I got the early break first set and served for it at 5-2 but Matt did a good job of coming back at me, saving a bunch of set points before I got over the line. Second set was almost a role reversal, with Matt going up the early break. I had a number of chances to break back but didn't take them so Matt took the set. Unfortunately, we had little time left to play out a 3rd set so had to play a match tiebreak. Cheers for the match Matt :)"  -- Lee

  • "After a day of heavy rain it finally cleared in time for our match. The real fight took place in the first set which lasted nearly an hour. David played some great shots, powerful first serves, excellent volleys and some hard ground shots with plenty of top spin. More consistency would have secured the set for him. In the end I won by the skin of my teeth after saving 2 set points. A most enjoyable match, I look forward to playing David again."  -- Keith

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable match at Abercorn this morning in what turned out to be bizarrely hot and sunny conditions. I managed to break in the first game after multiple deuce points and then again in the last game of the set to see it out. Adam playing aggressively and me on the defensive made for many cat and mouse points but as the match went on I started to get more luck. Unfortunately Adam (admittedly) struggled in the heat but played valiantly and pushed through to the very last point. Thanks for the match Adam and I look forward to playing again under the lights. Second set one even tighter, broke Corbin in the middle of the set but he came back straight away and the it all came down to the last game at 5-4 when I got the decisive break and win the game. Very enjoyable game against Corbin who got me running a lot and who is such gentleman. Thanks "  -- Robin

  • "Lovely warm evening for tennis at Abercorn tonight. I had a big advantage as Keith had never played on this surface before and took a while to adjust. I also got a couple of lucky net calls along the way which didn’t help. We had a lot of deuce games so the score could have been really different and definitely flatters me. Nice to meet you Keith and next time we’ll play at Joppa. "  -- Colin
Reveal CommentColin Gill bt Corbin Chaplin (May 5) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Another close match tonight with Corbin on wet Meadows courts. I broke Corbin in the first game of both sets and he broke back immediately both times. That pretty much sums up the match with lots of long games, breaks of serve and no breathing room. Served at 5-4 for the match and was broken but then held on at 6-5 after multiple deuce points. Fun but tense! Thanks Corbin ?"  -- Colin

  • "Very tough, close & enjoyable match with Robin at Abercorn today. Going with serve until 4 all in the first, I managed to get the break and serve out the first set. Lots of deuce games and long rallies led to me serving for the match at 5-2 in the second only for Robin to start a comeback. Got the opportunity to serve (again) for the match at 5-4 and managed to get it over the line almost 2 hours after starting. Thanks Robin"  -- Colin

Second set was not straight forward. Bit of confusion with the score after 4 games and I am extremely sorry if I got this wrong. I managed to see out the last 3 games to secure the 2nd set. I think Scott started to warm up and set was a lot tighter in remaining games. I managed to finish set 6-4. Scott started the 2nd set very strongly and raced 4-2 ahead. Some very long rallies with both players covering a lot of ground. Scott had some good chances to go 5-2 up but I somehow got through the 7th game to make it 4-3. I got off to a good start in all three sets but was pegged back each time just managing to get over the line in the first and the third. I would recommend playing on these courts for anyone that gets the opportunity. They are nice courts and quiet unlike the often queue heavy Meadows at the moment - although the queues may get shorter when the pubs open!
