Collapse AllLee Valley Singles - Round 17 | Thursday 7 June 2018 to Wednesday 29 August 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 4 July 2018)
A successful summer round for the Lee Valley league, with a good number of matches played and many close run races for the top spots. Thanks for taking part and persevering through the centre closure for the Hockey World Cup. Here's to more of the same next time!
Group Summary:
Patrick played every match and bagged his bonus points to leave nothing to chance in his quest for the title. This positive attitude paid off as he secured four victories to move to the front of the pack. Former champ Phil matched Patrick's wins tally and scheduled well too, to once again put his name in the hat for the prize. However the extra match Patrick played proved decisive as he picked up an extra point in his epic defeat to David to edge into the lead. Well played all.

- "An intense match in intense heat. One of the longest sets of tennis I’ve ever played ended with a cagey tiebreak with both players tentivley avoiding errors that could have ended either way. Any loser from that tiebreak would have been demoralised which may have led to the score in the second set. " -- James

There were many three set thrillers on the scoreboard in group two with Joe and Mathieu''s "3+hours" 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 contest perhaps the pick of the bunch. Martyn's rise up the ranks continues, as he finishes with four wins and bonus points under his belt to clinch his second group win in a row. Credit to Zafar who takes the satisfaction of having defeated the new champ in another marathon match. Well done to Daniel too who sneaks in front of Mathieu and Jack to claim the runner up spot.

George and Omer finished with the same win/loss record at the top of the table to make it a close call for the group crown. There was little to choose between the two players on the court either, with George just pipping Omer to the first set tiebreak in their unfinished head to head to narrowly become the new champ. Kudos to Nick and Cameron who also played five matches and take home a bonus prize.

- "What a tussle again - second time I have played Nick and again it was extremely tough! Nick pushed long then short with his good slices and just kept running and running and getting the ball back. I somehow took each set but it was not a straightforward affair! Nick is a true gentleman not just with his play but with his fair play and polite nature, thanks a lot I’m sure we will meet again Nick, best, Omer " -- Omer
Player Comments:
- "A tale of two sets on a muggy evening at Stratford Park. Both players started tentatively but Brooks was soon troubling Mayes with some gorgeous, Federer-esque topspin backhands down the line. Mayes faced two set points on his serve but found his form and clawed it back with a couple of cross-court winners to get the better of the tiebreak. As for the second set... well, we've all been there. Nick left feeling he'd had a lucky escape – with just a bit more aggression and risk-taking Cameron would've had the first, then the second would've looked very different. A young contender to keep an eye on." -- Nick
Player Comments:
- "What a epic game, Tim played really well, and pushed me hard, the game much tighter than the score suggests, Tim has a sold and varied game. Tim your a great guy. Thanks for a great game! " -- Omer
Player Comments:
- "A very entertaining match in, for once, perfect conditions at Lee Valley. Mindful of their gruelling three-set thriller last time, both players started cagily but found some form towards the business end of the first set. Tim's bodyline serving had Nick playing rope-a-dope for much of the second, but the Glaswegian just edged it for consistency in the end. An intriguing rivalry continues..." -- Nick

Arthur came through some hard fought encounters to finish with a trio of wins to his name, and with scheduling prowess part of his game too he clinches the runner up spot.

Sida was given a tough test by several of his opponents in this round, but he dug deep to win five out of six matches and earned bonus points too to he pull clear in first place. Richard made sure Sida didn't finish with an unbeaten record, emerging victorious from their tightly contested head to head 6-4 6-4. Ryan played every match and with half of these going the distance he certainly got some practice in. Unfortunately Ryan missed out on a three setter victory, however the points he gained for winning sets in these matches added to his three wins see hims pip Richard to the runners up post.
