Player Comments:

  • "It was an absolute pleasure to meet Simon having been told by many that he's a good bloke and a good Tennis player. I can confirm this is bang on. We had a great match and some great rallies. We both played well and on a personal note, I was really pleased to be playing well having had a poor run of form in recent months. Simon is mobile, fast, confident in at the net and has a serve that on occasion rifles at you as if he's fired it from a gun. He has attributes to his game that I hope to develop, particularly the decision making on when to come into the net. Well played. The match could have gone either way and I'm sure we will have plenty of battles moving forwards! Good luck with the rest of your matches 👍"  -- Edward

Reveal CommentSam Southall bt Richard Osborn (May 12) 6-2, 7-6 (7-0)

Player Comments:

  • "It was a match of many unforced errors from both players, a really sloppy fixture. I won an early break making it 2-0 and then Richard brought it back to 2-2 before I broke away fairly easy winning the first set 6-2. The second set was a different story, if it wasn’t me making the mistakes, it was Richard. We both struggled to keep the ball in play and weren’t good at finishing points. It stayed within 1 game for the whole set with many breaks. I was able to win the tiebreaker well, without making an error. Cheers for the game Richard, hopefully a smoother game for both of us next time?"  -- Sam

In the 2nd session I managed to get the upper hand to get the win. Sure we'll play again soon, don't kick me out the group chat!"  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "Darius, thanks for a very nice match. Some long rallies and decent shots from both players today. I managed to be a bit more consistent at the end and also gained some game points on my passing shots when Darius served and volleyed. Good luck in your next match and hope to play a friendly soon. "  -- Adam
Reveal CommentSam Southall bt Darius Muncelean (May 4) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Lucky to have won this one without dropping a set. I won ab early break in the first set which proved quite vital by the end as we then kept losing our service games, making it a 6-4 victory to myself in the first set. The second set, I didn’t come out strong and was totally out played by Darius. It was 3-0 to him and he had a game point to make it 4-0 but I had a word with myself and found myself within 1/2 games of Darius for the duration. It took me until 4-5 and set point to Darius on his serve to pull the break back and then I was able to win 7-5. Darius was very good with his net play and drop shots. His positioning was also good. I think if he had executed a few more crucial shots a little better, it could have been interesting!"  -- Sam

It has been a pleasure to see you and play with you again. Hope we can play a friendly soon. Good luck in you next game. "  -- Adam
Reveal CommentSam Southall bt Adam Bogus (Apr 28) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Really good match of tennis, some great winners hit by both players throughout. Adam killed it at the start of the first set, breaking me twice and leading 3-0. I had to step it up and play more attacking tennis. I managed to go hard and get to 4-4 before I took the next couple of games. The second set was a little more relaxed from my perspective. I took the lead at about 3-1 and then I soon got broke back making it 5-4 with Adam on serve. We had a very long final game with both having game points but I eventually managed to win it. Great fun! "  -- Sam
Reveal CommentThomas Meakin bt Matthew Vickers (Apr 23) 6-3, 6-0

Reveal CommentPaul Morris bt Richard Osborn (Apr 23) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Competitive match against Richard on the clay at Oadby tennis club. Richard struggled with a calf strain early on as he adjusted to the surface. I got up early in both sets but Richard is a fighter and put some good runs of games together. Look forward to playing again on the hard courts of Stoney Stanton."  -- Paul

Reveal CommentSam Southall bt Edward Morgan (Apr 19) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A fun evening tennis match with Edward at Hinckley, with one of the floodlights out causing some difficulty for both. I managed to start the fixture well and felt I served better than I usually do throughout the match. Edward hung in there and a few games could have gone his way over mine after some long deuce battles. Thanks for the match!"  -- Sam
Reveal CommentSam Southall bt Matthew Vickers (Apr 19) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A good fixture with some great shots coming from both players. I managed to come out the blocks well, getting a 5-0 lead in the first set. Matthew pulled back a couple of games before I took the set. The second set stayed a little more even for a while, Matthew held his nerve against quite a few break points and we stayed on serve until I finally managed to break to make it 4-2. A very fun match, I can picture Matthew being at the top end of the league when it’s all over, good player. "  -- Sam

Reveal CommentSam Southall bt Thomas Meakin (Apr 17) 6-3, 7-6 (7-0)

Player Comments:

  • "I managed to win the first set fairly convincingly, but the seconds set was a different story. Neither of us could win games on one side of the court for some reason. I went quite defensive and Thomas played well keeping the ball in court. I actually had to hold a set point to Thomas via a really long and safe rally. The tiebreaker came and I stepped it up a gear and managed to win it well. Good game and very nice guy, look forward to playing again. "  -- Sam

  • "This match was so close. We were equally matched in consistency. Every ball was coming back leading to some long rallies. I managed to keep my nose in front in the first set and take the crucial points. Most games went to deuce in both sets. At 3-1 and 4-2 up in the second set I thought it might go the way of the first only for Azhar to level brilliantly to make it 4-4. The next two games were a slug fest and I just managed to pull it back to go 5-4 up and serve out the match. A really good match played in great spirits. Good luck for your next matches mate. After that a second break and holding serve meant I took the first set. The second set went with serve till I was 2-1 up, then I got the vital break again, making it 3-1, and with a hold of serve 4-1. Fortunately got a second break and held on to win 6-1. I figured the best way to play the second was to adopt an attacking game whilst maintaining consistency. I did well in the latter and okay in the former. Overall a lovely game and a pleasure to play with Tim. "  -- Christopher

Player Comments:

  • "In the first set and first three games of the second set, Mark didn't quite get into his rythmn giving me a 6-1 advantage in set 1 and a 3-0 advantage in set 2. After that things changed a lot, especially when I was 5-2 and 40-0- giving me three match points. Mark saved these including one amazing return !. Mark saved all three match points and brough the match to 5-3 and then 5-4. Even in the next game Mark was a match point down but again heriocally saved the first one. Later I had another match point and was relieved to win it as Mark was constantly improving. Good luck with the rest of your games, Mark"  -- Tim
Reveal CommentChristopher Moute bt Mark Parry-Shovlin (May 13) 6-3, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Mark. Mark took a 3-1 lead in the first set, which I was able to overturn into a set win. A similar experience in the second set, this time Mark over turning my lead to take the set. The final set was a bit rushed as our court time was nearly finished. So I think Mark increased his attacking game, but this lead to a higher unforced error rate, which allowed me to take the final set. Thanks for the game Mark, and all the best."  -- Christopher

Player Comments:

  • "A truly epic match. In the first set it was evenly matched till throughout, although Daniel was 3-5 ahead in the tie break. Then I pulled back three points to get it to 6-5 . However with a set point opportunity I served a double fault !. Somehow in spite of missing that, in those closing points I took the first se 9-7 in the tie break. Again we matched each other game by game till it got to 4-4. Here in the next game with Daniel serving there seemed to be a key point where he could have got ahead but he put a passing shot wide. Much relied I broke to be 5-4 up then held serve to win 6-4. It was an exhausting game for us both, probably averaging 10 stroke points most times ! Well played Daniel. Good luck with your remaining games."  -- Tim

  • "I invited Darren to play at Victoria Park on what turned out to be a night of a mixture of good and bad weather. The weather during set 1 was quite good. Set 2 had windy weather and it was raining causing both players to make adjustments so not to slide or slip and fall over on the wet playing surface. Our tennis was at a good level. Darren was getting more confident in the latter stages of set 2 when his nice serve resulted in some of my returns being hit into the net and easy points lost. In all fairness my opponent deserved more out of the match. Luckily I played a strong tennis match from start to end. Tonight I beat one of the best players in the group so to say that I’m elated is an understatement. Good luck Darren for future matches!"  -- Mayur

  • "This was a nice result on my return to tennis after the previous match. This match was played on a calm Monday night at Victoria Park. I started very quickly getting myself 5-0 ahead in set 1 but I couldn’t serve out the set because Michael played great tennis. He started out extremely well in set 2 by breaking serve in the opening game however I played my part in what was a lucky set of tennis from my perspective with many calls going in my favour such as when a tennis ball clipped the net whilst in play and landed in. Michael was a tough challenger and unfortunately it wasn’t to be his night. I’m positive that the result might’ve gone against me on another night. I’m really glad that I was the winner. • "The match was played on a nice Tuesday afternoon at Abbey Park, in warm weather. It was great to play Matt again in a local tennis leagues group match. Stay on your toes, move your feet and stay in the point is the advice I gave to Matt because that was my strategy going into the match. It was difficult to take pleasure in my victory because of the way the match ended when Matt withdrew. The positives are that I was serving well and I fought hard during each point. I was lucky that some of my shots were clipping the tramlines without any defence and thus scoring me points. I’m sorry about your injury, Matt. I had fun when I was returning serve and I was particularly focused on not losing easy points today. Good luck Matt for future matches!"  -- Mayur

  • "The match was played on a lovely Wednesday morning at Abbey Park. James is a great guy and it was fun playing him again. He has an awesome sporting mind. Our last meeting was in the summer and I was on the winning side then. Today was a similar type of match although the surroundings were different because the last match was at Victoria park. I think I have improved since then so for James to hang around in both sets and get on the scoreboard means he did well. I was made to work harder in set 2 than in set 1. James has a nice variety of strokes and I was well beaten a couple of times including getting lobbed and having no answer to some other winners that he hit. I held my own and I’m happy with the win. • "The match was played on a warm Friday afternoon at Victoria Park. Shankar invited me to play there. I chose to receive and not be on serve to start the match. Despite trying my best I just could not find any good serves during set 1. I was fortunate to win 4 games in a row at one point during set 1. I was lucky enough to be serving much better in set 2. I even hit some aces. I was really annoyed with myself after 5-0 in set 2 when I served for the set and Shankar broke serve to win the game and get the score to 1-5. It was a difficult match in nice playing conditions and I’m happy I won. I think I grew into the match. In the end it was simple things such as staying in each point that got me the victory. Good luck Shankar for future matches!"  -- Mayur
