It was another successful round in Lee Valley Tennis League with over 160 matches played and lots of bonus balls sent out in the post, so thanks to all of you for being proactive in arranging your matches. The commentaries revealed somewhat variable weather conditions so you did well to persevere and let's hope for finer conditions in the Spring leagues!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to group winner Phil on a strong performance, recording 6 match wins and finishing 4 points clear of runner up David. Kudos to David though for winning their head to head in straight sets, but with 2 more matches played it wasn't enough to peg Phil back. Juan Martin Naborati was unlucky to lose 2 tough 3 setters against Allan and Bertie, which Bertie described as "an exhausting 3 hours of running around". Well played everyone!

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAllan Kent-Lemon bt Juan Martin Naborati Del Japa (Nov 19) 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Absolute marathon match. In all three sets I was up a break and serving for the for the set but Juan Martin pulled it back every time.. twice from two breaks down.. getting a win from the tie-break in the second set. Great mental strength. The court remained greasy throughout making it difficult to defend so if you went through a bad spell it was difficult to stay in the point resulting in some pretty wild swings of momentum. Cracking match - looking forward to next time!"  -- Allan

Player Comments:

  • "Good match against Bertie, conditions were a bit slippery which suited me more. Bertie's forehand is dangerous so had to play aggressive, and it was pleasing to find consistency today as well. Looking forward to playing next time. "  -- David
Phil Zana bt Bertie Stephens (Oct 14) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentBertie Stephens bt Juan Martin Naborati Del Japa (Oct 11) 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A terrific match so early in the season. Juan raced to an early 5-1 lead in the 1st, before Bertie pulled it back, only to be broken at 6-5 and lose. The second set saw nobody give up anything, until the tie-break where a few lucky shots had Bertie pull through. 2 hours in and both players minds focussed towards the 3rd, nothing would separate the players, it could have gone either way. An exhausting 3 hours of running around!"  -- Bertie
Phil Zana bt Patrick Killing (Oct 8) 6-2, 6-2
Reveal CommentPatrick Killing bt Juan Martin Naborati Del Japa (Oct 7) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "One of those where the score line doesn’t reflect some of the long games and great rallies, was a real pleasure!"  -- Patrick
Reveal CommentPatrick Killing bt Bertie Stephens (Oct 4) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A cracking match of mental resilience from the player who was behind in both sets. Stephens led 4-2 in Set 1, only for Killing to master a perfect turnaround, and then in identical fashion, Killing led the second 4-2 and on serve, only for Stephens to fight back to a 6-4 win. Time ended at 3-2 in the 3rd... both players may be hoping not to be 4-2 up at any point, or maybe the come-back spell is over?"  -- Bertie
  • "Another epic between the 8 am legends," -- Patrick

Group Summary:

It was very tight at the top of Group 2 with Phil just edging ahead of runner up Emma by one point although both recorded 4 match wins. This was a great league debut for Emma who showed her fighting spirit in two 3 set matches against Marcus and James, both of which were decided by championship tiebreaks in the third set. There were also 3 set wins for Marcus, James and Nick showing it was a very competitive group.
