  • "This was a very tight match in windy conditions and many of the games went to deuce. I managed to convert more of the key points to seal the win, but if Aaron had hit the ball as well as he did in the friendly third set that we played, then the result might have been different. Looking forward to playing you again at LFE next round."  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "What a round im having my first win over a really tricky player. The conditions were very tricky throughout but I maybe used a bit of the wind to my advantage. I hit 90% of the spots I aimed for and hardly put a foot wrong to be fair. Tom is a very decent guy and I’m sure he will dust himself off and spring right back into action. Looking forward to a friendly mate "  -- Aaron

Reveal CommentPaul Richmond bt Chris Glover (Sep 25) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was very tight with multiple service breaks, before I managed to hold onto my serve to take it. I tightened up my game in the second set but was helped by several shank winners and a couple of fortunate net cords. It's always enjoyable playing you Chris, and good luck in your next matches. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Richmond bt Harun Farah (Sep 23) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was one of the toughest matches I've ever played. I never felt in control from start to finish as Harun dominated most of the rallies with his shots, and I ended up having to chase down balls and hack them back over the net just to stay in the point. I was a break down in both sets but managed to stay in touch and return enough balls to win the necessary points to see the match out. Thanks for the game Harun. You certainly didn't get the result that you deserved today and I'm definitely looking forward to playing you again."  -- Paul

Reveal CommentMatthew Blaney bt Thomas Meakin (Sep 22) 5-7, 6-4, [12-10]

Player Comments:

  • "Usually I would prefer being on the defensive and using my opponents power, however Tom's game style meant I had to adapt. In the first set I made plenty of errors compliment to Tom's ability to reach almost everything. I was always behind (2-0, 5-3 before bringing it back to 5-5 - Tom managed to squeeze through 7-5). In the second set it started in a similar pattern, however I changed my ways to come from 3-1 down to win 6-4. We decided that due to the weather (constant rain to play a Championship Tiebreaker). Tom had the better of the breaker and found himself in a promising position of 9-7 ahead. I managed to save 3 match points to win 12-10 in an absolute thriller. Well played Tom and good look with the rest of your matches."  -- Matthew

Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Adam Bogus (Sep 20) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "So I finally get my second win against Adam who is such a consistent player. I did this for the league as everyone says to me just beat Adam for me well I’ve done it guys. I actually feel I played really well in all my matches but seem to switch off at the pivotal points. I did that in the first set and thought after that it was going to be a straight forward win for Adam. Second set Adam made a few more errors and I managed to remain calm. The decider I started well and went 2-0 up but then Adam won the next 3 games then I won the following 3 games. Adam held serve to ask the question can I serve it out? Well it started poor 0-30 I thought I’ve lost it again but managed to get to match point and clinch it on my second match point ?"  -- Aaron

Reveal CommentMatthew Blaney bt Harun Farah (Sep 14) 6-2, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great match today Harun and also thanks for hosting. The first set was all one way traffic and well done to Harun for saving multiple break points to hold a couple of games. The second set started off in a similar fashion, however Harun found some more consistency to bring the game back from being a break down. He went into a 5-3 lead. I pulled this back to 5-5 before Harun won the set 7-5. The third set was similar to the first, however both of us were tiring. I managed to take this one 6-2. Look forward to playing you again. Thanks, Matt "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMatthew Blaney bt Aaron Darby (Sep 13) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Good match as always Aaron. First set I flew into a 4-1 lead. Aaron came back to 4-3 on serve. I broke again before holding out to win S1 6-3. The second was different, Aaron grew into the match and took a 5-2 lead. I managed to hold my serve for 5-3 to ask the question and played what was probably my best game of the match to break back. Second set score 7-5. Look forward to our next match."  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "Despite knowing Daniel had lost all his matches, it didn't feel that way....as he is a tough slippery player, and manages to get most things back. In the end, I guess Daniel made more mistakes than me. Simple as that, I guess I'm just quite boring. But a pleasure to play Daniel on a fine late Oct afternoon in Vicky Park with the sweet small of ganja never too far away..."  -- Stephen

Reveal CommentShuaib Variava bt Edward Morgan (Oct 16) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Close match played over 2 days at 2 different venues. Ed started off with a bang and was the far more consistent player. The 2nd set started in a similar manner and Ed raced to a 3-1 lead. Nothing was going right for me and I was faced with prospect of losing the 2nd set miserably. Something had to change and the only thing I could think of was to switch racquets to one I had been playing with more recently. This seemed to do the trick, my errors stopped and I won 5 games in a row to close out the set 6-3 and level the match. We then ran out of time and played the final set almost a week later at Carisbrooke. It was a tense final set, I used the same racquet and the home adv probably worked in my favour. Well played Ed, really enjoyed it."  -- Shuaib
Reveal CommentVinay Vaghela bt Shuaib Variava (Oct 15) 7-5, 6-2

Reveal CommentJay Ganatra bt Daniel Anton Radoi (Oct 9) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Daniel played consistently well throughout. It's so difficult to get a winner through his athletic defence. Long interesting rallies with both of us trying to find a weakness to penetrate in. A mixture of net and baseline points. Great match and amazing resilience on both sides. "  -- Jay

Reveal CommentDarryl Clarke bt Shuaib Variava (Oct 6) 7-5, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was the first match we have played against each other so both of us didn’t know what to expect. The match started off with both of us Failing to hold serve until we loosened up and warmed up. Both of us were really going for our shots so there was some great winners and a really enjoyable long long match. We had to move courts twice. Good luck mate, some great winners today hope to play you again soon."  -- Darryl
Reveal CommentJay Ganatra bt Shuaib Variava (Oct 2) 6-4, 6-2

Reveal CommentStephen Smith bt Simon May (Oct 2) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Simon can play tennis, & would no doubt be in agreement is a better player than me. But somehow I managed to edge the first set 6-4, and the 2nd set saw Simon go for his shots more. My defensive style managed to get me over the line for the win. Thanks for coming over to Ashby mate."  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "This round has been the most competitive I have played in, every match has been tough and this was another 3 hr, 3 set battle. It was much closer than the score suggests, most of the games went to deuce. Ed has fantastic defensive skill and movement, it was so difficult to hit a winner as he just seemed to get everything back! Our contrasting style definitely made for an interesting match. Look forward to playing again soon. "  -- Lin
Reveal CommentEdward Morgan bt Daniel Anton Radoi (Sep 27) 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Well played Daniel! You are literally like playing a brick wall and I feel quite fortunate to have scraped a 2-0 victory having been deservedly down 0-3 in both sets. There were a couple of games that lasted what seemed like forever, doing deuce, advantage, deuce for eternity. Your fitness level was top notch and you have good confidence in at the net, two attributes I would gladly borrow from you. Well played and I am sure the wins will start to come your way soon. I was very lucky tonight. See you soon for a friendly ?"  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "Great long match with lin late at night down at Loughborough the match went back and forth from being epic rallies with winners to mistakes from both but some long rallies with some nice finishes. Think my serve edged me the win today but it could of gone either way good luck for the rest of your matches mate "  -- Darryl

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Simon on a beautiful day. Some amazing rallies and I don't know how Simon managed to get to some of those points! Some real athleticism there! The electrolytes helped me out quite a bit and some amazing tennis. Really enjoyed it!! "  -- Jay
Reveal CommentStephen Smith bt Shuaib Variava (Sep 25) 7-6 (7-4), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Turns out Shuaib have played before, I'd forgotten. But it wasn't long before his style of play came flooding back to me. He has quite an aggressive style of play, going for the winner alot of the time. My style is somewhat less expansive, perhaps best described as dogged. The first set saw these contrasting styles go toe to toe, & the tie break was inevitable.....somehow I just edged it. Following a court move, the 2nd set went a little more the way of the 'dogged' style. But perhaps because Shuaib had another match straight after that he was conserving energy for..? Tough 2 hour+ match."  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentDarryl Clarke bt Vinay Vaghela (Sep 24) 6-3, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "It was our second match against each other and it’s always fast flowing tennis with not much breaks which is the best way. the first set I came out firing lots of angles and my serves were on fire as Vinay said. The second set I thought Vinay had it as he hit lots of winners and great shots but I fought back to win on the tiebreak. Always nice to play with you mate played in good spirits and both players going for shots good luck in your future matches mate look forward to playing against you soon."  -- Darryl
Reveal CommentSimon May bt Edward Morgan (Sep 21) 6-2, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a cracking march against Ed at Oadby which ebbed and flowed throughout with each of us having the momentum at times. I got ahead early in the first set as everything seemed to go well for me. The second set started in a similar way but then Ed managed to gain the momentum as he just wasn't making any mistakes. In the third set I went 3-0 up before Ed mounted a superb comeback to go 4-3 up. From there I dug I deep and managed to turn the match back in my favour and win overall. A really enjoyable match thanks Ed"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentShuaib Variava bt Daniel Anton Radoi (Sep 20) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great game against Daniel on the clay at Carisbrooke. The result was a lot closer than when we played in the last round. The clay courts really suit Daniel 's style of play which was evident in how close the score was. Daniel gets everything back no matter which part of the court you put the ball in and even more so on clay. I was expecting lots of long rallies against Daniel and I got even more than I bargained for, a few of which were 20 shots or more! Really enjoyed the game and glad to get some points on the board. Daniel is a top guy and has great sportsmanship. Look forward to playing again soon. Good luck in your remaining matches."  -- Shuaib
Reveal CommentSimon May bt Darryl Clarke (Sep 18) 6-3, 7-5

Reveal CommentSimon May bt Lin Chen (Sep 17) 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Another fantastic match between us. The first two sets were far closer than the scores suggest as we were pretty equal throughout. In the deciding set we both arguably played our best tennis, despite being very tired. I broke to go go 5-3 up but Chen then threw everything at the next two games. I managed to win a very close tie break and 2 points is about all that could seperate us today. Looking forward to playing again. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentEdward Morgan bt Jay Ganatra (Sep 17) 7-5, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "We had a long and tiring match today. Jay played the better Tennis throughout and he was really unluck not go win the first set. He stormed to a 5-2 lead, but I managed to claw it back and got the set after a nervy few last points. Jay then took the second easily, and deservedly so. The third, we were neck and neck all the way through to 4-4, but after lots of tiring points, I managed to get the win, 6-4, to take the 3rd and final set. Jay was encouraging throughout, which was really good of him (cheers buddy). Good luck with the rest of your matches and hopefully we can have a friendly match soon ?"  -- Edward
Reveal CommentSimon May bt Shuaib Variava (Sep 14) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Really good match with Shuaib. In the first set most games were broken, despite the fact we were both serving pretty well. At 4-4 I managed to edge the next 2 games to take the first set. We were both holding serve a lot better in the second set. I got an early break and managed to hold on until the end. Shuaib fought really well, including coming back from 3 match points down at 5-3 to make me serve it out. Looking forward to playing again soon."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentDarryl Clarke bt Edward Morgan (Sep 14) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Darryl played a near perfect first set and hardly put a foot wrong. His serves were on fire, his forehand winners were unretrievable and as he said himself, he had really good rhythm. Second set, I had to do something different to stand a chance. I tried to be committed to everything and focused on my strengths. It worked.. I got to 5-0 up and had 5 or 6 set points. The only issue was, Darryl wasn't playing badly, nor was he losing his cool. He saved all the set points and got the game. Then the next, and the next etc. When he went 6-5 up, I was pretty much gone. I tried to reset, but he just wasn't giving anything away. He held his nerve and served the set out for a 2-0 win. Hats off to you Darryl, you schooled me today. Respect!"  -- Edward
Reveal CommentStephen Smith bt Edward Morgan (Sep 13) 6-2, 3-6, [13-11]

Player Comments:

  • "Blimey spiders.....long tough match. Ed gets absolutely everything back, and I mean everything. Not the most technically gifted player (but then again...nor am I) but what he does is very effective, rarely going long, wide or into the net. Every point was hard earned. After sharing a set each, the Tie-Break could have gone either way....somehow I edged it. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentLin Chen bt Shuaib Variava (Sep 12) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough match against Shuaib. It was extremely close in the first set, we were neck to neck through out as we constantly broke each other's serves, I held my serve at the crucial moment to make it 6-5 then Shuaib had a nightmare service game and hit four double faults in a row! I started the second set better and quickly raced to a 4-1 lead, Shuaib then fought back strongly but I managed to hold on and grind out the win. Look forward to a friendly soon. "  -- Lin

Player Comments:

  • "We organised the match on the same day during casual conversation. Lin had a cancelled match and therefore we were both free that evening and so we played, but little did either of us realise what a mammoth battle this would be. We were both so evenly matched that the score could easily have gone either way. The hardest most exhausting match either of us have had in our lifetime. Each point was like a fnal of a grand slam! It took 4.5 hrs of almost continuous play with mininal breaks to reach a conclusion! We were both bathed in sweat at the end and our legs so sore that it took a week to walk properly again, but it was so worth it. Simply Amazing!!"  -- Jay

And even though Darryl went 3-1 up in the 2nd set, somehow I managed to hang onto his coat tails and edge it out for the win. Played in good spirit. Who knows, he may get his own back when Villa visit the King Power this Sat 10th...!? UTV."  -- Stephen

  • "Third time lucky for me as I got my first win against Tim. I expected a tough match and that’s what I got, only Tim made a few more unforced errors than last time. He was coming back well in the second set but I got myself enough of a buffer to see it out. Thanks for sorting the game Tim see you on the next one!"  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really close match played in perfect conditions. It was my first time on clay so a bit iffy at first but got into it and really enjoyed this surface. I was just a little more consistent on the day and managed to close at after three really tight sets. Thanks Michal and hope to play again soon"  -- Jo

Reveal CommentPaul Morris bt Mayur Vadher (Oct 12) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good to see Mayur again and get to play him for a third time. We were lucky with a break in the weather of what was otherwise started out as drizzly to overcast evening. Played on the savanna and I took advantage of the slick court with my slice serve and held my service games. Mayur played well off the first serve and once into the rally."  -- Paul

Reveal CommentPaul Morris bt Jo Sohn-Rethel (Oct 1) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good to meet Jo and get the match played at a very bright Victoria park. I think bringing my hat and sunglasses gave me the crucial advantage as it was impossible to see from the demontfort hall end. I was a bit more consistent and got the win. Although Jo was up in the friendly 3rd set. Good luck with the rest of your matches!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Michal Nerc (Sep 29) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "The first set Michael was getting into his swing, but I was able to capitalise on his slow start and get some early breaks, eventually winning it 6-1. The second was more competive as we both held serve in the first four games (2-2), but then I got a crucial hold and break of serve to lead 4-2. Michael came back well, breaking back and the holding serve to make it 4-4. After more tough games we were 5-5. Finally I held serve to have a 6-5 advantage and the chance to serve for the set. In that closing game I had a 40-30 lead and match point. This went in my favour , leading to a 7-5 set win. Well played Michael and good luck with the other matches."  -- Tim
Matthew Kelly bt Mayur Vadher (Sep 28) 6-3, 7-5
Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Jo Sohn-Rethel (Sep 26) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Jo got off to a good start breaking me and holding serve. then he was 0-40 up in the third game. This seemed a crucial game as I came back to deuce and eventually won it to make the score 1-2. Finally I broke back and it was quite even till I got a second break and eventually won the set 6-4. The second set also had some crucial games , similar to that third game, yet I managed a couple of breaks to get 4-0 up, Jo came back strongly to make it 4-3 and if the momentum hadn't swung back in the the next game, Jo may have gone on to win that set. Crucially I broke Jo to give myself a chance to serve for the match. The last game went to several deuces, but eventually led to me winning 6-3. Well played Jo. Good luck with the rest of the games."  -- Tim

Reveal CommentTim Ettrick bt Mayur Vadher (Sep 20) 4-6, 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great match in good conditions. In set one Mayur played to his strengths of playing some strong top spins and although I was a break up at one point, quickly that was reversed and Mayur approached the last game needing to break me, which he did succesfully. The second set had a moment when I changed from defensive tactics to attacking ones and I got a decisive break of serve, finally winning the set by holding my serve. The third set was a tighter set than it looked and began with us at 1-1 and looking like another 50 minute set, but with both of us tiring after more than two hours of tennis I managed to get a succession of breaks to give me a 5-1 lead. The final game was topsy turvey but ended with me taking the match. Well played Mayur."  -- Tim

Reveal CommentMayur Vadher bt Jo Sohn-Rethel (Sep 18) 7-6 (7-5), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "The match was played at Victoria Park on a Sunday morning with decent playing conditions. In other words there wasn’t any rain for the duration of proceedings. I chose to serve first after my opponent guessed wrong for the coin toss. This was a return match from a previous round where I was defeated in three fun sets. This time around I got my loss back and to do it in straight sets was a great feeling. With victory I broke a two-match losing streak. The match was around two hours so it was not an easy ask to get over the finish line but I am very grateful to get the win. Jo had a good showing especially in set 1 when he was 6-5 ahead and serving for the set but I tried my best and it worked out well for me. Good luck Jo for future matches!"  -- Mayur
