"Just wanted to say a quick thank you for making this happen! We're now entering our second round and although it can sometimes prove difficult to orchestrate 4 people (instead of just 2) the tennis has been great fun. Thanks again,"

Tom Brown

"I'm really enjoying the spirit and ethos of this League. It's not about winning and scoring brownie points but meeting new friends who share the same passion for the Sport of Champions. It's the spirit of the game that shines through. Thank you both for organising a really engaging event for anyone who wants to get fit and enjoy the benefits tennis has to offer,"

Stephen Reynolds

"I have now completed all of my matches in the Manchester Parks local tennis league and it has been a very enjoyable undertaking. I've met many friendly faces who've all shared the same passion for the sport and it was a great opportunity to expand my tennis network of friends,"

J Cullen

Reveal CommentRob Slade bt MARK WHYTOCK (Jul 18) 6-1, 3-6, [10-7]

Player Comments:

  • "Mark beat group leader Eugenio so I’m expecting a tough game. Both baseline players who make zero unforced errors & who can easily lob or pass a net player. I won the 1st set with deep & pace shots to Mark’s b/h & getting to the net. But hard to keep up the pace in the boiling sun, & in the 2nd set Mark won most of the baseline rallies, many points from lobs & passing shots, & easily win the set 6-3 & went 2-0 up in the MTB. Who wins when so close is the one who most raises their game/energy, find most will/self belief. I did today but it was close. Mark fought back from 9-4 down to 9-7 & he only lost the final point after an excellent long battling rally. Near hottest sun scorching am of the year. Towels, water, cap, sunblock crucial"  -- Rob
Peter Simon bt MARK WHYTOCK (Jul 13) 6-4, 7-5
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Peter Simon (Jul 11) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Score 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 From the warm up I knew this game would be close. Peter played some excellent tennis, shots with pace, deep and angled, moving me all over the court From several approach shots I hit with pace deep to his forehand corner he hit outright winners, cross court tight angled passing shots into the service box. He was much the better baseline player so as usual I had to win most of my points at the net, but I did win a few from the back of the court, long rallies that had us both gasping for breath (first set indoors was over an hour). It was an excellent long very close hard fought match after which we had a beer and watched the Men’s Final on an excellent large high definition screen in the DL Cheadle lounge"  -- Rob

Player Comments:

  • "Excellent close tough match. As usual I was second best at the baseline, Laurence having by far the better forehand and serve, a lethal smash and a decent bh slice. I just about won enough points at the net because his passing shots and lobs were good as well. We were both steady so we had a few massive rallies leaving us both gasping for aid, but he was the steadier fitter and faster player. "  -- Rob

  • "What a close and competitive game over nearly 3 hours on a warm and increasingly sunny afternoon. It was great to meet Wright and play on the grass at the Northern. We were so evenly matched and several games went to multiple deuces. Wright had excellent consistency on his first serve and a really good all-round game. In the end we had to play a tie break in lieu of a third set and that was also as close as it comes. Honestly by that point I didn't care who won as I was cream crackered. I hope we play again once I have had a very long lie down!"  -- Stephen

Having said that, the longest of all was when I was serving for the match at 6-5 and Wright must have saved about ten match points before finally breaking to take it to a tiebreak. An enjoyable battle."  -- Ben

  • "What a match, 3 hours in the blistering midday heat. I started out pretty aggressively, getting some joy trying to end the rallies quickly with the inside in forehand down the line. Went 5-2 up but faltered a little, then saw it out 6-4. Second set followed a similar pattern, Owen's forehand started to misfire so I kept targeting it and found myself 5-2 up again. But then Owen really dug in, solid on both sides, mixing things up with the sliced backhand, deep topspin rally balls, the odd moonball and a few awesome drop shots. I stayed aggressive but the unforced errors crept it. Owen took the third set 7-5 much to my frustration. Third was a real battle, went to a tie break which I won 7-0. Hard luck Owen, proper group of death this one!"  -- Tom

  • "Played in the scorching heat at fletcher moss park! The shirts had to come off! One half of the court was in the pleasant shade from the nearby trees/ other half was like stepping in an oven with the hot sun beaming at whoever was unlucky to play on that side. The match consisted of massively long rally's, both going for consistency rather than hitting the risky winner shots. Owen executed some brilliant drop shots, always just clearing the net and no weakness's shown from his forearm vs backhand shots. Mistakes were eventually make from Owen in key points giving me the upper hand and closing the first set. 2nd set was similar but Owen made more mistakes + his attempts to run to the net was followed by my nicely timed lob shots. "  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentOwen Gearty bt Steve Hurdsfield (Jul 18) 6-2, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "In the already scorching 9:30am heat, Owen & Steve settled in for a 3 set marathon on the sunstroked courts of the Albert Bowling & Tennis Club. Coming back from weeks of isolation, Owen struck first with clinical net play gaining him the first set. In the second, however, Steve utilised his serve to great effect with multiple aces leaving his opponent flailing at clean air. With rallies going longer and longer, Hurdsfield eliminated errors from his game to win set 2 and break Owen in the opening game of the final set. From that point on, the match became incredibly tense with both players on the brink of exhaustion. Yet, after many long baseline rallies, Owen converted his 3rd match point to edge the final set and match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. "  -- Owen
Reveal CommentNana Osei bt Patrick Lambton (Jul 17) 7-6 (7-2), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Hard luck Paddy after winning 5 straight games from 5:1 down in the 1st set.... only to lose to tie break. Thanks for the match. I think I have played you more than anyone in this league. All the best. "  -- Nana
  • "Hot Stuff! Despite playing at 8 in the morning, it was still absolutely scorchio and Nana and I had a cracking match that ebbed and flowed. Difficult to keep up the hydration in that sort of heat but we both hit some pretty nice shots." -- Patrick
Reveal CommentTom Long bt Patrick Lambton (Jul 14) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Fun match with Tom. He hit some absolutely searing winners, pouncing on anything even vaguely resembling a short ball. His aggressive style got him a bit tight on a few occasions whilst he was serving to close out the first set, and gave me a number of break back points in the course of a long long deuce to get back into it. However, I was unable to capitalize on any of them and as such Tom took the first. He came out with renewed confidence in the second set and absolutely blasted me off the court. Really good to be involved in some good attacking tennis, even if I was totally outclassed on this occasion. Cheers Tom."  -- Patrick
Reveal CommentChristopher Gawthrope bt Steve Hurdsfield (Jul 14) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very close first set, could have gone either way. Steve playing some lovely topspin forehand shots and great serves (including 2nd serves). Second set steve made frequent errors (which i feel is unlike steve) but this is tennis and things like this can happen. Hard luck this time and goodluck with the rest of the matches"  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentChristopher Gawthrope bt Tom Long (Jul 14) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Tom is a fantastic player, his technic when hitting his topspin shots with power is lovely to watch. This match could have gone either way. Only consistency was the difference between winning and losing but judging off how Tom played... he was the real winner. Keep playing tennis consistently + having coaching and you'll be soon in group 1 of this league in no time. "  -- Christopher

Reveal CommentPatrick Lambton bt Christopher Gawthrope (Jul 9) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "A real story of players being unable to lead well in a tennis match. With a string breaking on my racquet during the hit up, I was thankfully lent one by a person on the next door court. With this new weapon in hand, I was filled with an uncharacteristic confidence and raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set. However, Chris rallied well and managed a fightback, with me eventually taking the first set narrowly. In the second set it was a similar story but the opposite, with Chris storming to 4-0 up before being pegged back at 4-4 and eventually winning it. The final set was a grueling affair, the rallies were long, the heat was hot, and despite having a commanding 5-2 lead at one stage I just managed to scrape it on a nervy tie-breaker. "  -- Patrick

Reveal CommentOwen Gearty bt Patrick Lambton (Jun 22) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "On the second longest day of the year, Paddy and Owen settled in the 6pm summer solstice sun to play the opening match of group 8. With the England fixture looming, both players seemed as nervous as the Czech defence in an error strewn first set which Owen managed to secure 6-1. In the second, Paddy and Owen's play improved dramatically with the former's serve clicking into gear putting pressure on his opponent whom was often seen scrambling across the court to return. In the points that mattered, however, Owen gained the upper hand converting many long, apprehensive deuce games and rallies by coming to the net. Overall, a great display of tennis leaving both players looking forward to the rest of their MPTL matches."  -- Owen

  • "Debutant Chowdhury fought hard but Adams had more than enough to kick their campaign off with a straight sets win. After two tight opening games, Adams established a 5-1 lead. However, Chowdhury would not go quietly (as the people playing basketball three courts away will confirm). Chowdhury broke back but the deficit was too much & Adams took the first set. Throughout the match, there were long, competitive rallies. Adams pulled off a magnificent one-handed reverse backhand. Chowdhury preserved at the net & finally got his due towards the end of the match. More often than not though, Adams won the last shot of the rally. An underarm serve from Chowdhury in the last game of the match laid bare his mental state & Adams won 6-3 6-1." -- Adam

Player Comments:

  • "On a pleasant friday evening after work...whilst the Wimbledon centrecourt semifinals were coming to a close, an incredible match unfolded on court 1 at Whythy. With the opponents roaring into a 4-2 lead with some huge serving and sensational netplay , some solid play to level up and then with set points on our side at 15-40up some big clutch serves from the opponents to take it to a tie break which we took with a narrow margin. The second set we roared into a 3-0 lead, only to be pegged back from some seriously impressive net play and huge grounstrokes and serves, to be down 3-4. A few breaks exchanged with all to play for still at 5-5. Thankfully the tide was on our side and we took it home. A quality match worthy of a court 1 crowd 😎"  -- Hassaan
