Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Edwin Cartledge (Aug 20) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful, sunny afternoon at Beverley Park. Both players had struggled to arrange games this round and Edward admitted that it had been a while since he had graced the courts. Consequently, the first set featured quite a few unforced errors from both players and the result flattered Craig somewhat. In the second set Ed began to rediscover his true form with a more consistent serve, some excellent sliced groundstrokes and a good number of cheeky drop shots. The heat and sunshine began to take their toll on both players as they faced the prospect of a third set decider. In the end Craig scampered and scrambled his way to victory despite the superior court craft of his opponent. A very enjoyable match on a lovely summer afternoon. Thanks."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Craig Taylor (Aug 4) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A nice sunny morning and some nice tennis played by both. It was a battle of styles today with heavy topspin playing slice, and luckily for me topspin won the day. I also served much more consistently than I do normally, albeit with the occasional errant ball toss in there. Best of luck in the rest of your games Craig!"  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt James Gray (Jul 21) 6-3, 4-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "I don't think either myself or James would claim we played our best tennis today, but what a battle nonetheless. I started faster, broke early and took the first set 6-3 and also got myself out in front 3-1 in the second too. Then James really found his form, started hitting a higher percentage of first serves in, and really took it to me with his effective net play. Match duly leveled one set all. Match then quickly getting away from me as james' fine play continued and all of a sudden it's 1-5. A change of trainers, racket, attitude from me and I slowly chipped away and got it back to 5-5. By this point we were both out on our feet but I just managed to squeak the win."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentSimon Addis bt Craig Taylor (Jul 17) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable game with Craig on a humid and windy lunchtime in Wallsend. We both hadn’t played in a few weeks since the last round and the first few games reflected this as we struggled to find any rhythm and consistency. I managed to take the first set 6-3 and forge ahead in the 2nd set taking the first three games. Craig began to find some form playing some good winners and took the next two games before I managed to finish off the set 6-2. Always a good game with Craig and I’ll look forward to our next encounter. Cheers Craig, good luck in your future games."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt James Driver (Jul 10) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good match with a somewhat flattering scoreline for me. About 15 minutes of play was taken up by a single game where I had to fight tooth and nail to hold my serve for 1-1 in the second set, if James had broke me there I'm sure the match would have had a very different feel. Some good shots played by both, some excellent chase downs by James in particular. In the end I think my more consistent serving probably won me the day."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Stuart Mcgowan (Jul 8) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I haven't been in great form recently and Stu admitted that it had been a while since he had played, so this was never gonna be a classic! Although not at the levels of the games we have played in the past, it was still a decent match considering. It was pretty even early on with both players holding serve for the 1st few games. I managed to nick a break and keep my serve to stay in front. Stuart's natural angle from the left hander puts a lot of pressure on your backhand and after a ropey start I managed to start hitting reasonably well on that side, even managing a couple of winners. 2nd set followed a similar pattern and I held on for the win. Cheers for the game as always Stu!"  -- Paul

Group Summary:

A fantastic set of match commentaries really brings this group alive - thank you. And what a debut performance from Mark who was unbeaten in the round. He didn't have it all his own way though as Chris and Stephen both took him the distance! For Stephen we hope that is some consolation in a round where he was unlucky not to win a match, and for Chris this was the match that provided the point allowing him to edge ahead of Sam in the points race. Great tennis everyone!

Player Comments:

  • "In a fairly rainy encounter in a slippy not much running was down by either player for fear of injury. The first set started tightly but Chris did not manage to close out games several times during the match, enabling me to pull away, especially in the second set. "  -- Mark Philipp
Reveal CommentMark Philipp Morgan bt Stephen Bowens (Aug 8) 4-6, 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive first set was won by Stephen with ever consistent return shots and making use of his home advantage. I then grew more confident in my game, in two sets that were closer than the score suggests, with many games going to deuce. There were some really good rallies and Stephen made me work hard for the win"  -- Mark Philipp
Reveal CommentChris Stanworth bt Stephen Bowens (Aug 4) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking game with Stephen on a very warm Sunday afternoon at Beverley Park. Close and competitive games throughout. I started strongly in the first but Stephen pulled his way back into the set and it took a couple of well timed lobs on key points to just edge the first set. Stephen was very consistent in the second set and was able to get 5-1 ahead and despite a bit of a comeback he saw the set out 6-4. My first serve improved a little in the third which maybe helped me take the final set with even a rare ace served up - typically followed immediately by a double fault! Cheers for the game Stephen"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentSam Donovan bt Chris Stanworth (Aug 1) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A lot closer than the score suggests, Chris was unlucky with a number of net cords that didn't fall his way unfortunately for him. In the end my third match of the week meant my serve was a lot more consistent than it normally was. Good luck for the rest of the competition Chris. "  -- Sam

Player Comments:

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMark Philipp Morgan bt Chris Deeney (Jul 23) 6-4, 1-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An interesting match of tennis on a very hot afternoon. Bot players struggled with the heat and sun leading to possibly more unforced errors than usual. After a slow start being 4:0 down in Set 1, Chris came grew into the match and took the second set by storm. A third set resurgence with more consistent shots, serving and a cool head helped me edge it. "  -- Mark Philipp
Reveal CommentMark Philipp Morgan bt Sam Donovan (Jul 22) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very good and evenly fought game. The wind made an impact on the game but still a good workout. Congrats to Mark-Phillip who was more consistent when it mattered! "  -- Sam
Reveal CommentChris Stanworth bt Dick Curran (Jul 20) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game in tricky weather conditions at Souter Park, with a wet court after a rain shower and just as the court was drying out by the second set the heavens opened again! A closely matched opening to the first set saw us tied at 3-3 before the game, before I was able to get my nose in front and go on to see out the first set. The second set turned into a slightly strange version of extreme tennis as we carried on to complete the game after a short but very heavy downpour, but still well worth seeing it through! Cheers for the game Dick"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Chris Stanworth (Jul 10) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A close, lengthy match played in the early evening . I have played Chris several times before and our matches are always close but- prior to this one- with him coming out on top - on this occasion I made fewer errors than previously and managed to close out the first set 6-3. The second set was nip and tuck and could have gone either way largely going with serve - at 6-5 with Chris serving looked like we were headed for a tie break and also when I lost two match points but luckily just managed to squeeze out the third one . As always with Chris an enjoyable game played in good spirit over nearly 2 hours "  -- Peter
