Jonathan Scally bt Harry Southgate (Sep 18) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentMichael Petalas bt Rob Slade (Sep 14) 4-1, 4-2

Player Comments:

  • "Michael’s a class player. In about ten meetings I won once when he was rusty and another when I ran about 20 miles for three hours playing purely defensive baseline tennis. In this match I had decided to hit every ball with pace and I only hit about two in court. The match was over in about 15 minutes. Knowing it was a suicide mission I should have played long sets. I would still have lost badly but at least I could have practiced more shots. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Harry Southgate (Sep 12) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I was badly crushed by James and Michael in my first two matches and I was expecting more of the same again Harry because I know he took a set off James. Partly self inflicted massacres because I’m trying to change my game by hitting the ball with pace every shot using my feet and body instead of just flapping at the ball with my arms. Against Michael and James I must have hit a 100 balls or so in the net or wildly off the court. Luckily for me they started going in against Harry. Is that all it takes, two matches to change one’s game? "  -- Rob

Reveal CommentGraham Hughes bt Mark Dryden (Aug 24) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Mark is a much better player than the score dictates. He was carrying an injury and has not played for a while so beware when you play him."  -- Graham
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Joel Carter (Aug 23) 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Joel, top lad and we had a very friendly but very competitive match. He told me this was his first match in the leagues and that was probably the only difference in the end - me having a bit more match experience. A lot of the rallies were long and intense and most of the games were deuce games, all the way through there was nothing between us in the play. Joel came to the net a lot and hit some unbeleivable backhand volleys off the floor when I was convinced I'd hit a winning passing shot. He'll definitely be a tough opponent for most after he gets some more matches under his belt. Thanks for sorting the court Joel and look forward to playing again soon."  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "It was one of toughest matches in my life. Lots of rallies and deuces. As the tiebreak score at the 1st set suggests, the match has been very close from the start to the end. If I could not manage the tiebreak, I don't think I could manage the match. I look forward to playing with Alistair again. Thanks."  -- Atsushi
Reveal CommentSteven Segerberg bt James Matheson (Oct 8) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great first encounter with James. Some of our rallies were 20,30 shots plus in what was a close contest. 6-1 in the first set was the hardest 6-1 I've ever played. The difference was me winning the key points. 4-0 up and 30-0 up James fought back to get it to 4-4 in the second. I managed to them hold my serve and break James to win 6-4. A great match. Cheers"  -- Steven

Reveal CommentTony Puddifer bt James Matheson (Sep 4) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "played James a few times now, never look forward to playing him, really nice guy but I find James so difficult to play against, slow pace with so much top spin, really good top spin lob that puts you on the back fence trying to return them, its difficult to lob him because he's tall and he's pretty quick, so gets to drop shots, after the first set i wanted to go home, god i hate playing against him"  -- Tony

Reveal CommentAlistair Corbelli bt Philip Bowers (Sep 1) 6-3, 3-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Second time playing Philip, another great game of tennis that could have gone either way. The first 5/6 games in the first set were very slow as both of us were still half asleep! At 3-3 I made an important service hold after facing break points before breaking Philip and serving out a very sluggish first set. In the second set Philip found his first serve and hit through me with his powerful ground-stokes and raced into a 5-1 lead. I managed to break back and hold serve before Philip held to love and took the second set. The third set was the opposite to the second, Philip struggled to find a first serve and I took advantage in the first game breaking to love and that game me the momentum going into the latter stages of the match. "  -- Alistair
Reveal CommentAleksandras Kadilinas bt James Matheson (Aug 30) 7-6 (7-4), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to meet James who is an experienced and well rounded player. In the first set, at 5-6, he had 3 match points, but I managed to come back and win the set through a tie break. The second was closer than the scoreline suggests, with plenty of deuce points played. I hope to play James again soon!"  -- Aleksandras

Reveal CommentAlistair Corbelli bt James Matheson (Aug 27) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Always a highly competitive game when me and James meet and this was the most physically demanding game I have played for a long time in 20 degrees heat! The first set started with a couple of breaks a piece until james found a bit of rhythm on serve and took a 4-2 lead making the next game a must win for me. At 5-5 I managed to get the decisive break and hold serve to take the opening set. The second set was the opposite to the first with me taking a 4-2 lead before james winning 3 games on the bounce to make it 5-4 to him. In the next service game I had to save a set point before holding for 5-5 before breaking in the 11th game and serving for the match where I saved 2 break back points which showed there was only a couple of points in it"  -- Alistair

Melanie has good court coverage and great angled returns on her shots and a consistent serve. I was keeping in the rallies and hitting everything deep, forcing the errors. Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentBenjamin Wong bt Thomas Jeffrey (Sep 10) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Thomas again! 1st set Thomas race to a 2 - 0 lead but I quickly found my rhythm with serve and deep topspin strokes. Thomas has a lot of power in his strokes but if he keeps his 1st serves in, unforced errors down, he'd be pretty difficult to beat. Caught me a few times with his cross court and down the line shots and unpredictable bounces!! 2nd set I had a 2 - 0 lead before Thomas came fighting back again. I was denied match point 3 times in a tight final deuce game!! Luckily, we finished before it went dark!!! "  -- Benjamin

Quite a few games went to deuce!!! 2nd set, we broke each other serves until 3 - 3, and then Alistair ran away with the set!!! A great opening match to this round!!!"  -- Benjamin

Reveal CommentGraham Hughes & Rob Slade bt Peter Hardy & Steven Segerberg (Oct 13) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Lots of close games in this match. We won the first set more from their errors but lots of good tennis in the second set, both Ste and Pete hitting excellent outright winners down the line, down the centre of the court or at our feet. Our usual tactic of switching sides or playing Australian had no effect because they could both play just as well down the lines. We both had to raise our game, run more, make less mistakes and get more volleys and smashes to win this match. Another good match, and beers/talk after. David Lloyd had run out of draft Moretti and Heineken, but still plenty of bottled beer. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentGraham Hughes & Rob Slade bt PHILIP SEE & Jonathan Kearney (Oct 12) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Phil & Jon went 4-2 up in the first set playing some excellent tennis, both of them hitting good angles, Jon playing good deep balls with pace and wrong footing us down the line several times & Phil playing some lethal fh and bh slices, and serving with pace to both tee and the corners. Lights were also a factor because my net game not so good under the lights of courts 5 & 6 at Mossley Hill. So we played more defensively and more long rallies which I think turned the game to our advantage (and a switch to better lighting on Court 4). Another good doubles match, beer and talk at the club after. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentGraham Hughes & Rob Slade bt Michael Petalas & Suneetha Kovvuri (Oct 4) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable game that was much closer than the score indicated. The rain had the courtesy to hold off but the wet ground allowed any shots with spin to be extremely effective. Rob and I really enjoyed meeting with and playing against Mike and Suneetha and thank you for the game."  -- Graham

Player Comments:

  • "Played the short format which was new to me but nice to get the game played. Great experience to face Tarquin’s serve! Thanks for the game."  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentGraham Hughes & Rob Slade bt Atsushi Uchida & Tony Puddifer (Sep 29) 5-7, 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "What a difference changing sides of the courts made here. We (Graham & Rob) played on our usual backhand sides in the first set and couldn’t deal with the powerful serve of Tony and the slow high bouncing serve of Uchida (NB he likes to be addressed by his surname). Also they are both good at playing the ball wide in rallies so again our backhands not good enough plus good deep balls from the baseline from Tony caused short or weak balls from us, easily picked of by Uchida. So in the sets we won, we hit better returns and rallied better on the wide shots (high balls from Uchida, low balls with pace from Tony), plus we played more at the net, getting more volleys and smashes. Excellent match, many close games and rallies. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentAtsushi Uchida & Tony Puddifer bt Aretas Jasiunas & Aleksandras Kadilinas (Sep 28) 6-3, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

Player Comments:

  • "A great encounter against our friends from the club. We all know each other’s games well so this was always going to be tight. Some good rallies and winners all round. The momentum seemed to be with our opponents in the deciding set but we dug in for the win. I’m sure we’ll have many close matches ahead of us!"  -- Jonathan

Player Comments:

  • "Quiite an incredible doubles match under the lights at Mossley Hill against Arietas and Aleksandras. 2-0 down in the first we got it back to 2-2 and from that moment on it was just down to fine margins for the rest of the match. 5-4 down the boys then broke our serve to take the first set. The second set was relentless again with most games going to deuce. 6-5 down we held our serve this time to take the set to a tiebreak which we won 7-1. We hoped this was a turning point to swing the match our way. We were now winning key game points and got a 5-2 lead but as always the hardest game to win was the final one. The boys then won 4 on the spin to take a 6-5 lead. We then broke their serve to take the match to a tiebreak which we took 7-5"  -- Steven

We came back from 4-1 down in the first to nearly steal it, then nearly threw away a 5-0 lead in the second to survive a couple of match points! We just had to serve out the third set but threw it away. Disappointed but a really close match. Well done Tim and Damon."  -- Jonathan

Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana & David Britzman bt Damon Daniels & James Calrow (Oct 9) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Very close game between us that could have gone either way. Damon and James played really well at the start of the first set and raced into a 5-2 lead thanks to some good volleys at the net from Damon and good baseline shots by James. They had 2 set points at 5-2 which we managed to save with some good defensive play and then win the game after several deuces. That game seemed to swing the match with us winning 8 games in a row to win the set 7-5 and go into a 3-0 lead in the second. Kalpi was particularly good, getting forward more and hitting a lot of good volleys from the net. Damon and James got back into the set by playing more aggressively but we did just enough to get over the line!!"  -- David
Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana & David Britzman bt Patrick Conroy & Tim Walsh (Oct 6) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good to meet Patrick and Tim and get our game in. Both Patrick and Tim had slight injuries which meant they weren't able to play at their fullest, but they still managed to pull off some great shots and force us onto the defensive often. The first set was closer than it seemed with all players hitting some good rallying shots from the back of the court and able to finish points off at the net when they came in. A few unforced errors at important times and some good points from us managed to win the set 6-0. The second set was looking like it might be the same score but Patrick and Tim came back from 4-0 down to get back into the set at 5-2. They took the next game to deuce but fortunately a couple of good serves managed to win the match!"  -- Kalpani
Reveal CommentDamon Daniels & James Calrow bt Stephanie Carter & Joanne Mcwaters (Sep 27) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great match tonight for myself and James, really enjoyed the tough encounter. Both players had really good ground shots, kept us running around under the lights at Mossley Hill into the evening! Marathon game at 3-2 in the second set which we managed to take, thankfully, I was starting to get that third set feeling at that point and don’t know if my body could take it! Thanks again for the game and best of luck in rest of matches "  -- Damon
Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana & David Britzman bt Stephanie Carter & Joanne Mcwaters (Sep 26) 4-6, 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was quite a tense a game with Joanne and Stephanie hitting great serves and shots past us. First set we really struggled with too many unforced errors and double faults. Second and third set we changed tactics and reduced our unforced errors but even so, its was not plain sailing. Stephanie has got some fantastic, fast serves and her second serves are the same speed as her first! She also hit some great backhand volleys that were winners! Jo has got some great defensive shots hitting it consistently crosscourt running for every ball and putting us on the backfoot. It was not an easy game, but a competitive and very enjoyable game! "  -- Kalpani

Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana & David Britzman bt Sriram Krishnan & Deepak Keshari (Sep 15) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was the first time playing doubles for all 4 of us! We came in not knowing what to do and it felt very strange having the doubles lines! Deepak and Sriram are great lads with great sportmanship! They both hit some great winners that went past us especially from Sriram who just started playing tennis! Sriram was very effective at the net and Deepak was very consistent putting the balls back on the court! As a pair they were quite tactical, cleverly varying the ball placement. The only thing that let them down were their unforced errors especially in the 2nd set as we started becoming more consistent with our shots after finally having gotten used to the court and the match! Thank you Deepak and Sriram for an enjoyable first doubles match!"  -- Kalpani
Reveal CommentDamon Daniels & James Calrow bt Patrick Conroy & Tim Walsh (Sep 6) 2-6, 6-1, 6-4

  • "Great match against Paddy and Tim this evening, a tough opening in the group!! Took us all a bit of time to warm up with some rusty shots in the first 5/6 games but after that it was a really good close match with lots of great rallies. Cheers for the game and best of luck in the rest of matches, look forward to playing again "  -- Damon
