Another busy round in Meadows Tennis League despite the evenings drawing in and the temperatures dropping! We had 6 groups this time and collectively you managed to play just over two thirds of all possible matches which is a great effort. Luckily the leagues can keep going north of the border so keep up the good work in the next round!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Matthew H for winning the Group 1 crown at the first attempt, his 4 wins being enough to finish 2 points clear at the top of the table. There were "a lot of long rallies" in his match against runner up Adam while the group's only 3 setter was Stuart's comeback win against Matthew on a "showery, blustery Sunday morning" with the wind making for "many comic rallies"!

Reveal CommentKeith Michell bt Alan Seywright (Oct 4) 6-4, 6-3

Reveal CommentOliver Heaton bt Alex Cruickshank (Oct 4) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a tough one against Alex, who has a powerful weapon in his first serve. I lived in constant fear of it going in, which it did a lot more in the second set. Alex was constantly threatening with devilish slices and a great topspin forehand but struggled to unleash his full power. With a bit more consistency he will be a force in this group."  -- Oliver

Reveal CommentOliver Heaton bt Alan Seywright (Sep 26) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Starting during a bitterly cold Saturday morning this matched delivered some great slogging rallies and some devilish skill from both parties to really bring the heat. Despite ending in a flattering scoreline, this was a really fun and competitive game, which had us both working hard at times. From what Alan said at the end, it seems my urgency on the court put off his usually unflappable rhythm, which gave me the edge on the day."  -- Oliver
Reveal CommentOliver Heaton bt Frank Broderick (Sep 23) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Phew! Frank came out fighting, going 4-1 up in the first set. With a few games played, the nerves settled, and a few double faults creeping in from Frank, I managed to pull a few back. Thanks for a great game! -- No, not the drop shot!"  -- Oliver

Player Comments:

  • "What a match facing Alex The Hammer Cruickshank. When Alex's first serve goes in, I imagine it was like Andre Agassi playing Goran Invanisevic back in the day (unstoppable). Great match. Alex will definitely win more than he looses in this group. "  -- Frank
Reveal CommentAlan Seywright bt Liam Cassidy (Sep 19) 5-7, 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Liam deservedly won a tight first set 7-5, and the second set was very competitive with the match being tied. The momentum stayed with me in the deciding third set. A close game and keenly fought in perfect Autumn weather."  -- Alan
Reveal CommentMo Mirza bt Frank Broderick (Sep 18) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I strutted onto the court, daydreaming of seeing my girlfriend later that evening, and saw my opponent in front of me... Frank. A great tennis player – skilled and full of surprise short balls. It was going to be a tough match. Somehow my height gave me an advantage and I found myself in the lead. Frank notched up the mind games and drop shots and followed closely up until the end making me work hard for every point. With the distracting thoughts of the debauchery that awaited me later in the evening, I battled to win the first set and eventually the match. What a great game. Thank you Frank."  -- Mo

Reveal CommentFrank Broderick bt Alan Seywright (Sep 15) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Myself and Alan have not played each other in many years, so when we saw each other for the first time in years at the entrance gate to The Meadows, I was thinking to myself Christ its him, Mr Consistent while Alan admitted to me he was thinking Oh no, its him, Frank, and the match did not disappoint. After 2 hours of play on a very warm late summers Edinburgh afternoon, myself and Alan battled like the old days, with long highly skilled rallies. Happily to say, I was fortunate to come out as the winner on this occasion. Hopefully I don't meet many Alans within this Group. "  -- Frank
Reveal CommentOliver Heaton bt Liam Cassidy (Sep 14) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Tricky match in windy conditions. Lots of close points. “You cannot be serious!”"  -- Mo

Group Summary:

Another close group with James and Seb neck and neck on 5 wins and 14 points, and frustratingly their head to head was tantalisingly poised at one set all when the lights went off... and sadly a conclusion wasn't scheduled! The title therefore went to James as he remained unbeaten across the round. There was a "fun game" between James and Pawel on "the first properly cold night of tennis"... brrr!!

  • "A really fun game, played over two evenings. Michael started on top, breaking me in the first game and holding on to his lead until midway through the set when I finally broke back. We had a number of long rallies throughout, with Michael working some really nice angles and slowing the pace down with some loopy shots to my backhand. I edged ahead to take the first set and we had to finish at 3-3 in the second. The second evening I started quickly, taking the next two games, but tightened up when serving for the match and we went to 5-5. I held and then fashioned 3 match points on Michael's serves; the third of which I took after Michael saved the first two with some clutch tennis at the end." -- James

The momentum in the second set swung all over the place, as I took a 2-0 lead, but Pavel won the next three including a 10+ minute game at 2-2 where he saved multiple break points. I came back and the set was on a knife-edge at 4-3 30-30 when the wind carried Pavel's volley long. Look forward to playing again."  -- James

  • "The most evenly matched game I have played this session. Was a lot of fun. Gordon pulled ahead in the first set but I managed to make a comeback. Tiebreaker was touch and go and could have gone either way. I kept the momentum up from the first set but the scores don't show the back and forth from deuces. Managed to get a few lucky lobs in this game but Gordon had me beat upfront. Great weather conditions with the sun starting to hang a bit low for serves. Will definitely pick up with Gordon again. The match started off fairly evenly, mostly on serve with me breaking Gordon's opening service game and him breaking my third. It took a while but I eventually got more of a read on his shots, which gave me the advantage in the second set. I look forward to playing Gordon again soon. "  -- James
Reveal CommentCorbin Chaplin bt Pavel Beja (Sep 16) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great evening for tennis, no breeze and no rain. We had a number of really good rallies, both of us testing each others ability to get to the difficult balls, which made for an interesting game. There were plenty of deuce games so could have gone either way on a different day. Really enjoyed it and hope to play again soon Pavel! "  -- Corbin
Reveal CommentJames Hopkins bt Corbin Chaplin (Sep 14) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A really fun game, played in a good spirit. It started off with Corbin giving me the run around, but I dug in to go 5-1 up in the first set. He came back though - in particular with some effective angles on the forehand - and we had a number of really tight games - almost all going to deuce - which saw me finish off the first set, but Corbin went ahead 4-1 in the second. Luckily for me I was able to put together a string of games and take the 2nd set, which was just as well as I was pretty spent after an hour and a half of competitive tennis on a humid afternoon! Look forward to playing with Corbin again, and given how even the match was it could go either way in future. "  -- James

Group Summary:

Lutz led the chasing pack thanks to having a "very good first serve" while Robert had a strong round too in third place. His toughest win was a "tight and fun match" against Gytis that went all the way to a third set tiebfreak on a day of "mixed weather conditions".

The second was much closer with many deuce games and breaks and could have gone either way. Given the fading light we decided to play a tiebreak in the 3rd which I was able to edge. Thanks for the game Jackie good luck in the rest of your matches "  -- Robert

Felt very lucky to get the 1st set. Ruth took it to 4:2, but I tried to remain competitive and somehow edged forward to secure a final break at 6:5 to get the win in a really fun and well spirited game......best wishes with the remainder of your matches Ruth......Ian "  -- Ian

Ian new to the league and new to the court surface played very well, despite him still making adjustments to the new surroundings. I couldn’t manage to keep consistency in my game, but felt a turning point in the 2nd set where I pushed hard to get a 3rd set. Quite an even game in the 3rd but I managed to take a lead, then Ian began a come back, and I fought back again to clinch it.
