Another bumper round in Ladywell Fields as we welcomed 15 new players to the league and had 9 busy groups! Well done for getting your matches played in some inclement weather conditions and in fact just over three quarters of all possible matches were played which is a great effort. Lucky we got this round completed before lockdown and we look forward to getting going again soon!

Group Summary:

This was a well contested group with the majority of matches played and midway bonus points earned... and congratulations to Joe for a successful defence of his crown! Joe's 7 wins meant he finished the round undefeated and was 2 points clear of runner up Julian Leichtmann. There were several close 3 setters in this group including the 'battle of the Julians' won by Julian Leichtmann and Joe's win against Michael with an epic second set tiebreak!

Player Comments:

  • "Lady luck was definitely on my side in this match. Julian was definitely the better player in the 1st and should have won it 6-3. The sun was coming and going all match and unfortunately for Julian it was in his face at the beginning of the tiebreak. I was further helped by a net cord that trickled over to go 4-0 up. The 2nd set was closer with me getting an early lead before Julian fighting back. I had a chance to serve it out but didn't manage but managed to break to win. Was an enjoyable match with some good rallies. Look forward to playing again post lockdown, hopefully with less scrambling on my part. "  -- Michael

  • "Annoying on numerous levels: it rained and then cleared up on the way back, I didn't take some match points in the second set, Hugh didn't get a chance to take the second set and was serving at 6-5. My strings broke on my favorite racquet. it wasn't supposed to rain after 4pm! no chance to complete the match. Apart from that it was a good match played in the best spirit! "  -- Julian

  • "Joe started slow but he then took the second set easily through huge serves and big f hands. third set was epic. I broke early and saved over 10 break points to get to 30-30 5-3 up. I had an easy volley for a match point but missed it as I must have been thinking about a pint in the club house. Before you know if i'm serving to stay in the match at 5-6. Breaker Gods were shining on me as I had a net chord go my way and Joe just missed a slice that would have been a clean winner, so instead of being 4-2 down at changeover I was up by this score. Just about managed to creep over the line here but Joe played the more aggressive and positive tennis and deserved to have the win not me "  -- Julian

Player Comments:

  • "We managed to play our game an hour earlier than planned to avoid the coming rain, which worked out pretty well. Joe and I have played at least a couple of times before, with honours roughly even I think. Today there were probably a couple of pivotal moments in each set that could have led to a closer score, but overall, I guess I won this one due to a greater level of consistency and too many unforced errors from Joe. As always though, this was a fun match, featuring some great topspin forehands from Joe and some brilliant topsy-turvy rallies. "  -- Raf

Reveal CommentRaf O'Reilly bt Stephen Bilbe (Sep 22) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "First time playing Stephen. We played at his club under floodlights, which was fun. When Stephen sped off to a 2-0 lead, playing excellently I might add, I feared the worst. I fought for everything, and thankfully for me some unforced errors crept into his game. I still have no idea how I won the first set 6-2, when so many of the points were so close and hotly contested. Stephen again raced to a 2-0 lead in set 2. I fought back hard taking it to 4-2 to me, with a great chance for 5-2. However, Stephen fought back brilliantly to take it to 5-4 to him, and then 6-5, before I brought it to a TB. He started well but I managed to recover to 5-5, before I limped over the line. This was an extremely tough and physical contest."  -- Raf

Reveal CommentRaf O'Reilly bt Paul Rubinstein (Sep 15) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was our third meeting, with it 1-1 up to today. That said, Paul had almost total control of our last match, and on the back of a difficult match against Carsten yesterday, I must admit that I was fearing the worst to some extent. Thankfully, I was much more prepared for today's match than yesterday's, and I had a clear gameplan based on my shortcomings in our last match. Overall, I guess I won because I was more consistent and Paul seemed to hold back on his shots a little. That said, it was tighter than the score suggests, in the second set at least, and when Paul came back from 4-1 down to 4-3, there were a couple of points that could really have changed the course of the match. This was a fun match in the very hot sun (on one side)."  -- Raf
