Top marks to everyone for battling through the typically mixed Edinburgh weather to get your matches played and producing some close scorelines. It was great to welcome back several players from previous rounds or different leagues alongside the Edinburgh regulars, and between you over 70% of matches were played which is a great effort. Keep up the good work next round!

Group Summary:

There was a change of guard at the top of Group 1 with Meadows league debutant Liam Craig taking top honours with an impressive 6 wins out of 6, finishing 2 points clear of runner up Adam E on 5 wins. Liam's wins were all straight sets (including a walkover) but there were a couple of 3 set tussles in the group, namely Pedrog's comeback win against Guillaume and an "epic battle" between the two Adam's. Great tennis!

  • "Great match played in the freezing cold under the lights. Fortunately no wind so pretty good conditions for tennis once you get passed the cold! Everything hinges somehow around one game as I was unable to break serve until the game at 4-1 down in the second set and looking back I think that must have been where everything turned around for me. Some great points and lots of chasing balls down. There was a down the line backhand pass and a full stretch drop volley from Guillaume that stood out for me."  -- Pedrog

This was a fantastic group in terms of matches played and scheduling, with most players completing at least 5 matches and all but 2 earning the midway bonus points. Congratulations to Jonathan for leapfrogging 2 places to finish top of the group this time with 5 wins and no defeats. Finlay was a close second with his only defeat being to Jonathan despite a strong comeback in the second set. Doug had a strong round too in third place although he narrowly lost out in a 3 set thriller against Callum, "a true epic played over three days and multiple courts and weather conditions". What a battle!

Finlay saved a couple of match points at 5-4 down in the second, and had me worried that it we were going into a third. Managed to start well in the tiebreak and make some first serves which was enough to see me through in the end. Thanks for the game Finlay. "  -- Jonathan

Player Comments:

  • "It was a beautiful, weirdly warm night with not too much breeze. Pleasantly unexpected. As was the score, which flatters me hugely! Good game with good long ralleys. I was pleased with the way I played though. I was serving pretty well, hitting back the extra ball and managing to move the ball around reasonably accurately. Pierre was a little rusty too! I think it will be very different when I play him next. Look forward to that! "  -- Doug

I was fortunate to get through in the end, it truly could have gone either way. Hope to get the opportunity to play again Pierre, maybe indoors next time! Cheers. "  -- Jonathan

Group Summary:

It was a successful return to league action for Philippe who topped the group with 5 wins and 2 defeats, the only player to complete all 7 matches. His wins included a tight 2 setter against Alan which went to a second set tiebreak, with Alan running down every shot. Matthew and David were close behind Philippe also with 5 wins each, and both recorded wins against Philippe, however his superior scheduling skills earning the midway bonus points helped see him clear. Weather conditions were mixed across the round, as to be expected in the Edinburgh Autumn!

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match to open my league activity this round after yesterday’s wash-out. First set score was closer in terms of rallies than the score suggests but my forehand was firing today and solid serving with only one double fault helped. Philip stormed to a 4-0 lead in set two but some MAJOR re-grouping helped me through 6 tough games to close outdtivfn on by the thought I did not want a 3rd set.. Great match overall. "  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "A great match in a sunny windless day in Edinburgh. Match started very close being tied at 3-3 after some long winded games and rallies. However I managed to pull away and win the first set. Alan started the second set very well being up 0-3. I managed to pull through and tie the game up which led to a very close tiebreak game. It was a very fun game against an opponent relentless to reach every shot, even if it meant bouncing off the fence to get back into the point. Thanks for the match!"  -- Philippe

Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Drew Baxter (Sep 28) 4-6, 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Drew got off to a good start with the first two games and I was then playing catch-up for the rest of the first set. He was doing a good job of getting the last ball back from anywhere but I managed to get it back to 4-all but couldn't hold on any more. The second set felt very similar to the first with lots of deuce games but I was managing to get the wins so the score for the second set ended up quite different to the first. Drew had so far been getting most of my serves back so far in the match but probably a wee bit of 3rd set fatigue on his part and me putting a bit more power on the serve resulted in quite a few serve wins for me and the third set went quickly. Perfect conditions for a nice game of tennis on the Meadows"  -- Matt
