Collapse AllMeadows, Edinburgh Singles - Round 46 | Thursday 28 June 2018 to Wednesday 22 August 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 25 July 2018)

The stand-ups are on their way home, the mimes have broken out of their boxes, and their orchestras have packed their trombones and departed. And the summer festival of tennis that was the Meadows Round 46 is over too. What a round! Seventy percent of all the possible matches were played which means you were making the best of the summer sunshine and long evenings. Fringe Firsts to all of you we say, and here's to the next round.

Group Summary:

Kevin, group winner last time, was wrestling with a shoulder injury this time, so this was a chance for other talents to shine. Step up newcomer Alex who made one of the most impressive league debuts that we have seen for a while. Getting straight into the swing of things, he earned his bonus points and completed five matches - winning them all in straight sets. Runner up Will played enough good tennis to keep in race, but in truth it was Yoshihero who came closest to causing an upset (almost getting a set off the champ). It would have been interesting to see how third-placed Adam, undefeated in his three matches, would have done had he met the new champ - a match to look forward to in a future round!

Group Summary:

There are may ways to win a group. Tim chose a route high on drama and full of good tennis. Two of his five wins went the distance, including an absolute epic with Jonathan and yet with Owen matching him win for win he couldn't be sure of the group title. So would it be their head-to-head that decided things? In the end that match remained tantalisingly unplayed and the group was settled on bonus points. So by a whisker and the promise of a great match-up in the future, it is Tom we congratulate and Owen we offer our commiserations! Great group all...

We struggled through an error ridden first set, which I managed to edge 7-4 in the tie break. The 2nd was better from us both but I think I got a 2nd wind and Andi maybe not so much! Group Summary:

Almost everyone got their bonus points in this group which meant a lot of excellent matches played. For our group winner Louis, with the wins coming quite easily off his racket, it was all about keeping on playing. In his rear view mirror was Ricardo who nearly matched him for wins and actually got one more match played! So it really did all come down to their head-to-head and though the first set was tough, Louis' winning form did not desert him. Excellent tennis all round!

Group Summary:

This time last year Matt was celebrating winning Group 5 of the Meadows league, so it is timely that on this anniversary he goes one better and wins Group 4. He achieves the victory by ending with more wins under his belt than anyone else - not that it was an easy round. Third-placed Rokas took him to three sets, runner-up Liam made him battle for the second set in their match-up, and right at the beginning of the round, Colin beat Matt! A very entertaining group and congratulations again to Matt.

Player Comments:

  • "We were lucky with the weather as it stayed dry no matter how dire the forecast had been. So pretty perfect conditions for a hard fought match with many games going to deuce . Chris started well and took a 2-0 lead in the first set, and I'm not sure how I managed to claw that back and take the set. We were just neck and neck in the second but I got a break to go 5-4 on my serve but couldn't get over the line and we headed into a tie break. Tie breaks are weird things and it could have gone either way but luck was on my side and I managed to get to six points before Chris and was relieved when my last serve didn't come back at me. I think I would have been done for if it had slipped into a third set. Good run around, cheers Chris."  -- Matt
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Neil Watts (Jul 24) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Neil has some brain cells left so he could remember that we'd played in the league before. I looked it up in the archive and it was group 4 round 29 way back in 9/11/14 and I won 6-0, 6-3! So strangely similar result. I know Neil's game anyway from the club social so I was expecting it to be a hard fought match and it was mostly, but Neil gave me some relief with some double faults and his ball just going long more times than mine. However, I'm pretty sure I did more of the running around and sweating. I also appeared to have nature on my side with a pigeon giving it laldy just as Neil was about to hit the ball and the sun bursting out just at the right point on his serve! Otherwise perfect conditions for an enjoyable game of tennis "  -- Matt

  • "A damp start but it dried out quite nicely as per the weather forecast. Can't really remember the first set and a wee bit surprised at what looks like a comfortable score-line: that's not what it felt like. In the second it was a whole lot tighter but I had managed to get to 5:4 and was serving for the match. We then entered some sort of time warp whare I had some huge number of match points but eventually collapsed and we moved another couple of game to the tie-break. Liam took an early 3-1 lead and then I had a vision of sitting down with a nice cool beer and I didn't want to slog through a third set to get there! Enjoyable match that could have gone the other way - cheers Liam"  -- Matt

Player Comments:

  • "Not sure if it was just me with the timing out on hitting the ball or the way that Rokas was putting it back to me, but the first set was just a blizzard of my bad hits and Rokas took it easily. I was up 4-1 in the second and then it all went pear-shaped again and Rokas pulled it back and I was lucky to get it to a tie break. Just in the last game or so in the second set my serve finally made its appearance and this gave me the edge to secure the tie-break. The light was beginning to fade a bit in the third as were the energy levels both sides of the net and it was just a case of who made the fewer mistakes. Group Summary:

Lotenna was on hand to show newcomer Robert that the league isn't always about winning (their match was a brilliant three-setter that went in the end to Lotenna) but there is no taking away from from Robert and his debut performance. Robert's four other matches were won in straight sets which have him a better win loss ratio, and more points, that anyone else in the group. Well done to Drew for keeping it close, but it is Robert who is heading up the groups this time.

Reveal CommentKeith Martin bt Lindsay Maclean (Jul 22) 6-4, 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Another really enjoyable game with lots of deuce points which could have gone either way. Both of us took a while to get to grips with the wind affecting our serves and groundstrokes but once it got warmer and things settled we soon found our rythm. As before it was a really great match with long rallies and lots of running across the court. The final set, despite what the score suggests, was a lot closer. "  -- Keith
Reveal CommentMark Delos Reyes bt Lindsay Maclean (Jul 15) 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match played on windy conditions as we needed to constantly adjust depending on which side of the court we are playing. Tight match all through out, with just a few points separating us, and could have easily been the other way around. Lindsay gifted me with her first double fault of the match in the 2nd Set Tiebreak, which ended up being a critical point to win the 2nd Set - fortunate to end it there I don't think I could hang on for a 3rd Set. Enjoyed that match, thanks Lindsay!"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentMark Delos Reyes bt Bire Dhir (Jul 9) 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "All through out an intense match with both of us not giving any easy points against each other. The 1st set was extremely competitive but Biren's solid work from the baseline proves too good as he took the 1st set. The intensity carried over to the next two sets as the score continued to be very tight. Midway through the 3rd set, things took an unfortunate event when Biren tweaked his ankle. But incredibly, Biren just walked it off to play an even better tennis. A couple of lucky shots towards the end were the only ones that separated us as I finally took the 3rd set. Thanks for the match! "  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match which could have gone either way -- I am lucky to get the first set which eventually became an important factor. The hot playing conditions added another level of challenge for both of us as the match went on. Towards the 3rd set, we were both crawling to finish our match as it became a battle of who could stay longer on the court. Fortunately I was able to hold on to win the 3rd set. That was a real enjoyable match! Thanks Keith :))"  -- Mark

  • "Closely contested match. Great start by Mark in the first set, winning the first 3 games. I led the second set 5-2 and had a matchpoint saved. Mark then saved 3 more matchpoints at 5-4 down with great serving. Eventually a tiebreak was required and I managed to convert the sixth matchpoint. "  -- Michael

Group Summary:

It was all going so well for runner-up Catie, joining the Meadows league for the first time, until she faced up to Laura who was clearly in no mood to hang around and won for the loss of just a couple of games! Had Catie won that match she would have been in serious contention for the top spot having already beaten the eventual champ, Marcin. Marcin though played a tactically excellent round, earning bonus points and playing enough matches to ensure that couple of defeats weren't going to be fatal. His own good win against Laura only underlines his claim to the top spot. Well done Marcin and everyone on this entertaining group!
