Collapse AllNorth Tyneside Singles - Round 10 | Thursday 30 August 2018 to Wednesday 24 October 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 26 September 2018)

A good start to the Autumn in North Tyneside with over two thirds of matches played and numerous competitive contests, despite some "drab blustery conditions" and the added difficulty of the "low sun". Thanks for all your efforts and we hope to see you all next time for more of the same!

Group Summary:

Paul was determined not to relinquish his group one crown, beating all four of his opponents and bagging bonus points to give himself the best chance of success. Simon also secured four wins and showed scheduling prowess to join Paul on ten points at the top. It therefore all comes down to the match between the two and it was Paul who stepped it up a gear to emerge from this "gritty, competitive affair" with the victory. Thanks for the many comments too which provided us with an excellent story of the round.

Player Comments:

  • "A match which started in drab blustery conditions with a threat of rain . Simon started strongly and easily won the first set and of the few points I won more were from double faults than in open play! Somehow I managed to win the opening game of the second set (luckily!!) but Simon won all the remaining games and though there were a few good competitive points -overall he was an easy and deserved winner . Nevertheless a very enjoyable match played in an excellent spirit and by the end we even had autumn early evening sunshine! "  -- Peter

Player Comments:

  • "A great match with Sam, played at Souter Park. We were pretty evenly matched throughout the game. There were some terrific rallies - some of the longest I've been involved in. And whilst both of us started off playing percentage tennis in order to not lose points, there were plenty of times when when the percentages went out of the window as we scrambled and improvised and scurried from the baseline to the net and back again. Great match, played in a really friendly and fair manner and the result really could have gone either way. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Zak Geach (Oct 3) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very tight and competitive match played in a good spirit. Both sets were very close and could have gone either way. Zak started well but I got the match back to 4-4 and managed to close out the set the difference maybe coming down to a few double faults which were counterbalanced by some excellent pacy serves . Zak went 3-0 up in the second but again I got back to 4-4 before I was just able to get over the line in the last two games "  -- Peter

Player Comments:

  • "Played Zak at Crawford Park today. It was a pleasure meet him. The match was played in a very good spirit and Zak was kind enough to provide several tubes of balls to use. It was obvious that this was a tricky match for Zak. He'd played earlier today on another, faster surface, with a low bounce and a strong hitting opponent; Crawford Park was the polar opposite: High, sometimes random bounce, and slow paced; and I wasn't a strong hitter. One of my serves bounced almost vertically because of a ridge near the service line - all part of the fun of park tennis. The switch of court surface definitely played a major role in the result. We ended just as the rain turned too heavy to play on. "  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "A gritty, competitive affair. Simon played really well & was in control for much of the match. 1st set was tight with most games going to deuce & I managed to come through 6-1 in no way reflective of the score. Simon started really well in the 2nd set going 2-0 up before I managed to break back to level at 2-2. The key part of the match came in the 5th game of 2nd when during a long, competitive rally Simon slipped & landed pretty badly on his elbow. Despite still playing well & making life really difficult for me you could see he was in a fair bit of pain. Hard to say how the set would've ended up had he not slipped on that point. A really good hard game in which Simon pushed me all the way, a huge relief to get through"  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "Decent hit at Beverley Park tonight. Sadly for Sam he caught me on a good day and knowing that my fitness wouldn't hold up to three sets I had to try and hit big and put points away as quickly as I could. That tactic was a bit hit and miss in the first set. I actually hit two terrible shots consecutively long into the fence in my haste to get through the game. Second set, I managed to hit reasonably big with a fair amount of consistency meaning I could get my nose in front and then finish the set quickly. Cheers for the game Sam, good luck for the rest of your games! "  -- Paul

  • "A decent game with Peter at Richardson Dees. There were some good rallies but it was a relatively comfortable win apart from one lovely forehand winner Peter clipped past me which caught the net on it's way, don't think I would've got it back anyway as it was a really nice shot. Cheers Peter, "  -- Paul
