Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "Great to see Arpan again and enjoy another match. Not as close as last time we played but we played a third set after the match that Arpan won 6-3 with some great shots so I think I was just lucky to catch him before he got into full flow. Thanks for the game Arpan, look forward to playing again soon."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentSimon Matthews bt Steve Kopandy (Aug 4) 6-4, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Wow, what a brilliant match! Steve and I were so closely matched. After I edged the first set 6-4 Steve found his rhythm and raced to a 5-0 lead in the second. I built a little momentum in scraping 3 games before Steve duly levelled the match 3-6. The final set was so close, Steve hitting a series of outstanding passing shots every time I edged into the lead. At 5-3 another superb pass at match point down and Steve broke and then held to level again at 5-5. I held on to my serve to go 6-5 up and then ear to three break points of my own in the next game. Steve saved one and then saw a cross court forehand just drift wide to give me the match with my third match point. Well played Steve, it couldn't have been closer."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentNimesh Purshottam bt Steve Kopandy (Aug 3) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great playing Steve on windy condition unfortunate for Steve his racket string snapped on 3rd game of first set. Steve was to keen to carry despite being in the disadvantage position. Thanks Steve."  -- Nimesh
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt Arpan Singla (Jul 23) 6-3, 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Second decent match of the league for me, always enjoyable playing friendly players like Arpan. We both started cautiously in the first set, it was even till 2-2 when I got the break, Arpan immediately upped his game, earned himself multiple break points in my service game, luckily I held for 4-2. We had possibly the longest rally at set point, 15 shots or more back and forth, then an unfortunate slip from Arpan finally gave me the set. I kept up the momentum and was up 4-2 in the second, then Arpan started landing his big first serve and hitting some great topspin shots and won the next 4 games in a row. Last set sun came out and fatigue set in for us both, I played more defensively to grind out the win after a lot deuces. Good game mate!"  -- Lin
Reveal CommentAshish Arora bt Iqbal Khan (Jul 21) 6-3, 4-1 Iqbal Khan Retired

  • "Wonderful playing against Iqbal who has a great personality- unfortunately he had to retire because of a back issue. He has some great serves and a nice backhand. Hope you have a swift recovery Iqbal. "  -- Ashish
Reveal CommentNimesh Purshottam bt Arpan Singla (Jul 21) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great match and equally good player. Windy condition did not help either of us to get any quality shots and Arpan first serves misfiring helped me along. Thanks for the match Arpan and all the best for the rest of the draw."  -- Nimesh
Reveal CommentSimon Matthews bt Lin Chen (Jul 20) 2-6, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Chen again and enjoy another cracking match. As the match began Chen was on fire, whipped cross court forehands, brutal drop shots and dazzling passing shots, a 5-1 lead was quickly converted to a first set win, 6-2. The second set was far tighter, never more than 2 games in it as I eventually secured it 6-4. We both began to struggle with our serve but enjoyed some great rallies in the third set, Chen saving two match points before I finally secured a hard fought and unlikely win, 6-2. Thanks for the game Chen, really enjoyed it. All the best for your next few matches."  -- Simon

  • "Good match with some interesting rallies!! Nice weather comparing with the previous week, when we had to cancel the match. It was a pleasure meeting you Matt, thanks for telling me that George is left handed ;) I'll try to take advantage of that in our last match of the league."  -- Victor
Reveal CommentNikhil Joshi bt George Buschbeck (Aug 13) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A tight, yet exciting encounter against George on a fine Sunday afternoon at Victoria Park. George raced into a deserved 1-3 lead in the first set, with some great shots. I managed to claw my way back into the set by winning the next 4 games to make it 5-3. After initially saving two set points, I wasn't to be denied on a third occasion and managed to win the set 6-4. The second set was tight again, initially at 2-2. But with tired legs creeping in, after many marathon rallies, I managed to take the second set 6-2. George, it was a pleasure meet and play you! Looking forward to playing you again in the future! This match concludes the round for myself. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting & playing new people. See you in the next round!"  -- Nikhil
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Matthew Quinn (Aug 12) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was definitely my day today and it was a pleasure to play Matt again, having played in the league over a year ago I think. I started off a little quicker this morning and took the first set and then most of the games in second went to deuce as I managed to battle through. That's it for me this round, good luck in your last match Matt and thanks everyone for the games, hope to see you all back and signed up for the next round. The more consistently people sign up the better the league will become. Cheers all, Owain. "  -- Owain

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure to finally meet and play Kunal. Some great shots and rallies, with many games going to deuce. The first set finished 6-2. The second set, however, was a much closer affair finishing 6-4. Looking forward to playing you again mate. All the best!"  -- Nikhil
Reveal CommentNikhil Joshi bt Dan Warren (Aug 6) 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "A great match in windy conditions at Victoria Park. Although 6-4 7-6 was the final outcome, it was a very tight match and on another day Dan could've easily ended up as the winner. The first set was neck and neck at 4-4, before I managed to win the next two games to make it 6-4. Dan started the second set excellently with a 4-1 lead. But after a combination of good play and good fortune the score ended up at 6-6. The tie break to decide the set really could've gone either way. Was a pleasure meeting you Dan - great guy, sportsman and player. Looking forward to seeing you again in the next round! -- Nikhil"  -- Nikhil
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Kunal Badami (Aug 5) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet and play Kunal this morning. We had a change of venue due to the carnival closing off the courts at Vicky Park. The relocation to Abbey Park worked though as we were the only ones there. A good solid match to kick off the weekend. Some lovely rallies and deep baseline shots. Cheers for the match K. "  -- Owain

Reveal CommentDan Warren bt Kunal Badami (Jul 23) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very very good game here tonight against a strong opponent in Kunal. The first set was all going my way until Kunal found a bit of range and rhythm to make me work for it. The 2nd set was a much closer affair with a monster 20 minute game at 3-3 deciding the course of the set, luckily I managed to take it and then broke Kunal to go 5-3, however Kunal is a strong opponent and he broke me back forcing me to play my best tennis to win in the next game. Great great bloke is Kunal and l look forward to playing again very soon, good luck for the remainder mate. "  -- Dan

  • "Dan and I have been following each other's trials and tribulations in this league and finally got to go toe toe on a lovely cool, sunny saturday morning at LFE. This was my first victory on the clay and I was very pleased with it. Great to finally meet you Dan, good luck in your remaining matches. "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Nikhil Joshi (Jul 19) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A muggy muggy day at Vicky Park. A pleasure to play you Nik. This was a really competative match with most games going to deuce in the open exchanges of the sets. Once again I managed to be consistent enough to see the first set through and then in the second set managed to make some decent decisions and push on from 2-2 to take the victory, despite facing break points in both my following service games. Good luck in your next match Nik. "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentGeorge Buschbeck bt Kunal Badami (Jul 16) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Always great to play Kunal - friendly guy and very competitive. I took a solid 5-2 lead in the first set and Kunal was finding his rhythm, but I managed to close it out without a tie break. The second set was similar, I managed to find a break early and get a few games ahead. Kunal had a good service game at 5-3 to forced me to serve for the set. Wish him the best of luck for the rest of the tournament and look forward to playing again soon :) Vamos!"  -- George
Reveal CommentVictor Avila bt Dan Warren (Jul 16) 7-5, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Well my Vicky park jinx continues after another marathon match against a top player in victor. I had set points in the first but victor held to make it 5-5 and then I completely imploded and blew the set. The 2nd was much better with me taking a four nil lead before being pulled back due to the blinding sun however I held out and took it. 3rd set from myself was quite frankly pathetic with victor going up 5 nil and any chance I had gone. Victor is a good composed player and a very nice chap who I look forward to meeting again sometime very soon. Good luck with the remainder mate "  -- Dan
Reveal CommentGeorge Buschbeck bt Matthew Quinn (Jul 15) 6-7 (13-15), 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Quinn started strongly with a break of serve and I struggled to find my form in the opening games. I eventually broke back to 4-4, and we stayed even until the tie break, which Quinn eventually took at 15-13! (both of us with multiple set points). After that set, I raced to a 5-1 lead in the second and looked comfortable, but felt a little nervous at 5-3 before finishing it off. The final set went back and forth with both of us leading at various points. With the night drawing in, the sun became an issue and at 5-4, Quinn was facing the sun and I managed to take the advantage and lead to 6-5. Our final game was tense, this time me facing the sun and I just managed to serve out! An incredible 2 hour 20 minute match! Till next time Quinn! :)"  -- George
Reveal CommentMatthew Quinn bt Dan Warren (Jul 9) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It's that boy Quinn with another win! And throughly deserved as well mate. The first set went all wrong for me as I really struggled to find anything good shot wise against a guy who just keeps running and plays the ball behind him better than I've ever seen anyone do it. The second started the same as the first but then a monster of a game at 3-0 to Matt, gave me some hope, there must of been over 15 deuces before I won it. We then had to have an impromptu venue change due to a very busy Vicky park, where I pulled it back to 3-3, then 4-4, I then blew two glorious break chances to make it 5-4 and Matt held out giving him the advantage and after a poor service game from me Matt got over the line. Well played mate and good luck for remainder"  -- Dan
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt Victor Avila (Jul 9) 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-1)

Player Comments:

  • "I have had some epic battles in this league but I don't think any of them come close to this one for sheer bloody-mindedness. It was hot, but not too hot and we both found our stride in the first set, first me racing to a 5-1 lead and then Victor pegging me back to level and then force the tie-break, which I won. So an hour and 20 mins played so far and the word 'deuce' has now lost all meaning! The second set started with me dropping serve and then breaking back and then holding to lead 2-1, then Victor went 3-2 ahead then me 4-3, I took a chance on a shot and managed to break to go 5-3, I was not to see a match point though until 5-4 and then Victor levelled and again a tie break decided this close encounter. I am now just a puddle. "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentOwain Ford bt George Buschbeck (Jul 8) 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "THAT!! was one of the hottest matches I have ever played. A titanic first set (1hr 15 mins)that could have gone either way at times. I believe George counted 7 deuces in one of the games. The tie break was tense and very edgy with George taking it 9-7. Luckily for me I was able to regroup and my percentage game clicked back into play in the 2nd and 3rd sets to see me through after 2hrs 20 mins of play. Exhausted, shattered, happy with the win, pass me the ice bath. Good luck for your future matches George. A pleasure to meet such a friendly player (with a killer touch!) "  -- Owain
Reveal CommentMatthew Quinn bt Kunal Badami (Jul 8) 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The much loved El Classico fixture returned to the league today. The first set was an epic that lasted an hour and which I won in a tiebreak having saved a couple of set points earlier in the set. In the second set we both stepped up our games and the standard was, though I say so myself, rather high with lots of long rallies. This time Kunal won out 7-5. Having raced to a 3-0 lead in the last set I thought I had finally exhausted Kunal especially since he had played a practice match in the morning (!) but he still came back to 2-3 and the next game went to deuce, once I managed to win that game I finally had the edge and was able to close it out. I should say the net seemed to be on my side with a few bits of luck. Viva La Barcelona!"  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentVictor Avila bt Nikhil Joshi (Jul 6) 6-4, 2-6, 6-2

  • "Difficult beginning of the league this time, having to turn up a 1-3 against, then the match was balanced until 5-4 and braking Nikhil service, the set was over. The other two sets have been very quick one for each side... Was a pleasure meeting you Nikhil, best of luck for the rest of your matches"  -- Victor
Reveal CommentDan Warren bt George Buschbeck (Jul 6) 6-2, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic, competitive game of tennis played in the intense heat at LFE. The first set I found my rhythm quickly and 2-2 I reeled off four games to take set, at 2-0 in the second George found his range with his huge first serve and brilliant passing shots making it really tough for me to gain any advantage and he deservedly took the second set. I knew I'd have to raise my game in the third and hit the ball harder, there were quite a few close games and at 4-2 I felt George was on the comeback, and even when I served for the match George had me at 0-40 so I was glad to get over that line. Great bloke is George and I throughly enjoy our matches. Good luck for the remainder George. "  -- Dan
Reveal CommentMatthew Quinn bt Nikhil Joshi (Jul 5) 6-4, 0-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "On a beautiful, sunny day me and Nikhil played out a tense 3 set encounter on the top drawer Victoria Park courts. The first set was an incredibly close affair with a few crucial, close games going my way to allow me to eke out a 6-4 win. The second set was rather less close with Nikhil racing to a 6-0 win. The last set started in a similar fashion with Nikhil going 2-0 up if he had extended his lead any further then I wouldn't have recovered but I managed to win a few games in a row to swing the momentum my way and win another close set 6-3. I believe this was Nikhil's first league match he played a great match. Good luck with your other games Nikhil."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentNick Thornton bt George Buschbeck (Jul 2) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet and play George finally! After I played myself into a 3-0 lead, George found some rhythm. I lead 4-2 and managed to break and serve out the set. George came out the blocks quicker in the second set; holding serve and breaking for a 2-0 lead. I broke back and held to level. After that what followed was a mixture of breaks, great serves, lobs, drop shots, great rallies and tired legs as the second set was on a knife edge at 5-5. I got a vital break before George saved a match point on my serve, but I managed to wrap it up on the second. A great match, George is a great guy, good luck for the rest of your matches mate!"  -- Nick

  • "It was a pleasure to meet Adam for the first time.A real topsy turvy match where both of us seemed tentative a lot of the time.It really was a match of 3 halfs with a rain delay after the second set allowing me to recover my composure a little after a disastrous second set. This was Adams first match back after a long lay off,I quess i was lucky to play him when i did! Good luck Adam Tom"  -- Thomas
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt William Richardson (Jul 26) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good match, slightly affected by wet mud on court which led to Will slipping up before we changed courts. Match felt closer than the score suggests"  -- Tim

Player Comments:

  • "Great game on a great evening for it..."  -- William
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Thomas Baines (Jul 21) 7-6 (11-9), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great match which mostly hinged on the last games of the first set, some went to several deuces. Tom had taken an early 3-1 lead in the set, but we both came to top form by the end of the set. I will always remember the three recovery shots that nearly reached the stars and then by some random chance landed in ! The tie break switched to and fro between us, and although we were both nervey as demonstrated by one classic volleying ralley at the net which was more like playing badminton than tennis, we also both came up with some great shots to stop our opponent. Finally the set ended on one of Tom's shots going long. Tom got off to a nervous start to the second set losing on his serve and this gave me the advantage, but still very close."  -- Tim
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Martin Wiselka (Jul 20) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Both played well under challenging conditions as the sun was going down , making it a challenge to see on one side of the net. Nevertheless we played some good ralleys and we both played some good shots when at the side with the disadvantage. Thanks for the match Martin and good luck with your future games"  -- Tim
Ahmar Mahmood bt Thomas Baines (Jul 19) 6-1, 7-6
Reveal CommentShuaib Variava bt William Richardson (Jul 18) 6-4, 0-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great match against a great guy.....The first set was a very tense affair with both of us holding serve for the first 8 games. Then at 4-4, I managed to get the crucial break and hold to take the first set. The second set took a very dramatic twist: I relaxed a little too much and Will put on on his A-game to thrash me 6-0. He served superbly and his net approach play was second to none. The final set was similar to the first and thankfully I managed to play with the same consistency by holding all my serviice games and breaking twice to finish it at 6-3. A very enjoyable game with lots of rallies, great shots and plenty of thrills and spills along the way. Well played Will. All the best with your remaining matches."  -- Shuaib

Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Shyam Parmar (Jul 15) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Match was tight in the first set , although we mostly seemed to be breaking each others serve at the start !. Second set also started with renewed effort by both of us and some very close games and some long games that went to deuce. After 2 all , I was able to edge away. Really enjoyed the match against a competitive and friendly opponent. Good luck with your other matches Shyam."  -- Tim

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with lots and lots of long rallies. Ahmar returns everything back so you have to work hard to earn every point. All our games were close with several going to deuce. I recall one where we must have played over 10 deuce points! Thanks for the game. All the best with your other matches."  -- Shuaib

Player Comments:

  • "Great game today with Phil with some very long games throughout. Think all bar a couple went to deuce. First set Phil went 5-3 up and had set point but lost the set after I won 4 games in a row. Second set at 1-1 and advantage Phil tripped and hit the floor but he was happy to play on he grazed his knee and banged his head. But unfortunately he couldn't keep up his fight. Lovely chap and great to meet you good luck in your remaining matches"  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Greg Moore (Aug 10) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great match against Greg today on a sunny day on Greg's favoured surface at LFE. First set went on serve at the beginning then I won it well. Second set Greg started strong and went 3-0 up with a single break at 4-1 I managed to break back and then starting serving well to clinch the second set. Great feeling to get it done in two. Great match once again Greg. I'm on a bit of a run 5 wins in a row "  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Marcin Szymanski (Aug 4) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Marcin once again in the warm up his serve looked strong however he didn't manage to hold serve throughout the match. First set after first game was against serve until 5-3 then I held out. The third game in the second set must of lasted around 15 minutes I think we had around ten deuces if not more I managed to break if he would have won that game I think it would have been a closer match. Thanks for getting rid of the footballers Marcin hopefully see you in the next round good luck "  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentGary Phillpott bt Marcin Szymanski (Jul 27) 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Marcin is a delight to play tennis against. He showed great resilience in breaking back to take second set in a tie-break and at that stage I was uncertain if I would win another game. His serve can be venomous albeit it is currently a little inconsistent. Marcin has all the tools available to him to be a good player and with a little more experience will win most matches."  -- Gary
Reveal CommentGary Phillpott bt Chris Dines (Jul 25) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Chris Dines is the epitome of sportsman and competitor: champion of fair play - unable give up. We played at a busy LLTC where all 18 courts were in use. Unable to play on any of the 10 clays we watered a secluded outside savannah with copious amounts of sweat. Effort and determination often outweighed precision but points were hard-fought. Even with a 4 game buffer the 2nd set was always in doubt. Occasional lapses towards tentative play resulted in long baseline rallies, punctuated with scurrying retrieves and punched (or, on my part, framed) volleys. Our match encapsulated the essence of LTL: two strangers playing the game they love, fighting for every point then shaking hands and going home having promised to play each other again."  -- Gary
Reveal CommentGreg Moore bt Marcin Szymanski (Jul 24) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match down at Victoria Park with Marcin who has improved loads since the last time we played! The match was made tricky by the blinding sun that appeared just as we started to play after it had been cloudy all day and was looking like rain, but a great match nonetheless. As a bonus, we only had about 5 minutes of someone playing football on the next court as well, which was nice! Thank you for the game mate, good luck in your next ones!"  -- Greg
Reveal CommentChris Dines bt Greg Moore (Jul 23) 7-5, 5-7, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "What a match! A 3 1/2 hour epic! After a very close first set won by Chris, he was 5-1 up in the second and I thought that was it. Somehow I managed to win the next 6 games in a row and take it 7-5! Neither of us were on form today and by the third set we were both struggling, but Chris managed to edge out the last one 6-4. Well done Chris, awesome match!"  -- Greg
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Chris Dines (Jul 12) 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Second match of the day and another 3 setter. Great match this evening against chorus first set I was up 4-1 and then Chris pulled it back. Second set very similar I was up 4-2 but then lost 4 games in a row. It was a match of some fantastic rallies and can't wait to play Chris again good luck with your remaining matches mate"  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Gary Phillpott (Jul 12) 7-5, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Gary once again. First set was tight I should have had it at 6-4 but Gary broke me and it went to 5-5 but I took the next 2 games. Second set Gary decided to play with more depth and get some first serves in. Also I wasn't able to hold serve at all in the second. I think winning the second set surprised Gary more than me because the third set was pretty much one sided. Well played Gary good luck in your remaining matches"  -- Aaron

Chris Dines bt Marcin Szymanski (Jul 6) 6-2, 6-4
Reveal CommentGreg Moore bt Gary Phillpott (Jul 5) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A cracking 3 hour match, played on the clay in the roasting hot sun! It's always a joy to play Gary who is one of the friendliest players I've met and is a great sportsman. He's also improving massively every time I play him! Three points into the first game we had a massive side-to-side rally, which left us both huffing and puffing and I think we both spent the rest of this 3 hour epic trying to catch up from it! After I went 2-0 up in the first set Gary stepped it up and deservedly smashed the next 6 games in a row, he hit some excellent shots and ran me ragged. The next two sets were extremely close, but I was fortunate to just about keep my nerve at the right time and managed to edge them. Just! Thanks Gary, until next time!"  -- Greg
