Reveal CommentJoseph Stack bt Aaron Darby (Dec 6) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A real game where both us us came out going for our shots - somehow I got a couple of wary games under my belt despite them going to deuces and kept the momentum up from there - second set I had to push harder as Aaron really got going, and managed to keep finding the line a little longer! We stayed onto play a third after we wrapped up and my luck had well and truly ran out ;) ! Always an enjoyable one mate - look forward to the next one"  -- Joseph

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMatthew Blaney bt Matthew Vickers (Dec 4) 6-1, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "The first set I cam out the blocks strong and got an early break. Lots of good rallies, however I held serve at vital moments before breaking again for 6-1. The second set was topsy-turvy with both of us been ahead in stages. 3-1 to Matt, before 5-4 to myself serving and being broken again. Getting to a tiebreak where I won 7-2. Overall and enjoyable match, good luck in your last two games Matt."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Matthew Vickers (Nov 24) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A fabulous match today on a chilly morning however Matt burst out the blocks to take the first set where I couldn’t hold serve at all and a net cord that changed the momentum of the set 😉. The aim was to just hold serve in the second but I was broken yet again in the first game but played on and getting back to form making less mistakes and every point was brutal rallies. Going in to the third was tight and again I was broken at the beginning but then held it together to get my first win against Matt at rothley. Really enjoyable and well played a great level too "  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentRussell Dabb bt Matthew Blaney (Nov 21) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Matt, good luck with the rest of your matches "  -- Russell
Reveal CommentMatthew Blaney bt Stephen Smith (Nov 19) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was played quite steadily on a slippy savanna surface. Only the one break at 3-2 to take this set. Second set I was 4-1 DB ahead before Stephen brought it back to 4-4. Unfortunately tiredness crept into his game as I broke again and held out to win 6-3 6-4. "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMatthew Blaney bt Aaron Darby (Nov 15) 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The 2nd time I've played Aaron. Both times have been long 3 set matches with plenty of quality tennis from both sets of players. In the first set I shot off to a 5-1 lead before Aaron stepped up his game to bring it back to 5-4 before I broke once again to win the set. Set 2: Aaron was in control right from the word go, breaking to make it 2-1, and breaking again to take the set 6-3. Set 3: Aaron started again strong going 3-1 up, before I eventually broke back to make it 3-3. With a couple of very long holds the game found its way to 4-4. My defence was too strong with lots of 10+ rallies with myself somehow coming out on top. I broke to go 5-4 ahead before holding my serve and winning another very enjoyable match against Aaron"  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentRussell Dabb bt Matthew Vickers (Nov 13) 6-3, 6-1

Reveal CommentEDWARD MORGAN bt Darryl Clarke (Jan 5) 6-4, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very chilly night in Enderby, but both Darryl and I were keen to play and I think we both were glad we did. It was a close game and we both had pros and cons to having not played much in a while. As always, we both had some great and not so great first served, but in the first set we had a game that lasted well over 20 minutes and was neck and neck for ages. Darryl pushed me all the way in the first but I managed to hold on. In the second, he turned the screw and was too good in all departments. In the 3rd, the score doesn't reflect how close the games were but I managed to get through. Well played buddy. Make sure you rejoin and let's have some friendlies too! 👍"  -- Edward

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentEDWARD MORGAN bt Lin Chen (Dec 12) 7-5, 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasure to meet and to play Chen this evening. I was expecting a really close match and it most certainly lived up to this. Chen and I were neck and neck throughout the first set, but at 5-5, I just managed to break Chen to go 6-5 and then I had a very fortunate service game including 2 aces to win 7-5 in the 1st set. However, Chen came out guns blazing in the second and I couldn't keep up with him. He kept holding serve and breaking me and cruised to a 6-2 victory to take the 2nd set. In the third, I tried to get my serve going again and we both dig deep meaning long games. I just about managed to get over the line to take the 3rd 6-2. Chen is technically much better than me & I really enjoyed the match. Thanks Chen!"  -- Edward
Reveal CommentEDWARD MORGAN bt Chris Glover (Dec 6) 7-6 (7-3), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "As always, this was a very close match between Chris and I. We play regularly socially, so we knew it would be very close. The first set was really topsy-turvy throughout, but I just managed to hold on and got to a tie break, and luckily for me, that went my way. The second set, Chris picked up a slight injury and it clearly hampered his mobility, although he was actually playing some great shots to counter that and so I was relieved to get across the line again and to see it out. I have no doubt that the next time we play, it will be a different story. Well played mate and I hope the injury isn't a long term issue 🙏 Good luck with the rest of your matches too 👍"  -- Edward
Reveal CommentDarryl Clarke bt Owain Ford (Dec 6) 3-6, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This match was both of our first match back for a while but both looked like we hadn’t been away having some long fast rallies both going for winners. Owain was to good for me first set and a lot of errors both sides but 2nd set I changed my game up and seemed to work well. Really enjoyed the match mate good luck in other matches "  -- Darryl
Reveal CommentEDWARD MORGAN bt Dan Mladenovic (Nov 23) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasure to meet and play Dan tonight. He is new to the League and returning to Tennis having not played in a while, but he very quickly settled into the match and we had lots of games that went to deuce, advantage, deuce. I managed to get an early lead in the first set, but it wasn't plain sailing by any stretch. In the second, again I took an early lead but Dan changed his game plan and from 1-5 down, got back to 4-5. Thankfully for me, I just about managed to get across the line. We played several sets afterwards and without the pressure of the match, we both started to play more freely. Great to meet you Dan and best of luck for the rest of your matches! I'm pretty certain once you get your eye in, the results will come!"  -- EDWARD

Reveal CommentSimon May bt Paul Morris (Dec 29) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Overall this was a very close match. In the first set it got to 4-4 with us both holding serve fairly comfortably to this point. Then Paul got the break to go 5-4 up. I broke back in the next one before holding and edging the last game. Each of these games was extremely close with lots of deuces. The second set started the same with very long games. It was on serve at 3-2 to me but felt like we'd already played a set with such long points. I managed to break in the next game which gave me the energy to push through and see out the match. Another very enjoyable game with Paul and I look forward tonplaying again. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentBen Evans bt Simon May (Dec 27) 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another close match with Simon. The first set saw Simon take a 5-1 lead, with me the clawing back to 5-5 and eventually taking the tie break. The second saw the intensity increase as Simon steamrolled ahead. The third set was the closest in terms of point-to-point as I managed to eventually get the double break and take the third set 6-3. Fantastic match Simon, I'll look forward to the next one!"  -- Ben
Reveal CommentBen Evans bt Tim Ettrick (Dec 22) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another epic against Tim. Although the first set may seem more flattering towards myself, at 5-2 up, Tim pulled out all stops and we ended up playing, without any exaggeration, 15+ deuces, before I managed to break serve. After a long last game in the first, lethargy crept in and the intensity of the game was much harder to keep up with. The second saw us at 4-4 with a break each, with the set looking to up in the air. I managed to hold serve, and after a hard-fought service game from Tim at 5-4, I managed to clinch the second set. Well played Tim, Looking forward to the next one! "  -- Ben
Reveal CommentBen Evans bt Tinashe Masara (Dec 21) 6-2, 6-0

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Paul Morris (Dec 11) 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Epic game in which Paul played to his strengths in the first set, leaving myself struggling. The 2nd set started to be more of a contest, perhaps with my different strategy that meaning I stayed matching Paul's shots and won some games. The tie break reflected the preceding games and could have gone either way. Although both of us were exhausted we went for a full third set, with so many long and well-contested rallies. I had match point when I was 6-4 up, but Paul held his nerve and pulled off some good winners , especially sharp diagnals at the net. So it went to a tie break. Fortunately I led early on 3-0, which gave me the buffer to ensure more long rallies which usually would go either way. Finally I led 6-3 and won the match point."  -- Tim

Reveal CommentSimon May bt Michael Buckley (Dec 6) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Lots of good rallies in the first set - the score doesn't tell the whole story. A tough battle in the second set with plenty of long rallies and Michael produced some excellent shots at the net on the run. Thanks for the match and good luck with the rest of yours."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Michal Nerc (Dec 6) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It was a lot closer than the scoreline suggested. We were evenly matched in the first set with Michael doing some amazing returns and drop shots. Once I got the hang of some of the drop shots I managed to get the break of serve and pull ahead. Michael came out strongly in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead. With the slippery surface playing an extra part we had to watch ourselves. Another spurt of energy brought me back to 4-4 and the a vital break of serve gave me the opportunity to serve out the match. Great fun inspite of the conditions. Thanks Michael !"  -- Tim
Reveal CommentSimon May bt Tim Ettrick (Dec 4) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was another close battle between us. The first set got to 3-3 with us both holding serve. I then managed to break Tim before a close end to the set saw me take it. The second set was equally close, this time with me getting the break at 4-4. In the last game I got ahead to 40-0 before Tim fought back to deuce. About 5 deuce points later I finally managed to get the win. An enjoyable match with Tim as ever."  -- Simon

It was a great game with Chris and I enjoyed getting a win today. I was feeling alright coming into the match despite having lost my last outing however I was aware that if I kept focused during each point, I’d be likely to contribute towards making it an exciting fixture this Saturday. I got the score to 5-0 in both set 1 and set 2 before Chris found a way onto the scoreboard for both sets so well done to him for doing so. It was a nice change of atmosphere having played all my previous games in the round outdoors so to get one of my matches played indoors is a good feeling. Good luck Chris for future matches!"  -- Mayur

  • "Great afternoon at Victoria park. Shankar was coming off a loss in his previous game where as I was coming off a victory. The floodlights at Victoria park came on just before the beginning of our game so it was a case of perfect timing with regards to losing daylight and commencing play. Shankar was able to stay in most of the points throughout the match and had me running forwards and backwards often. I was definitely the luckiest of the two players because I won quite a few points where the tennis ball clipped the net and landed in as well as a few points won when the tennis ball hit the frame of my racket and landed in rather than winning the points skilfully. Glad to get myself over the finish line. Good luck Shankar for future matches!"  -- Mayur

Player Comments:

  • "This was a nice match on a cold Saturday morning outside and it included a few sunny spells and luckily no rain. Mihai battled well although it wasn’t to be his morning. The first set had all breaks of serve up to 5-5 when I held my serve to get the score to 6-5 but Mihai followed suit and held serve but he fell short in the tiebreak. The 2nd set was a bit easier for me because of persistent errors resulting in more points on my side of the scoreboard. I tried to play to my strengths but couldn’t really raise my level especially during set 1 because it was a closely matched contest right from the get go so there might be a different result next time. To summarise, it was a good opening match to the round. Good luck Mihai for future matches!"  -- Mayur
