Reveal CommentCallum Mclennan bt Owain Ford (Nov 25) 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Very edgy match with the low sun causing all kinds of issues for both of us. With one hat between us to shield our eyes, I got off to a quick start but Owain’s consistency put him 3-0 up in both the 2nd and 3rd sets. He hung in there and fought super hard to earn the second set after not managing to convert at least 5 set points before the tie break. Came down to a few missed returns in the 3rd set. An exciting match and a very sweaty hat. "  -- Callum

Síomón Macconshleibhe bt Callum Mclennan (Nov 11) 6-0, 6-2
Reveal CommentSimon Matthews bt Lin Chen (Nov 11) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A hard fought match pitching Chen's heavy topspin and great depth of shot against Simon's scurrying defence and range of shot. Both players struggled with serve early on but then enjoyed some great rallies with Simon winning the final long rally of set 1 to take it 6-4. More of the same in set 2 with Simon just keeping his nose in front to run out the winner 6-2. Really enjoyable match played in great spirit - thanks Chen."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentDaniel Sieczko bt Simon Matthews (Nov 8) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another great match against very friendly opponent. Very close 1st set lots of rallies and i somehow managed to get it on my side. Even better 2nd set where i thought i get Simon tired but he just couldn't stop running and every ball was coming back on my side. Really enjoyed the match, thanks and good luck in your remaining games Simon."  -- Daniel

Reveal CommentKarim Sobh bt Daniel Sieczko (Oct 31) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Great day and weather for some Tennis. It was a great and enjoyable game full of long rallies which left us both exhausted by the end of the match. The second set especially was very tight. Overall, a great start to the round."  -- Karim
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt Owain Ford (Oct 30) 7-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match took place on a dull and wet Sunday morning. First set started off well for me as I took the first 4 games, but in the blink of an eye Owain went into beast mode and won 5 games in a row! I had to dig deep to withstand the onslaught from Owain and to force a tie break which I luckily won. Second set was full of long rallies as Owain does not give away many cheap points. All in all very enjoyable match and good luck Owain in your future games! "  -- Lin
Reveal CommentSimon Matthews bt Callum Mclennan (Oct 28) 5-7, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • " A perfect afternnon and evening for playing tennis. A see-saw first set eventually saw Callum winning the final three games to take it 7-5. Simon got off to a good start in the second set and continued to win it 6-1. Very tight at the beginning of the third, neck and neck to 2-2 before Callum opened up a 4-2 lead. As fatigue began to set in Simon fought his way back, taking the set 6-4 and the match in the end. An enjoyable game."  -- Simon

Thanks for all the commentaries, it was fantastic to read about so many matches played in a great spirit.

Player Comments:

  • "Played Greg in the dome under the lights. A great match played in great spirit. The score and Greg's position doesn't reflect his ability and he hit some very good shots. A pleasure to have at the club and a very nice guy. He finds good angles and will certainly kick on with his results I'm sure. Thanks for the game Greg and good look in the next group matches!"  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "A lot of games and points were closer than the result suggests. Well played Garry. Good luck with your remaining matches"  -- Tim

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentNick Thornton bt Liam Mullis (Dec 13) 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "We started on 13th and the first set lasted so long that we had to finish the match the following week. Liam raced into a 4-1 lead but I clawed back to lead 5-4. It ended up in a tie break with Liam deservedly won. I lead 4-1 in the second before Liam mounted his own comeback to 4-3. At the resume of the match days later i held serve and broke to take the 2nd set. The decider began with with a long service game, and some great points. I had hit my stride and took the deciding set. Some great tennis played over a very long match."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentStephen Burbidge bt Tim Ettrick (Dec 11) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match. The first set was much closer than the score suggests, both of us were blowing hard after some long rallies. A couple of points going the other way and the whole match could have gone the other way. Thanks for the game Tim and good luck with your remaining fixture. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentNick Thornton bt Tim Ettrick (Dec 10) 6-1, 1-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Even though conditions were tricky, we'd managed to complete the match. After getting a couple of breaks in the first I secured the first set, but Tim came back and broke immediately and maintained his comeback to take the second. After Tim broke early in the decider, I had to dig deep and broke back twice. I served for the match but after an epic game he broke me, but I broke in the next game to take the match. Great match, looking forward to playing again!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentStephen Burbidge bt Greg Moore (Dec 8) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match played in great spirit. It took Greg a good set and a half to warm up and the match suddenly got very competitive with Greg hitting form and winning three games in a row. Then at match point the lights went out and took 15 minutes to come back on again. Good luck in the future and hopefully our paths will cross again. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentEamonn Canavan bt Liam Mullis (Dec 5) 6-0, 4-1 Liam Mullis Retired

Player Comments:

  • "It was a cold damp day for our match. Liam had not played on savannah courts before and the lower bounce of the courts was even lower due to the cold and the damp getting into the balls. Liam, although not 100% fit, was quick about the court and we played out plenty of good points. At 4:1 in the second set Liam conceded. "  -- Eamonn
Ashish Arora bt Tim Ettrick (Dec 3) 6-1, 6-2
Reveal CommentNick Thornton bt Gary Phillpott (Nov 30) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match on Clay, played in great spirit and some good tennis played. A great evening and I look forward to playing Gary again," -- Nick
Reveal CommentLiam Mullis bt Tim Ettrick (Nov 27) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Tim has beaten me before so I knew I was in for a tough game, even more evident after being 2-0 down in the first set and could have been 3-0, I managed to come back to make it 4-4, then won a long deuce game to take the lead for the first time and won the set 6-4, The second set was a much better set for me and I gained a 5-2 lead, before being broken to love to make it 5-3 so was thinking a comeback might be on after being 30 love down, but managed to turn it around and win the set 6-3, some good long rallies and a couple of them were ridiculous, Tim is such a tricky opponent and seems to return everything so is difficult to win points against, enjoyable game played fairly on both sides."  -- Liam
Reveal CommentEamonn Canavan bt Nick Thornton (Nov 26) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was a great day to have a game and we went on into the night. We had plenty of rallies and I eventually learned that there were certain places where it was unwise to give Nick the ball as he consistently put it away. I look forward to playing Nick again soon."  -- Eamonn
  • "A very good and consistent opponent. Eamonn is tough to beat and certainly knows his way around a court with good consistent strokes. Look forward to the rematch!" -- Nick
Reveal CommentGreg Moore bt Gary Phillpott (Nov 23) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match at a top class venue with a very friendly opponent! We had a great match that was much closer than the score would suggest, with almost every game going to dunce! A thoroughly enjoyable game Gary, thank you and good luck in the rest of your matches!"  -- Greg
Reveal CommentStephen Burbidge bt Liam Mullis (Nov 20) 6-2, 4-0 Liam Mullis Retired

Player Comments:

  • "After the first set of incredibly long rallies, Liam's ankle injury forced him to retire and concede the match. We were very lucky with the weather and the courts although damp were definitely playable. Good luck with the rest of your matches Liam, I hope the ankle recovers quickly. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentStephen Burbidge bt Eamonn Canavan (Nov 16) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "My first night match of the winter league, played under the Syston floodlights, was a very energetic affair. Stephen had me running all about the court with some great angled forehand drives. We both struggled with our service game, but Stephen managed better than me and put in some good spin serves which caught me out. Ultimately Stephen was much better at finishing each point, and while we had many long rallies his ability to put it away was the key factor."  -- Eamonn
Reveal CommentEamonn Canavan bt Gary Phillpott (Nov 16) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Gary and I had to compete in some windy conditions and had an enjoyable time trying to anticipate how it would impact our shots. We had plenty of rallies and I learned a bit from Gary about how cricket techniques could be applied to tennis. All the best for your remaining games."  -- Eamonn
Reveal CommentEamonn Canavan bt Tim Ettrick (Nov 14) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Had a great match on the Evington Courts, my first time playing there. We both raced around and got very exhausted, finishing just before the Super Moon was supposed to appear, unfortunately too much cloud cover to see it. The second set started with a huge game which Tim eventually won after a whole lot of deuces. He then raced into a 4 - 1 lead and I just managed to claw my way back into the set, the balls remained just about bright enough to see in the darkening evening light. Had a couple of people asking about the local league tennis, one who was particularly interested in joining."  -- Eamonn

Reveal CommentAshish Arora bt Eamonn Canavan (Nov 9) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Ashish played excellent tennis in the first set and closed it out with an emphatic 6-1 score. I managed to find my feet better in the second set and had high hopes of extending the match to three sets but Ashish held out to win by a tie break. It was a great match and I learned a lot."  -- Eamonn
Reveal CommentStephen Burbidge bt Gary Phillpott (Nov 7) 6-0, 6-1

Reveal CommentEamonn Canavan bt Greg Moore (Nov 7) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to catch up with Greg again, although it was much colder than our summer match. We had some great rallies and Greg was putting in some punishing serves, they were staying really low and going out wide. We finished just before the rain which was good. All the best fro your next matches."  -- Eamonn

Disappointing to see that not everyone got away from the start line in this round - please do let us know if you are struggling to set up matches. The tennis that was played was of a competitive nature and included a three set marathon between eventual champion Dan and runner up William. Now William dug deep to win this match and had he played a bit more tennis the standings may have been different but as it is Dan takes the crown - well played both!
