won all her five matches and earned her bonus points.
