Collapse AllNorth Tyneside Singles - Round 12 | Thursday 11 April 2019 to Wednesday 5 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 8 May 2019)

This may have been a relatively small round of this league, with one group, but it was almost perfectly formed. It was full of generous spirited players, who played 86% of all possible matches (24 out of 28). Many thanks to all for giving 100% and do spread the word if you can! It would be brilliant to see this league grow and get even better matches for everyone.

Group Summary:

James and Simon tied on points for second place but as James won their head to head ("on a beautiful night, with most games going to deuce") he takes silver this time and fittingly had a great match v the champ to close out this round ("James covering every inch of the court as usual," said Paul!). Matches it seems were (mostly) played in sunshine but all played in excellent spirits. Many thanks for all the good sportsmanship and great commentaries.

Player Comments:

  • "It took some considerable synchronising of diaries to get this one played but willing on both sides meant we finally got on the court. James started with a monster of an ace in the 1st game but I managed to break serve and race into a 4-0 lead. I served reasonably consistently, even a couple of aces here and there, sadly for James, he hit a few more double faults than me today. There was some really good tennis played with some great rallies and James covering every inch of the court as usual. I didn't really allow him to get on the front foot which meant I managed to keep my nose in front throughout what was a very good match to close out the league. Cheers James!"  -- Paul

  • "First set very close on another beautiful night. Most games going to deuce and I just played well enough to take it. The second had another lot of close games and the overall scoreline in that set doesn't represent the challenge in the tennis. Look forward to playing Simon again next time "  -- James

  • "Part 2: This was the rematch from the first attempt at playing the match a few weeks ago which was left unfinished. The first match was left at 6-1, 4-6, 2-2 before both Craig and myself had other commitments. We both decided on playing the full game again today which would be the fairest way to decide the outcome. The first set was decided pretty quickly and rather unexpectedly I managed to wrap it up 6-0. The 2nd set was a lot closer and more like what we both expected, lots of long rallies and more winners from both sides. I managed to forge ahead 4-1 in the set before Craig started to comeback and put the pressure on, but managed to take the last couple of games to finish 6-4. Cheers for the game Craig, look forward to our next game!"  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyabale match with Peter played in good spirit. The game was closer perhaps than the score suggests with lots of deuce points especially in the earlier part of each set. Both of us made quite a few unforced errors throughout the match and perhaps my consistency towards the back end of each set was the main reason for the win. Lots of longer rallies with both of us running down every shot made for an entertaining game! Thanks for the game Peter. Good Luck with your remaining games :)"  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "The first set started very slowly with the first 2 games very right and took about 20 minutes. It sped up somewhat after that and despite numerous tight games I managed to get the first set 6-2. The second set was even tighter with neither player being more than 1 game ahead up until I managed to get the vital points at the right time. A really enjoyable game "  -- James

  • "A good hit with Peter in glorious sunshine at Richardson Dees. My kick serve was landing today and caused Peter a few problems, a lot of his returns were going up in the air and I managed to put away most of the overhead smashes and volleys that I attempted. Peter deservedly took a game in the first set but I managed to take the second set to love with some half decent winners and more smashes and volleys. Cheers for the game as always Peter!"  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match with James on a sunny night at Richardson Dees. Both started quite well with James managing to forge ahead 4-2 in the first set. I managed to find a bit of rhythm mixed with a few winners and took the next four games to win the set 6-4. I managed to keep the momentum going into the 2nd set just losing the one game but again there were a quite a few games which went to deuce and I probably managed to make a few less mistakes. Both of us made quite a few unforced errors throughout the match but both enjoyed some decent rallies and a couple of shots landing on the line which could have gone either way. Thanks for the game James. Looking forward to playing you again. Cheers "  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "A decent game with Simon in glorious sunshine. Both started fairly well, serving well and hitting some nice shots but most of the key points seemed to go my way in the first set, giving a somewhat unrepresentative scoreline. 2nd set was a much better indication of the story of the match, going with serve to mean that it was 2-2 after the first 4 games. Simone hitting a couple of big aces that I had no answer to. I managed to get ahead at 5-2 before Simon took another game back with some really nice, consistent hitting to make it 5-3 before I served it out to finish the match. A good game, played in a good spirit, cheers Simon & good luck for your 2nd game of the day later!"  -- Paul

  • "On a changeable day of weather we managed to luck out and get the sunny part of the day. The first set was very close with most games going to deuce and James D establishing an early narrow lead. Unfortunately neither player seemed to be able to get their serving going and the difference in the end was probably me having one good service game. Despite some tight games in the next set I ran away to a 5-0 lead as I found some consistency. James D called a serve on match point in but I could see it was out and we carried on. This seemed to spur James D on and he got the next couple of games. With momentum swinging I managed to just hold on to get the win. Was a really good enjoyable and well matched game."  -- James
Reveal CommentSimon Addis bt Keith Wood (May 5) 6-3 Keith Wood Retired

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable game with Keith with the sun shining down at Richardson Dees on Sunday night. Unfortunately only managed to play one set as Keith had to retire injured at the end of the first set due to an ongoing calf injury. The first set involved lots of games going to deuce and a good battle throughout. I managed to just take the first set 6-3 before the injury to Keith occurred which was a shame as it was a good match with both myself and Keith playing some good winners. Looking forward to playing again in the future Keith and finishing off the game. Hope the injury clears up soon. Thanks. Simon "  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable game. first set a bit one sided. Paul played a good game with a consistent 1st serve with a big kick. I managed to get to grips with it most of the time but was not enough in the 1st set with him taking it 6-1. The 2nd set saw me up my game a bit & managed to take a few games. My first serve was inconsistent today with not many making it in and my second wasn’t great either, causing a few very frustrating double faults (usually straight after a well won point/winner as well). In the end Paul’s consistency & well driven attacking shots proved too much & he took the second set 6-3. Regardless of score, a really enjoyable game with some good tennis and big hitting rallies. Really looking forward to my next match"  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable and close fought game on a drizzly evening. The wet conditions made it tough to start with for Craig and I. Balls were heavy and we both had to adjust our shots to cope with the conditions. Many of the games went to several deuces and the end score doesn’t really do Craig justice as it could have swung either way. I had less double faults this game but ground strokes were inconsistent. Some great drop shots from Craif that left me standing still. All in all a very enjoyable evening. Looking forward to a rematch soon."  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "Another evenly matched, closely fought contest on a glorious, sunny Spring evening in Richardson Dee's Park. Peter was the first to settle and quickly built a 3-0 lead. However, Craig eventually began to find some form to take the first set 6-3. A much more balanced and competitive second set contained the best of the play with Craig just shading it to win 6-4. A really enjoyable match. Thanks Peter."  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "A decent hit with Chris at Richardson Dees to start the league season. Chris served really well ...... in the warm up.....and then sadly for him had a really inconsistent service game which set the tone for the first set and the match. I managed to get through the match without any double faults which always makes a big difference in the local tennis leagues. There was some good tennis and Chris' superior fitness meant that most points saw rallies as he chased everything down. More consistency in my game won the day for me but it was an enjoyable game, as it always is with Chris. Cheers and good luck for the rest of your matches Chris!"  -- Paul

  • "Double duty today due to a busy work schedule this week, so a second game at Richardson Dees. Struggled to get to grips with Craig's slice at first but a decent warm up meant that I was able to deal with it a bit better when the match started. First set I managed to keep my nose in front and win the key points on Craig's serve despite him scampering across the court to run everything down. Second set saw Craig deservedly win a game and cover the court well but my consistency meant that I was able to see the set out through a number of games that went to deuce. Cheers Craig, all the best for the league season mate!"  -- Paul

  • "Another enjoyable game with Chris on a cool night at Richardson Dees. The first few games in the 1st set were very close with both myself and Chris finding our rythem. I managed to find my feet a little quicker than Chris and was able to take the firts set 6-1. The 2nd set was very close for the first 4/5 games and lots of games going to deuce. Some good rallies on what seemed an even harder court at Richardson Dees which the balls bouncing up pretty high but some good winners from both of us. Managing to finish off the set 6-3 probably didn't do Chris justice as he played well. Already looking forward to my next game with Chris in the future. Thanks for the game Chris. Simon"  -- Simon

  • "Really enjoyed another match in the league. I started off strong but inconsistency kicked in and I ended up making a number of Unforced errors. Peter played some good lobs off some poor approach shots from myself. All in all a good game and enjoying getting more game time under my belt. "  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable game with Peter as always in very warm and sunny conditions. We both struggled to find our usual level in the first set with the majority of games going against serve. The second set saw us both up our game with some good rallies with Peter in excellent position at 5-2 up. I was somehow able to grind out five straight games to edge the second set 7-5, but under pressure from Peter throughout. I don’t think we could have dealt with a third set after two hours in that heat!"  -- Chris

  • "A good, close, evenly fought Sunday morning match in cold and at times wet conditions. Chris struggled to achieve consistency with his first serve which was probably the key factor in the final result. Some excellent long rallies and a fair few back and forward deuce games in a very enjoyable match. Thanks Chris. I look forward to our next game."  -- Craig
