Collapse AllLeamington & Warwick Singles - Round 19 | Thursday 9 July 2020 to Wednesday 2 September 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 5 August 2020)

It was great to see friendly, competitive tennis return to the courts of Leamington & Warwick Tennis League and for the round to run to completion again this time! We welcomed 5 new players to the league alongside regulars and returners and collectively over two thirds of all possible matches were played which is a great effort. There were lots of close and exciting scorelines across both groups too so we're already looking forward to the next round!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Leagues debutants Nav and James for grabbing the top 2 spots, with Nav's run of 7 unbeaten matches taking him 3 points clear of runner up James. Nav's standout match was an incredibly close 3 setter against Martin with each set going to a tiebreak and in which "Martin lived up to his reputation of returning everything I threw at him"! Not to be outdone, James and Tom's match also went to a third set tiebreak in a match that "really tested the concentration and temperament" while David and Harpal were locked in a 3 set battle too. What a group!

Final Rankings:

  1. Nav Aulkh [W7] 16 includes 2 bonus points WINNER

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure meeting James. A super athlete and great player. It was a super tight match specially the first set (over 1 hour long!) - I was lucky to win the tie breaker. The second set was closer than it looks. I really hope to play James again!"  -- David
Reveal CommentJames Fortey bt Martin Quadroy (Aug 31) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was my third match on the new VP courts and I’m starting to get used to the way they play - slow with a high bounce. It was Martin’s first time and I don’t think he will mind me saying, he’s not a fan. We had perfect weather and were expecting a good battle but Martin couldn’t find his game on the new surface. The scoreline is in no way a reflection of our relative skills and I look forward to playing Martin in the future in Leam. Sorry the afternoon wasn’t that enjoyable but thank you for the match."  -- James
Reveal CommentJames Fortey bt Harpal Singh (Aug 26) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "First opportunity to play on the new VP courts and under floodlights to boot. The court plays quite slow so we had some very long rallies with the focus on % tennis over winners. It’s cooled down a bit recently but we definitely needed the rest between games. The pattern of both sets was similar, I managed to get away, Harpal pulled it back and then I managed to break at the end. It certainly felt closer than the scoreline suggests. We had the lights so had a knock after and both let fly, it’s amazing what you can do without the match pressure. Well played."  -- James
Reveal CommentDavid Morey bt Tom Courtenay-Evans (Aug 21) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure meeting Tom - a great player with a fabulous forehand and volleys.. It was a super tight match. I started well breaking in the first game but then lost momentum and Tom took control of the rest of the set. 2nd and 3rd were much closer with a lot of breaks and in the end it came to details. "  -- David
Reveal CommentBen Davis bt Martin Durrant (Aug 20) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Martin. Two very hard fought sets with long rallies. He rarely missed from the back of the court and in the end I had to really go for my shots to try and shorten the rallies! Great contest, thanks for the game Martin."  -- Ben
Reveal CommentMartin Quadroy bt Tom Courtenay-Evans (Aug 20) 3-6, 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another great match but certainly a tale of two evenings. I had no right to get through the first evening where Tom was playing some great tennis. His forehand was on fire and the match should have been over then and there. I still don’t know how I managed to survive. The second evening on the other hand seemed to go my way, along with the score line. Just my night I guess. Many thanks to Tom for a wonderful match over two lovely evenings."  -- Martin
Reveal CommentDavid Morey bt Gabor Kovacs (Aug 18) 3-6, 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure meeting Gabor. A really nice guy who plays with a beautiful technique. The first set I started well but soon Gabor starting putting pressure on my serve and never looked back. In the second my serving was better and tried to be more aggressive which worked. unfortunately at the start of the 3rd Gabor injured his groin but trooped on to finish the match - what a gentleman. I look forward to playing Gabor again fully fit"  -- David
Reveal CommentMartin Durrant bt Harpal Singh (Aug 16) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This didn't feel like a 1 & 0 match! Plenty of deuces and break points but my error count was just less than Harpal's. Very hot and humid and once again goof fun to play Harpal."  -- Martin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt Martin Durrant (Aug 15) 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-0)

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Martin. Overall the 3 tie break sets took us over 3 hours to finish over 2 sessions. Martin lived up to his reputation of returning everything I threw at him. It was played on artificial grass, were the lower bounce played havoc with my topspin backhand so resorted to my slice. Martin's slices and lob shots where the highlight of the match. Many games went to break points on either side and on another day Martin would be writing this commentary. Really looking forward to our next battle. I may bring an oxygen tank with me next time :)"  -- Nav
Reveal CommentJames Fortey bt Tom Courtenay-Evans (Aug 14) 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Expected a close game with Tom and that is exactly how it played out. The scoring patterns were less expected however. Each of us kept having runs so games would be won and lost to love or one would go 40-0 up only for the opposing player to come back and take the game. A match that really tested the concentration and temperament. I guess I just managed to reset better in the final tie-break. Looking forward to our next match."  -- James
Reveal CommentMartin Quadroy bt Martin Durrant (Aug 13) 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Many thanks to Martin D. for a great match. Lovely venue, lovely evening (two of them in the end) and a well-deserved beer to finish it off. As the score line shows, every set was very close and could have easily gone either way. Martin’s reputation for getting everything back and never giving up was clearly evident, and if luck had gone more his way, he’d probably be writing this commentary instead of me. Looking forward to our next match. "  -- Martin
Reveal CommentDavid Morey bt Harpal Singh (Aug 11) 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Super long tight match and very sweaty! A pleasure meeting and playing Harpal"  -- David
Reveal CommentGabor Kovacs bt Tom Courtenay-Evans (Aug 11) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It's always very enjoyable and challenging to play Tom. He has broken early in both sets, but I've managed to fight my way back. Lot of close games, a couple of inches here and there and the score line could have been very different. Looking forward to our next match!"  -- Gabor
Reveal CommentMartin Durrant bt Gabor Kovacs (Aug 9) 2-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "2 hours of very competitive tennis on one of the hottest days of the year! Clearly, Gabor got off to a flyer and he convincingly beat me in the first. Likewise I took the early initiative in the second. The third however was a real dual-in-the-sun. I was 4-1 up but Gabor pulled me back to 5-4. After a couple of saved match points I finally one with an ace. Great game against a really good opponent."  -- Martin
Reveal CommentGabor Kovacs bt Martin Quadroy (Aug 7) 4-6, 6-2, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match with Martin tonight. As it's often the case in this league, both sides had some great winners, but ultimately it was the unforced errors deciding the match. Martin has created most of the chances, but he let me off the hook a few too many times."  -- Gabor
Reveal CommentHarpal Singh bt Martin Quadroy (Aug 4) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "I started well breaking in the first game and hang on for 1st set. Windy conditions didn't help either of us. 2nd set was a different story with multiple break throughout. Martin was up 5-3 but I managed to hang on and close it out 7-5."  -- Harpal
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt David Morey (Jul 28) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable match. The first set David was finding his feet with the VP court bounce. The second set he came out fighting sticking to his game plan of attaching my backhand with the added confidence of finding his range. He broke early with a 3-2 lead in the second set. His backhand is a work of art and he played many winners from that side of the court. I had to raise my game to see the second set through by pulling the trigger first. The score line didn't tell the whole story as many games went to deuce. Well played David. You play tennis the way it should be played! Looking forward to our next battle."  -- Nav
Reveal CommentGabor Kovacs bt Harpal Singh (Jul 28) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A match of two halves. We started a few days earlier but we had to stop when Harpal's glasses broke halfway through the second set. In the first half we were both playing well, but today neither of us managed to find our rhythm. At the end Harpal made a few more unforced errors than me, which has handed me the win."  -- Gabor
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt James Fortey (Jul 22) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A thoroughly enjoyable battle by two big hitters. I started the set slow and James sizzled many great first serves and second serves that many would be happy to call their first serves. His backhand drive and backhand lob shots where the highlights of the whole match. Before I knew it I was 5-1 down. I was in for a long evening of tennis. I found my range in the back end of the first set and lost 3-6. Second set I came out fighting knowing I had found my range and needing to be more aggressive I saw it out at 6-3. The last set I was up 5-1 following my developed playbook. The next two games James ripped up his playbook and ripped some awesome forehands hitting the baseline, pushing me back and finishing with some great volleys. I held on ;)"  -- Nav
Reveal CommentMartin Quadroy bt David Morey (Jul 22) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Many thanks to David for a great match on a lovely evening in Leamington. While the score went my way, David played very well. I'm certain that if more good fortune had gone his way (and not mine), the score could have been vastly different. "  -- Martin
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt Tom Courtenay-Evans (Jul 21) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. In the first set I broke early and Tom was playing catch up for most of it. A lot of the games went to deuce but I managed to get them over the line and win. Tom played more aggressively in the second half of the set with some scintillating backhand slices pinning me back to the baseline. The pressure was on, as I knew if anyone can come back from a deficit, it's Tom. Luckily I kept my concentration and got over the line again feeling fortunate that Tom didn't start the match as he ended it. Well played Tom it's always a pleasure to hit with you and look forward to our next battle."  -- Nav
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt Harpal Singh (Jul 19) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match. The first set my playbook delivered. I relaxed slightly at the start of the 2nd Set and Harpal took advantage and raised his game. He played some great backhand slices and served better to really push the 2nd set all the way."  -- Nav
Reveal CommentJames Fortey bt Martin Durrant (Jul 19) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable, closely fought match. Martin did warn me about his 3 set history and this didn’t disappoint. Some long rallies with a lot of lateral movement, especially towards the end. It was my first game at the boat club, hopefully it won’t be my last."  -- James
Reveal CommentMartin Durrant bt Tom Courtenay-Evans (Jul 17) 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "This was the 7th time I have played Tom. Every match seems to go to three sets and the third set seems to last forever. There was nothing between us on this occasion with Tom have a couple of match points at 5-4 and again at 6-5. Great match, great fun. I need a rest."  -- Martin
Reveal CommentMartin Durrant bt David Morey (Jul 15) 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8)

Player Comments:

  • "Very keenly fought match with lots of long rallies. David seemed to get to the ball no matter where or how hard I hit it. I look forward to playing him again"  -- Martin
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt Gabor Kovacs (Jul 14) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good battle against Gabor. He broke me early in the first set but I managed a quick break back and then carried the momentum forward in the rest of the set. The second set Gabor came out fighting but made a afew net errors once he was in a good court position. Thoroughly enjoyable, well played Gabor. "  -- Nav
Reveal CommentTom Courtenay-Evans bt Harpal Singh (Jul 14) 5-7, 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A hard fought three setter with Harpal at VP. We started on Tuesday evening and after two hours of fluctuating fortunes bad light stopped play with the match poised at one set all. Harpal had won six games in a row to go from 3-5 down in the 1st to 7-5, 3-0 in the 2nd before I managed to fight back. When we resumed on Saturday evening the first two games went to several deuces each before I edged them and managed to see out the set. Always enjoyable to play Harpal and looking forward to the next one."  -- Tom
Reveal CommentJames Fortey bt Gabor Kovacs (Jul 12) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I managed to get an early break in both sets and hung on. Mainly a tale of unforced errors with Gabor making a few more than normal. A splattering of fizzing forehands and passing shots shared between us."  -- James
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt Martin Quadroy (Jul 12) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was a good battle against Martin. He played the serve and volley game really well. In the end I think it took its toll and his legs became a little heavy otherwise it could have gone all the way to three sets"  -- Nav
