There was an extra group in Northampton Parks Tennis League this time round and 2 new players to welcome to the league, so thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm to get back on court post-lockdown. All but one of the possible matches were scheduled too which is a great effort so we're looking forward to the next round already!

Group Summary:

It was tight at the top of Group 1 with Kieran and Mark tied on 11 points apiece so Kieran's win in their head to head proved decisive, edging him into top spot ahead of defending champ Mark. It couldn't have been closer with their match going all the way to a third set tiebreak, the closest match of the group! Antony played well to come from a set down to beat Matthew in 3 sets, another match that "could've gone either way".

Player Comments:

  • "Matt used his sliced shots to good effect in the wind, and I was lucky to win the first set, unfortunately for Matt his consistency slipped in the 2nd set, I was glad I did not have to play 3 sets as was feeling tired. Congratulations to Kieran for winning the round."  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game with Joe. Both sets were a little closer then the score lines may suggest with some games going to deuce. Joe struggled a bit with his rhythm tonight but still made it a competitive game. Looking forward to our next match. Cheers for the hit Joe! "  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyed a great game, with the 1st set being very close. Second set was also very close with both of us holding back a little bit and allowing for a lot of deuces. Thanks for the game Matt!"  -- Kieran
Reveal CommentMatthew Davis bt Wayne Savage (Jul 14) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game with Wayne. First set was a close encounter, I served for the set at 5-3 only to be broken back and Then found myself a couple of set points down at 5-6 which I managed to save and we ended up in a tie break in which I found myself 0-4 down however i then managed to real off 7 consecutive points to take the set. The 2nd set just had the one break with me taking it 6-3. Overall a really good game. Good luck with the rest of your games Wayne!"  -- Matthew

Reveal CommentWayne Savage bt Joseph Morrissey (Jul 11) 6-3, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable game played in a friendly atmosphere. A good 2.25hours on court on a great morning for tennis. Joe was hitting the ball well and the first 2 sets were close all the way through. We were both quite tired by the 3 rd set but a great game. Thanks. "  -- Wayne
Reveal CommentAntony Parselle bt Matthew Davis (Jul 7) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A really good game played partly in drizzle and on 3 different courts for over 2 hours. It looked ominous at 3-0 down in the first but managed to play my way back into it even though I still lost the first set. Second set really even again and I just managed to get over the line with both playing some good shots and long rallies. I needed to play my best to win second and third sets. But could've gone either way. Really good game and look forward to the next one!"  -- Antony
Reveal CommentMark Alewood bt Wayne Savage (Jul 4) 6-2, 0-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "As the scores show this was a game of 3 sets, I won 6-2 in first set, but there were a lot of deuces, Wayne did not let his head drop, and came back strong in the 2nd set, I got tense and the more games I lost the tenser I got !! Fortunately I managed to compose myself in the 3rd set, and Wayne was not as consistent as in the 2nd set, and I was able to close out the match. An enjoyable match played in a freindly spirit and look forward to playing Wayne again."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentAntony Parselle bt Joseph Morrissey (Jun 30) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "The first two matches were really tough coming back from a break but finally found some energy and form for this one. Joseph was more aggressive throughout and started well. So although 3-0 down in the first and 4-0 down in the second I managed to slow the play down to a level I was more comfortable at and came out on top. So it was probably more match play than good play that won it but really enjoyed the match."  -- Antony
Reveal CommentKieran Taylor bt Antony Parselle (Jun 25) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed the game, as i did the last time we played. A lot of deuces and the heat didn't make the match any easier. Thanks for the match!"  -- Kieran
Mark Alewood bt Antony Parselle (Jun 23) 7-5, 6-4
Reveal CommentJoseph Morrissey bt Kieran Taylor (Jun 23) 6-3, 1-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A grueling three hours on court. I hit some flow towards the end of the first set, and as a result took my foot off the gas a little in the second. Kieran took full advantage, putting me under real pressure and not allowing me to develop any rhythm and play my way back into the set. A cagey third set which I just managed to edge. Great match - thanks Kieran. "  -- Joseph

Player Comments:

  • "Joseph started well but luckily for me I managed to improve, although it may have been down to me threatening to give him bread and jam when he comes for a socially distanced meal next week if he beat me !!!! Always enjoyable when we play, it can go either way."  -- Mark
