  • "Cheers Joe. Great to meet you and have an enjoyable game, with the rain stopping for us too. Cheers mate. "  -- Dan
Reveal CommentStephen Ryde bt Dan Howl (Sep 9) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Dan and get the match played especially as we had to come back in the afternoon to finish it off. Conditions were glorious early morning but almost as unbearable as the US open in the afternoon. We had plenty of long rallies in the first set and fortunately towards the end a few errors afforded me the set. The 2nd set started the same until we had to stop due to netball practice. We resumed later on and Dan ramped up his serves and attacking play to great effect. I held on to force a tiebreak and managed to open up a lead to win. Enjoyed the tousle very much Dan and wish you well for the rest of your matches. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentASHLEY GARY SPRUCE bt Levi Salt (Sep 6) 4-6, 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another really warm evening which typically went to 3 sets. Fairly even first set which Levi deservedly won in the latter stages. Sets two and three improved for me as the error count was much lower. Late finish under the lights ... enjoyed the contest with many quality rallies."  -- ASHLEY GARY
Reveal CommentASHLEY GARY SPRUCE bt Joe Humphries (Sep 5) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Match played in very warm temperatures which probably reduced the rally duration from us both. Many breaks of serve in the first set with neither of us finding a serving rhythm. Second set was again affected by the heat. Neither of us were at our best. "  -- ASHLEY GARY
Reveal CommentDavid Rule bt Joe Humphries (Sep 2) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really fun morning with Joe! We had the unique challenge of playing to a dramatic soundtrack from the proms in the park in the second set, but we still managed to compose some good rallies with Joe orchestrating some lovely drop shots. I've run out of puns now. Cheers Joe!"  -- David
Reveal CommentStephen Ryde bt Joe Humphries (Sep 1) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was great to meet Joe and we played under pleasant but humid conditions. The first set was close with me playing catch up for the most part. Joe played with lots of variety and spin and caught me out quite a few times. Fortunately I took advantage of a few errors to close out the set. In the second I took an early lead although there were signs of a comeback I managed to maintain my lead to finish off the match. Well done Joe on that tricky first set and an overall enjoyable match. Good luck in the rest of your matches. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentDavid Rule bt Dan Howl (Sep 1) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great to see Dan again and an enjoyable match on a muggy evening. Relieved it wasn't as long as our marathon last time, probably helped by a bit of rust on Dan's part but some good rallies nonetheless. Cheers Dan, look forward to playing again soon!"  -- David
Reveal CommentStephen Ryde bt ASHLEY GARY SPRUCE (Aug 29) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet Gary and under pleasant conditions we had a good match. The first set was tight and strangely no one could hold their serve. Gary played an array of nice shots in fine style and I had to hold my serve to finish the set. I managed to build up a lead in the second although Gary launched a comeback but thankfully I managed to swing the momentum again to seal the win. Good to get it played early on and looking forward to the next one. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentDavid Rule bt ASHLEY GARY SPRUCE (Aug 28) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Very fortunate to catch Gary on a rare off day as I know how good he usually is. There were enjoyable rallies and quick hands in some entertaining net points. Looking forward to our usual battle again soon!"  -- David
Reveal CommentOliver Spillett bt ASHLEY GARY SPRUCE (Aug 26) 3-6, 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great game again Gary which was very up and down in terms of momentum. Some really good winners from you but also more errors than usual which probably was the difference today. Set one you were pressing me deeper and deeper and I couldn't get on top of your forehand. I was expecting more of the same in the second but thankfully for me your level dropped and we won't mention the score in that one again! Third set had me serving for the match after you rallied from 4-1 down to bring it back to 5-4. Pretty relieved to have come through it as when you were on your game you were the better player today. Good to play again mate and see you next time! I'm looking forward to that beer tomorrow on the beach! "  -- Oliver
Reveal CommentStephen Ryde bt Levi Salt (Aug 25) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great to see Levi again and we were lucky to get the match in as some forecasts looked ominous. The first set started off with a good tousle then I managed to finish it off. Levi upped the ante in the 2nd and went into a commanding 5-3 lead, reminiscent of our previous match. Fortunately I managed increased my focus and clawed my way back to seal the match. We had some great lung busting rallies along the way and it took my best tennis to get over the line. Fortunately the flow of the points were in my favour at the right time. I shall look forward to our next encounter with relish. Good luck in the meantime Levi. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentOliver Spillett bt Stephen Ryde (Aug 24) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely early morning match with you again Steve with some really good tennis from both of us. I raced into a 5-1 lead before our traditional comeback nearly happened again when you pulled it back to 5-4 and were pressing me all the way. Thankfully I held on and then started brightly again in the second. Felt like a proper match and I'm always wary of momentum shifting with you so had to stay focused! Great game mate and looking forward to the next one already. "  -- Oliver
Reveal CommentOliver Spillett bt Levi Salt (Aug 22) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very good match tonight. It was all going great for me at 5-0 in the first, cruising you might say. Not for long. You pulled a few games back to avoid the bagel and then had me on the ropes all the way through the second, taking that one deservedly, 6-4. The third had a bit of everything with some good play, a couple of really good lobs from you and some terrible net play from both of us. We also had a Levi does John McEnroe impression which is a Beacon Park highlight for 2023. Third set went to the wire as well at 6-4. Shame it had to end with a smash into the net from you but I think 5.2 miles on the gps and 2.5 hours was enough! Great game as always mate, closest one yet tonight. "  -- Oliver
Reveal CommentDavid Rule bt Levi Salt (Aug 19) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Exhausting match! Levi had his trademark fast start, punishing me with some cross court passing shots and forcing me into a few errors on the volleys. The second set was very competitive despite both of us tiring towards the end. Enjoyable game, thanks Levi"  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "What a game! It was so closely matched and it could have gone either way. Lots of long rallies and lots of dueces. James was dominant in the first set winning it comfortably and was up 5-2 in the second set. Somehow I dug deep and managed to pull it back to a tie break which went my way, taking us into the start of a 3rd set after a gruelling 2 hours. Thankfully the last set ended quicker! Really looking forward to a rematch soon. "  -- Dean
Reveal CommentDavid Brown bt Ian. Mannaring (Sep 3) 6-3 Ian. Mannaring Retired

Player Comments:

  • "A shame that Ian was unfortunately carrying an injury which hampered his movement in the set we played before having to retire, he still made me work for it though! Hope you get it rested up and can play again soon."  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Brown bt Simon Buttery (Sep 2) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Really draining match this one, the heat taking its toll on both of us and the sun being particularly tricky at one end. Not many holds of serve for either of us through the match, and I had to fend off a fightback from Simon coming back from 5-3 in the second set before scraping over the line. I'm certainly not going to miss chasing after all of those drop shots! "  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Brown bt Shaun Graham (Sep 2) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great to have Shaun back in the league again after a couple of years off. I definitely benefitted from some rust on his part in that first set, second set he was starting to find his groove and I'm sure he will take that into the next matches. Cheers for the game mate!"  -- David
Reveal CommentDean Evans bt Shaun Graham (Sep 1) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Cheers for the game Shaun. It was a closer match than the score suggests with some long rallies. Shaun has a strong forehand and a fast first serve which caught me out a few times. Looking forward to a rematch soon!"  -- Dean

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to play James again after a long time. Struggled in the first set to deal with some of James's forehands and tricky low slices but just about managed to serve it out. Second set my serve was firing a bit more (at the non-sunny end!) which was able to see me through but was a well contested match."  -- David

I managed to get ahead in the second set and was 5-2 up, though as Sutty said the old soldier in him came out and he made it 5-4 despite him visibly struggling. Player Comments:

  • "We organised this game couple of weeks ago but didn’t think we will encounter the US Open weather conditions. It was very HOT!!! Probably too hot for a British and a French from Normandie… Richard had a great start, his serves were very strong and very fast. I didn’t score any points in the first game. Very much like the French against the all Blacks in Rugby last night at the start of their game. I was really worried. Unfortunately for Richard but luckily for me, the heat reduced the accuracy and the power of his serves. Score doesn’t reflect the close games which could have gone either way. Hope we will play again in a normal “British” conditions. Thanks for playing today. Matt "  -- Matthieu
