Collapse AllLee Valley Singles - Round 26 | Thursday 8 October 2020 to Wednesday 4 November 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 4 November 2020)

Such a shame we had to end the round two weeks early due to lockdown but not before a good number of matches were played across the groups! A great effort from everyone and we look forward to getting going again soon!

Group Summary:

Roles were reversed at the top of Group 1 as Phil finished a single point clear of defending champ Ivan to take the title by the narrowest of margins. Both players won 3 matches but Phil also picked up a point from his 3 set defeat to Ivan, a match that "could have easily gone in either direction" with both players failing to convert match points in the final set before the "final twist" went Ivan's way!

Player Comments:

  • "Played over two days at Lea Valley. Indoors on the 20th October being a much more even battle which deserved to have more time to complete as we were both in the groove and even at one set each. The deciding set on the 31st October was spoiled by the wind which really affected both of us and skewed the score in what I believe would have been a really close and intriguing final set."  -- Winston

Player Comments:

  • "Great match and big battle as usual with Winston. Again he had most of the winners, while I had to try my best defensive game. The first set lasted about 80 minutes and could easily go either way. I had 4:2 lead and thought I have it, only to have Winston serving twice for the set minutes later. I was lucky to win the tiebreaker and that gave me edge for the second set. Looking forward to play again."  -- Ivan

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match, played in the wet courts of Stratford park, where we had to focused first on maintaining good balance on the slippery court. In the first set we were moving head to head with both winning more breaks than holds of serve. The second set David played more aggressively, which lead to more errors, while I maintained my conservative style. "  -- Ivan

I started a bit slow, with Trevor breaking my serve, but once I was able to settle in the match got more competitive. Trevor is rather consistent with his groundstrokes and fairly quick, so it wasn’t easy to beat him from the baseline. It was clear early on that to stay in the match I had to match his consistency, and I think a combination of that and aggressive returning of serve helped me just about edge it. I wish Trevor the best in the rest of his matches."  -- Ibrahim
