Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

Player Comments:

  • "To say I was outplayed would be an understatement :P Ashish had me on the ropes right from the start. We did manage to have a few good rallies throughout and I was proud of one or two shots. In the end, he was just a better player than me and I wish him well for the rest of the tournament :)"  -- George
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt George Buschbeck (May 12) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "My final game and George's first was a closely contested battle, 2 gruelling long sets lasted nearly 2 hrs. George hadn't played much this year and was rusty in the early stages of the match. I quickly raced to a comfortable 3-1 lead and was 30-0 up on George's serve, out of nowhere George rained down 3 successive unreturnable first serves and then held for 3-2. Spurred on by the hold George played unbelievably and broke my serve after an exhaustingly long game of than 10 deuces! We were pretty much neck to neck till 5-5, then I managed to break and held out for 7-5. Similar in second set, I started strongly then George pulled back and I was lucky to grind out the win. An enjoyable match to finish an enjoyable round. All the best George! "  -- Lin

Reveal CommentNick Thornton bt Lin Chen (Apr 30) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Absolutely draining encounter with Chen today. He's a great guy, a fine player and he runs you ragged at times. We exchanged breaks in the first two games, but I held and then broke again to open up a lead. Chen fought and fought but I took the first set 6-2. Chen then launched his comeback at the start of the second, breaking then holding to go 2 up. What then ensued was a real battle. We exchanged a couple of breaks to go 4-4, I then held to make Chen serve to stay in it, which he did with some great tennis. It went 5-5, then Chen had break points, but after a very long game an ace helped me hold. Serving at 5-6 Chen battled, until I finally came though to take the match. Top guy, top player, top match. Thank you Chen."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentNick Thornton bt Adam Bogus (Apr 23) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Played in sunny conditions at Abbey Park, this was Adam's first match back after injury and my second. The first set was competitive, with some quality rallies and lots of chasing down lost causes. I got a couple of crucial breaks to take the first set 6-2. In the second I broke Adam in the first game, held serve, then broke again for a 3-0 lead. Adam then fought for a break of his own to take it to 3-1. Adam mounted a comeback to level at 3-3. I broke then held to lead 5-3, during which we played one seriously long service game. Adam served to stay in it and brought it back to 5-4, but I served out the match. Adam is a real battler, a great guy and it was a great match. Good luck for your other games!"  -- Nick

  • "Match took place on a sunny windless Saturday morning, we had some decent games despite we both struggled with our serves. Well played Matt. "  -- Lin
Reveal CommentDan Warren bt Nick Thornton (Apr 22) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match out in some lovely sunshine at LFE. First time I've met Nick today despite being a fellow member but must say he's a top bloke, fair with his calls and a top player. First set went 5-0 to me before Nick found some range on his massive first serve making it 5-1 and I must say at this point I felt some nerves but held it together to serve out the set. The second set was a much closer affair with two breaks making it one all before I then went 3-1 up before Nick starting finding some great shots to reel off the next three, I then won a tricky service game for 4 each and then held my nerve to break for 5-4, Nick applied the pressure on me in the last game but I held it out. Good luck Nick and look forward to playing again soon "  -- Dan
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt Arpan Singla (Apr 18) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Finally I get a win!! It was hard earned after 2 exhausting sets full of long rallies and non stop running against a much improved Arpan whose forehand shots have much more topspin and pace than a year ago, in one particular long rally I was dragged off the court twice by Arpan's down the line shots! Brilliant match! All the best in your following games Arpan. "  -- Lin
Reveal CommentDan Warren bt Lin Chen (Apr 15) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really pleased to get this next round underway with a win against a great player in Chen, he uses a lot of spin and is a solid all round player. The first set was a tight affair at 2 all in early stages before a break of serve allowed me the advantage to surge in front and take the set but it must be said that Chen gave me a lot of unforced errors. I went four nil up in the second set before Chen found some range with his terrific forehand to pull it back to 4-2 but again uncharacteristic errors from Chen allowed me to see out the set. Chen is a top guy and I wish him all the best for the round. "  -- Dan
Reveal CommentAshish Arora bt Lin Chen (Apr 14) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Damn, the losing streak continues...I thought life in group 2 would be easier, ha how wrong was I! My opening game ended in humbling defeat to Ashish, a solid player who hits with depth and accuracy. Despite the lose I still enjoyed the match as we had some good rallies and close games. Well played Ashish. "  -- Lin

A lot of long deuce games made for a long hard match which could easily gone to 3 sets.I was lucky with the tie break, got a few points ahead and managed to hold my nerve on my first serve.Really glad it didn't go to 3 as i was getting tired.Always great to play Aaron as our our styles are similar and makes for fast paced game. Player Comments:

  • "Much tougher match than the score suggests. We both were on serve for the first 6 games of the first set , with plenty of games going to deuce. Fortunately I got the vital break in the first set to go 4-3 up and to give me the critical advantage. The second set started like the first but this time I managed to get the break of serve sooner which made life easier for me and harder for Greg. A good enjoyable match with some memorable rallies. Well played Greg and good luck with the remaining games."  -- Tim

Player Comments:

  • "Finally I get a win yeah!!! I have had 3 of my 4 matches go to a third set. First set was one sided and I thought it would be over quickly but then throughout the second set my serving was horrendous and Marcin started getting some first serves in which made it more competitive. The third set was pretty much like the first set should have been completed in two but fair play to Marcin he kept plugging. He is a nice bloke who is just getting back into tennis good luck in your remaining matches marcin"  -- Aaron

This was a cracking match with a top man and a really good player and the score doesn't really tell the whole story with virtually every game going to duece! I have to say I was very pleased to win this match after Aaron beat me the last time around though! Thanks for inviting me to your club again Aaron and thanks for a great natured and friendly match. Good luck in your next matches mate!"  -- Greg

Reveal CommentLiam Mullis bt Aaron Darby (Apr 19) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very reminiscent of my game against Tim on Monday, tight for the first few games, then Aaron gave me a Tennis lesson and schooled me to win the last couple of games to take it 6-4, I had a bit of a Raquet malfunction at the end of the set and Aaron was kind enough to lend me one of his spares, he carried on and was 1-0 up in the 2nd, thought I was finished again and was completely on the ropes, and then I'm not sure what happened but Aaron's level dipped and mine went up and I got my fight back, combined with a bit of luck and comfortably took the next 2 sets, was quite surprised it happened that way, but that's Tennis for you, was good to play Aaron again though and if he does what he did in the 1st set the rest of the group are in trouble"  -- Liam

Player Comments:

  • "Another 2 hour plus 3 set contender for match of the group as expected (I was hoping it wouldn't be like this again) Tim came out on fire in the first set, took me to the cleaners despite the close score, 2nd set I went 1-0 up, then 2-1 down and thought I was finished, got back to 2-2, then 3-2 down but won 4 on the spin to take it to a 3rd, had a 3-1 lead and should have been 4-1 but Tim turned it around to 3-2, and it finished 6-3, Tim is my least favourite opponent (and I mean that in a good way) as it's never an easy game and drains me mentally, Tim fights all the way and no matter the score he always comes back and won't go away, not sure how many more of these type of games between us I can cope with, glad to start with a win though."  -- Liam
