Collapse AllLeamington and Warwick Singles - Round 18 | Thursday 20 February 2020 to Wednesday 15 April 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 18 March 2020)

The curtain had to come down on this round after only 5 weeks so well done to everyone for playing as many matches as they did. Hopefully the league will come back bigger and stronger with everyone raring to go!

Group Summary:

Sometimes one player in a group makes all the running and they almost invariably win the group. So it was here. There were just 3 matches played, all involving Martin, and he won them all. He even got his bonus points and moves from runner up last time to group champ this time. Well played.

Player Comments:

  • "Competitive first set. No so much in the second. Great fun though. And (getting) warm!"  -- Martin
Reveal CommentMartin Durrant bt Harpal Singh (Mar 6) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Fortunately for me, Harpal started slowly and the first set was reasonably comfortable. Different story in the second set which was very closely contested and only a couple of decisive points made the difference. Fully expected a 3rd set and a late night!"  -- Martin

Match of the Group:

Player Comments:

  • "The fourth match in our series and it is now 2 games all. this was the first time that the match has been settled in straight sets but it was still nip-and-tuck all the way. It's always a pleasure playing Tom - win or lose."  -- Martin

Group Summary:

As this was a small group to start with, a high percentage of possible matches were played, and well done to Martin G who played all of them! Thanks for the great match commentaries and congratulations to Martin Q who tops the group. He tied on points with Darin but lost fewer sets per matches played, so takes gold this time!

Player Comments:

  • "Another great game with Martin G. this morning at Warwick Tennis Club. The weather was kind to us, no rain and only a few mild gusts, which probably played into my hands more than Martin G. today. I had a good run of service games and managed to break Martin G. at crucial points, though Martin G. pulled off some wonderful cross-court returns which kept me honest and pushing hard to the end. Just my day today. Many thanks again to Martin G. for a wonderful morning of tennis."  -- Martin

Player Comments:

  • "A windy afternoon for some tennis but it is always nice to meet Martin, a true tennis gentleman. The score does not show how better Martin is compared to the last time we played. Great cross forehands and backhands, especially on big serves. Double faults helped me quite a lot."  -- Luca

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMartin Quadroy bt Luca Martinengo (Feb 23) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Many thanks to Luca for a great game over the weekend. The match was a hard fought tussle and could have gone either way. With the weather the way it was, we opted to play on an all-weather court later in the day, and we did our best battling the wind gusts and glare. Both of us went through periods of double-faulting and not being able to see the ball, but it didn’t stop us giving our best and going for our shots when we could. The first set was a real topsy-turvy affair with the lead changing several times. The second was very much like the first, with perhaps the only difference being that I managed to hold serve for consecutive games towards the later part of the set. Thanks again to Luca for a great game and on to next one."  -- Martin
