Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "Really tough match played by 2 rather workmanlike players with similar (in) abilities. Played in often testing conditions with both sun and wind alternating to frustrate, and on a pretty ordinary Savanna surface that played like the 5th day of a Test Match at the Adelaide Oval. The first set went the full distance, even though I went 4-0 up only for Adam to then win 5 on the bounce to go 4-5. That said, it had tie break written all over it, and typically that went the distance also although I just pipped it at 7-5. The 2nd set was equally tough as we reached 4-4, and another inevitable tie-break. However, it was not to be as I managed to break Adam to go 5-4, and then held my nerve to serve out for the win. Really closely fought match."  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "Second time I have played Darryl and a really closely fought contest once more. This time I managed to keep my nose in front in both sets, despite Darryl’s scary comeback from 5-1 down in the first set. Second set saw me go 5-2 ahead only for him to pull it back to 5-4, again. It was a really good quality match, we both played some excellent points and made some great winning shots. (Despite a full Vicky park and balls flying everywhere across the courts) This has been the most competitive Group 2 I have had the pleasure of playing in, from the low of losing to Chen in my first match, to the high of winning today. A real rollercoaster. Hope to play everyone in the not to distant future. Good luck for the next round all of you. "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt Aaron Darby (Sep 8) 5-7, 6-4, 7-6

Player Comments:

  • "What an absolute marathon of a match against Aaron, 2.5 hours on the indoor courts at Loughborough uni. First set couldn't have started any better for me as I broke early to lead 3-0, then Aaron moved up a gear and bombarded me with hard flat forehand shots to take the set. It was the same pattern in the 2nd set, I was up 3-0 when Aaron began his fight back, determined not to squander the lead again I upped my game to win the set. We both held serves in the 3rd set until 3-3 when Aaron broke my serve and held his to lead 5-3, staring at defeat I battled on desperately to win the next 2 games only for Aaron to break back and serve for the match at 6-5, I somehow broke his serve and won the tie break 7-0. A tough but enjoyable game! "  -- Lin
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Aaron Darby (Sep 7) 6-3, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great match in perfect conditions. Somehow I came out strong to lead 5-1 in the first set, but Aaron fought back to ensure that I wasn't going to feel over-confident. Where I managed to win through a number of drop shots in the first set Aaaron pulled back to win the second with some excellent top spin winners. This left us both a bit nervy and tired (at least I was) by the third set. Here we both constantly broke each others serve, knowing that whoever held serve might win the match. At 4-4, I was fortunate to hold serve and go 5-4 up. This meant a psychological advantage which enabled me to break Aarons serve and take the match. As always with Aaron it was thoroughly enjoyable and keeps us all wondering who will win the group !"  -- Tim
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Liam Mullis (Sep 5) 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What a slog. We finished this match off after a 2 hour tussle 2 week’s ago. This was no different. We both conceded that we played some dog awful shots, but this was from the nature of the game rather than lack of fitness or technical ability. It was a great workout but a really frustrating encounter for both of us as our styles match each other. Running and running and always getting the ball back. I think I just managed to edge the third set by coming into the net more frequently. Happy to play Liam again anytime. I think that’s the longest match I’ve ever played in the league, so I’ll book the whole day off next time mate." Owain
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Liam Mullis (Aug 28) 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What a match !!! I won the first game and then lost 8 games in a row I thought I was gonna get thrashed. Then the momentum changed slightly but Liam was up 5-3 in the second set which I managed to get to a tiebreak and then I was playing well in the tiebreak for Liam to then have a match point. I was happy to get the set in the third Liam broke me in the first game and then I thought it’s all over now but played some really good tennis and came away with my maiden victory against Liam after several meetings. Always a tough opponent who has a steady game and always do well in the league. Look forward to a rematch in the future mate"  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentLiam Mullis bt Lin Chen (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Tough game in blustery and damp conditions, neither of us played anywhere near our best, apart from a nice ace in the second set my first serve was almost non existent and Chen punished me plenty of times and hit some great winners, my consistent returning game got me out of trouble in this one as I was nowhere near my best, I’d say I played terribly in all honesty and made so many unforced stupid errors, but I don’t think my game suits Chen at all and that was of course to my advantage, great to see Chen again he’s a thoroughly bloody nice bloke! Glad to get a third game in this gaining my bonus points and look forward to playing again some time."  -- Liam
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Tim Ettrick (Aug 27) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A breezy overcast August bank holiday Monday saw Tim and I lock horns in a closely fought contest. I’m he first set was a tipsy turvy affair from me, couldn’t get my serve going and Tim’s consistency and defence nearly did for me. I was lucky to come through that set and managed to take the advantage in the second of a couple of close games at the start. Going 4-0 I managed to focus and take the set and the match. Well played Tim and good luck for your last match. "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentDarryl Clarke bt Lin Chen (Aug 23) 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "What a match! Both hitting some great winners and it was very close. The weather couldn’t make its mind up wether to rain or blow the ball everywhere. First set we were breaking each other’s serve back and forth but managed to pull my serves out for the tiebreak. Second set was similar me being down 1-5 in the tiebreak and coming back to win it 7-5. Such an enjoyable match good luck for the rest mate."  -- Darryl
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Lin Chen (Aug 20) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Pleasure to play Lin after at least two years of not having a match. I distinctly remember losing last time .Fortunately, I was able to match some of his strengths this time and although I came away with a comfortable result, it was not without a lot of tension and close points. I think it is now 1-1 in matches, so I look forward to the next one. Good luck with the rest of your games, Lin."  -- Tim
  • "Tim started playing unbelievable well just as the guys on the court behind us started smoking some super strength weed!! Coincidence?? :D," -- Lin
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Aaron Darby (Aug 20) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What a match, a real sluggfest. The first set was a combination of big hitting from both of us. the luck of the net chord (twice) and lucky miss hits off the frame (at least four) I think was the difference and I was glad to come through the set and push on to win the second. Very evenly matched and great gamesmanship from Aaron. Great to play you, good luck for your next one. "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt Owain Ford (Aug 18) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another closely fought game against Owain on a windy and grey Saturday morning. Even though our serves were hampered by the wind we still had plenty of long grinding rallies. Owain's sportsmanship was outstanding as usual and he was superb at the net, showing great reflex and agility to hit some truly classy volleys. Good luck for the rest of your games mate! "  -- Lin
Reveal CommentLiam Mullis bt Tim Ettrick (Aug 13) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "We started this game on Thursday before the heavens opened up and finished it today, the first set everything went my way including the luck and I was on fire and probably played the set of my life, we reconvened at 2-1 in the second and Tim really started to play well towards the end of the set but it was kind of too late, completely the opposite of our previous games, but we played a friendly third set and that was more like our previous encounters and incredibly tight and Tim really upped his game for that, you always have to fight hard against Tim because he’ll return pretty much everything, happy with a convincing win."  -- Liam
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Darryl Clarke (Aug 13) 6-4, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "What a match with the wind playing havoc we decided to play indoors. This played to my advantage until second set at 4-3 to me, we moved outside. Then daz started serving better and I struggled with the wind, hence why I won 1 of the next 5 games so went to a decider. Daz started with a strong service hold and I struggled to hold serve but then I believe because daz didn’t break me then that was the turning point and I completed the match. Some fantastic rallies and winners played today great match look forward to playing you again in the future"  -- Aaron

Reveal CommentDarryl Clarke bt Tim Ettrick (Aug 8) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Another good match against Tim. Always a joy playing tim as there were many great rallies and the match went back and forth. Tim is like playing against a wall everything just comes back. The second set Tim pushed hard and got his break to go 5-4 up to serve out for the second set only for me to break straight back and to go on to win it 7-5. Great match Tim good luck for your future matches mate"  -- Darryl
Reveal CommentLiam Mullis bt Darryl Clarke (Aug 3) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Crazy game, the first 5 games neither of us held serve and it was very tight, then managed to hold for 4-2 and eventually won the set 6-3, the second set was a pendulum swing of all pendulum swings, Darryl really upped his game and smashed me to death to take a 4-1 lead and was cruising, I figured the set was over and I just relaxed I guess and started to play quite well and went for it a bit more, unbelievably things started to go my way and I won every game from that point on to win the set 6-4 after thinking I would lose it 6-1, tough tough game in really humid conditions, toughest 2 sets I’ve ever played and Darryl is probably the best player I’ve ever played at the net, barely got a ball past him when he came to the net."  -- Liam

Then we had to stop play for about 10 minutes due a light rain shower. After we resumed the momentum shifted in my favour and I went on to win the next 9 games in a row. Great match with several of the games going to deuce and some good rallies. Look forward to playing again soon."  -- Shuaib

Player Comments:

  • "Another very close, epic match against Kunal - This time he just got the better of me! Every set was close - I was close to losing it in straight sets, but pulled back a deficit in the tie break. At 5-4 up in the final set, I was feeling confident, but a difficult service game with some fantastic winners from Kunal brought it back to 5-5 and he saw out the set confidently. There was a slight threat of rain throughout, but it held off and the conditions were significantly more friendly than our last match in the heat of June! Best of luck with the rest of the round! Most of the first set was played with the setting sun glaring onto one side of the court. It made for a tricky start. Afterwards, I found some consistency and took the first set.
