Player Comments:
- "We started the match despite really heavy rain. I managed to win a few close games with multiple deuces at the beginning of the 1st set and managed to stay on top. Luckily, the rain stopped/ got lesser. In the 2nd set, I was already 3:4 down and Peter played with more consistency, passing me quite a few times at the net. I managed to find my game again and brought the set home. Could have easily ended much closer. Thanks for the great match mate." -- Julian
Player Comments:
- "Joe started off very well and got a 5:1 lead in the 1st set very quickly. He'd hardly missed a point. I managed to get into the match by the end of the set and we played a close 2nd set. I managed to win 3 games in a row and secured this set. The tie break was bizarre, I was 2:8 behind and even at 5:9 it seemed unlikely to come back but I somehow managed to do so. A good and competitive match, very windy conditions and rain, 2 different surfaces... Thanks for the match Joe." -- Julian
Player Comments:
- "Peter started very well giving me nothing in the first set and I just couldn't get into it. I tried to hit bigger but just gave away free points. Second set he broke in the first game but I found my f hand consistency and attacked the second serve to race to 5-1. I got nervy and just about managed to get over the line for 6-3. Set 3 I broke and held for 2-0 but Peter then managed a good hold. First or second point at 2-1 with me serving Peter pulled up. He tried another couple of points but he was definitely struggling to move now and he had to call it a day. Shame as just about getting to real crunch point of the match. I hope it's nothing too serious and we play a full match soon. " -- Julian
Player Comments:
- "Good match, 1 amazing point when Peter sprinted all over the place from dropshot to lob to finish with a great passing shot. Close in the end, was lucky to hit some lines" -- Carsten
Player Comments:
- "Tight match and in each set I was up, 3.0 in the first and 5-1 in the second but Carsten refused to give up and won a couple of games from being 40-0 down and also 15-40 on his serve. I was definitely cagey at the end and saved b point at 5-3 and if it had gone to 5-4 with Carsten serving we might still be playing. Good to meet another player for the first time who played with good sportsmanship. " -- Julian
Match of the Group:
Reveal CommentJulian Langley bt Joe Clarke (Apr 24) 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3Player Comments:
- "Joe started slow and I had a point for a 5-1 lead but he came back to 5-5 and I just managed to get over the line. Second set I came back from 3-5 to serve for it at 6-5 but was broken to 30. Joe then played a tidy breaker to take it. Third set Joe broke in first game and nearly held for 2-0 and probably the match but I broke back and won the next four games as he dipped in form. At 5-1 to me Joe picked it up again and easily took the next two games. Luckily I focused and served out the match at the third attempt for 6-3. Tight match with many swings of momentum played on three different courts at the same club. Relief for me to finally beat Joe who has consistently been the top player in recent rounds...... - "This was a very tough match! Thankfully I was fast out of the blocks and won the first set while Hugh was finding his range. In the second set, he has definitely found it, and won convincingly with some super play. I was suffering physically - some of the points were long and this match probably featured the longest point I have ever been involved in - and was fearing the worst going into the final set...I somehow managed to regain my composure and ran off to a 3-0 lead. Hugh then turned the screw again and came back to 3-2. The next game was probably the decider, and thankfully for me I managed to hang in there for dear life and take it. A lovely evening for tennis and a great match played in the right spirit. Thanks so much Hugh." -- Raf
Player Comments:
- "Lovely sunny conditions. Matches with Stefano have tended to be tough affairs and this one was no different. The first set was very convincing by Stefano. The second set saw unforced errors creep in to Stef's game. Stef raced off to a 2-0 lead in the final set before some unforced errors crept in allowing me to take the next 5 games. The tide seemed to be turning in Stef's favour in the next game, but then our time ran out...to be continued. 5-2 to me. 30-40 on my serve." -- Raf
Player Comments:
- "A beautiful, slightly dreamlike summer evening on court 2 in Sydenham Wells Park. The first two sets went by in a flash before the match ground to a halt in the first few games of the decider, with three very long, gruelling deuce games. The rest of the third set was tight but unlike many other matches in this round I managed to stay relaxed and swing freely, which helped me past the finishing line. It's definitely the best I have played this round and nice to finish on a high note! Thanks Hugh for the match. " -- Paul
Player Comments:
- "Nice evening for a game. Paul and I had some decent rallies with a few nice groundstrokes and winners from the net. Enjoyed the match. " -- Adam

Player Comments:
- "It was much closer than the score suggests. Adam is a great player with a super touch. Thanks for the game!" -- Stefano
Player Comments:
- "A great match in lovely conditions, the score does not reflect how tough a match this was. This featured some incredible rallies, loads of deuce games, and a fair amount of luck on my part. I basically hung in there for dear life for much of the time and thankfully Paul made a few uncharacteristic errors when in a dominant position on key points. After a similarly demanding match yesterday, I am now absolutely broken physically! Paul, I look forward to our next match." -- Raf
Player Comments:
- "Enjoyable close match in great conditions. Lots of games went to deuce. Had some cracking points where we used all the court. Raf showed excellent consistency throughout. Fortune was on my side and I managed to clinch it in the 2nd set with some solid forehands. " -- Adam
Player Comments:
- "Always a tough battle with Paul. First set was scrappy and affected by sideway winds. Better striking in the second set. Thanks Paul " -- Stefano
Player Comments:
- "A well fought match on a beautiful sunny day. Raf's consistency won through comfortably in the first, but then I found the right balance of consistency and aggression in the subsequent sets. Thanks Raf!" -- Gavin
Player Comments:
- "Close! A quite scrappy affair with some real moments of quality. I especially enjoyed(ish) Gavin's Del Potro-esque forehand winners down the line and my own crosscourt backhands that somehow always found the lines. Thanks Gavin for the match!" -- Paul
Player Comments:
- "Scrappy first set. In the second and third sets the quality of striking went up a notch. Good game. Thanks Hugh" -- Stefano

- "A great Friday afternoon escape from work. Bright cloudy day that felt hotter as the match went on. A very close game all the way with each member finding turns to find consistent form. Some absolutely fantastic points/rallies. Given a 2 hour booking the tie break selected to get to a win which I have to admit was a gift as fitness may well have been a factor if a full 3rd set was played. Overall a truly enjoyable match and as the tie break score indicated could have gone either way. Thanks again. Mike" -- Michael
Player Comments:
- "A close match in welcome warm sunshine. Both players improved through the first set which ended with a crucial break late in the set. Attack and counter-attack and some excellent net play by James drew the match even closer in the second set which largely went on serve. Late on Roger broke to serve for the set but James saved 4 match points and broke back. The tiebreak went in Roger's favour." -- Roger

Player Comments:
- "This match was cursed from the get go. After I broke a string in the third game, Asad had to charm a stranger into lending me a racket. Two games later and Asad broke a string- even he couldn't source another racket out of thin air. Before we could complete our match the following Tuesday, Asad's physio advised him - or rather, had to force him - to rest his ankle to avoid further damage. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Asad, as our match felt like it was going to be a thriller." -- Oliver
Player Comments:
- "This one was a fast-paced match, featuring flat forehand winners from Patrick, an ace from me and a drop volley for each of us. In the middle of the second set there were multiple deuce games on both our serves, and all was hung in the balance. Great game, some really excellent rallies and for sure a real cardio workout. Thanks Patrick. " -- Oliver
