"Thank for organising the league-  it's been fantastic!!! Excited to get into the next round,"

Eleanor Ehlen

"Being in the league has definitely improved my game. When I started, I was just a base line player. I never felt comfortable near the net but the Local Tennis League really does give you a great opportunity to play against players of all different styles."

Tony Puddifer

Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Philip Bowers (Jul 31) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "2nd match playing with a glute injury so I am still playing baseline & trying to play the ball deep enough to stop my opponent moving me around. I’ve ordered the McDavid compression shorts but today I was using the Shapewear shorts women use to look thin! Strange playing singles from the back of the court but I did manage to make a few volleys & smashes. It was a hard fought match with a lot of long rallies. The first two games lasted 15 minutes. Philip was playing the better tennis, hitting through the ball more than me, and he has an excellent inside out fh and down the line bh. I won mainly on his unforced errors. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Philip Bowers (Jul 28) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "First time meeting Phil, hes a friendly fella and we had a very enjoyable match. the first set was close all the way through, i think we were both playing well, the rallies were good and most of the points seemed to be coming from good shots as opposed to bad shots. Phils strengths I'd say are a powerful first serve and strong dh backhand. in the second set i think his first serve percentage dropped off quite a bit and I was getting into all his service games, but it still felt like a competitive set. thanks for the game Phil, look forward to playing again soon. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentTatsuo Okura bt Neil Murphy (Jul 28) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was an exciting game as many A class shots made by Neil. I’d like to hit with him again. This is my last match of the season. It was my first time to join this local tennis and I lost one match early on, but other than that I am satisfied with the good quality of tennis and enjoyed fair play with group’s members."  -- Tatsuo
Reveal CommentTatsuo Okura bt Philip Bowers (Jul 26) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to play Philip and want to hit again. His shot control and technique were so impressive."  -- Tatsuo
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Neil Murphy (Jul 20) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "First time playing Neil, hes a nice fella and was very sporting throughout. Hes got a lot of good shots and I lost count of the number of times he hit the ball a few inches out with strikes that were clean winners otherwise. He was landing more and more in as we went on and I was glad to edge the second set as I wasnt fancying my chances if we went to a third. If i played Neil when he was in top form I, to use football parlance, dont think I'd get a kick, so it was good for me that hes still a bit rusty. Thanks Neil for an enjoyable match."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentGraham Hughes bt Philip Bowers (Jul 19) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Phil played some really good shots but I managed to keep more shots in play so won more games. Phil had not played much recently so watch out when he gets his eye in."  -- Graham
Reveal CommentTatsuo Okura bt Alistair Corbelli (Jul 16) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to play with Alister and promised play again near future." -- Tatsuo
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Alistair Corbelli (Jul 14) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "first time meeting alistair, hes a great lad and our match was played in a good spirit throughout. the scoreline is no way indicative of the match and there was a lot of deuce games, including the 2nd game of the match which Alistair told me lasted 16 minutes :) hes got a good dh backhand and can really crush a short ball, off both wings, but i had an edge on serve and consistency of shots, and probably most importantly a lot more league matches under my belt. Alistair will definitely improve the more he plays in the leagues and i look forward to playing him again. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentGraham Hughes bt Neil Murphy (Jul 8) 6-3, 6-0

Reveal CommentTatsuo Okura bt Graham Hughes (Jul 5) 6-1, 6-0

  • "It was a tough match, typical example of how the score is not what the match is about. I had luck in the deuce game and many net in points. Graham is complete player and deserves respect."  -- Tatsuo

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable, close and long game."  -- Graham
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Alistair Corbelli (Jun 21) 6-1, 5-7, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Excellent tough close game, with Alistair making the best shots, he has a superb dh back hand, and the fitness to get to every ball. We neutralised each other in the second set, his lobs and passing shots keeping me at the back, and we had several baseline rallies lasting several minutes. We both slow balled or moon balled the last set. Haven’t done that for many years."  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Tatsuo Okura (Jun 20) 6-2, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Rob Slade v Tatsuo (TATsoo) Okura This was (as Tony Puddifer warned me) an excellent close tough match lasting two hours in the oven that is the DL Speke aircraft hangar. Battle of the moonballers! As usual I was 2nd best at the base line, T’s shots too varied deep weighty and accurate for me, but I made enough volleys and smashes to take the first set 6-2. T countered and went 5-4 up in the 2nd set by a lethal mixture of passing shots and immaculate lobs (often after first dragging me into the net with an underarm 2nd serve -clever play) I countered by playing more and deeper shots from the baseline mixed with a few crucial volleys & smashes to level at 6-6 and take the tie break 7-2 "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentTatsuo Okura bt Paul Scallion (Jun 18) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Both of us are first match this season and enjoyed game."  -- Tatsuo
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Neil Murphy (Jun 18) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Hoping to get back to Group 1 at the first attempt, after my first ever relegation and a narrow one coz I lost to Danny & Michael in three sets, and they are both many times winners of Group 1 But there are a lot of good players in Group 2, especially Neil, a player good enough to win. Group 1. He’s a former junior Palmerston starlet who’s won big matches playing with Antony Hardman. So a win for me against him yesterday a miracle and one of my best ever results. I won by defensive play, the occasional point at the net, & Neil being a bit rusty. Beware this guy after he’s played a few matches, beware anyway of his backhand, spin serve, & drop shots. Next up on Sunday, Tatsuo Okura (TATsoo oKOYra?) who I’ve heard is also v good "  -- Rob

Player Comments:

  • "Playing with Marian is always tough and enjoyable. I could manage the game today but Marian made more winners than I did (he made 21 winners, I did 16). His backhand ground stroke was much stronger than a year ago and his top spin short cross shot was uncatchable. A good point for me was maybe 71% of 1st serve in (Marian was 56%). A lot to learn from him and I look forward to playing with him again soon. "  -- Atsushi

  • "Moulay has a strong game with a lot of consistency in his shots together with power and placement. I made a lot of unforced errors today, unfortunately not many winners... some good rallies towards end of 2nd set!!! Good luck in your future matches!!"  -- Benjamin
  • "Good we managed to fit it in between rain showers and football matches." -- Moulay
Reveal CommentTony Jones bt Corina Doran (Jul 1) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Corina and I played in hot sunshine - which neither of us liked much - keeping each other moving around just to make it worse. The score doesn't really reflect Corina's effort and the close games we played, particularly in the first set, where they went reached love all on a few occasions. Good match with a great knockabout with Corina practising her serve to good effect meaning that her next match opponent will have a tougher time."  -- Tony
Reveal CommentDAX BALE bt Corina Doran (Jun 30) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet Dax today. He has lots of variation in shots, and his serves are often fast and accurate, so a very difficult opponent to play all round. I played very badly in the second set, as I lost focus and energy so the errors crept in."  -- Corina
Reveal CommentRodrigo De Marco bt Benjamin Wong (Jun 27) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to play Rodrigo today. Rodrigo has a lot of power and placement in his serve and shots and we had some good rallies, although not many deuces! Shame i could not maintain my standard of the one rally that we had in the first game!!! My game was full of errors today!!! Good luck for your remaining matches Rodrigo!!"  -- Benjamin
Reveal CommentCorina Doran bt Benjamin Wong (Jun 21) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Ben this evening. I had a slow start losing the first three games. I managed to claw it back, and all of a sudden it was 5-5. I managed to take the first set, and then the second with a little less difficulty. Ben is able to create some really difficult angles for his opponent, and he has loads of great shots which I struggle to return. We also had loads of rallies, however, which made the game really fun to play. A well spent two hours :)"-- Corina
