Three new players this time and judging from the matches, the foundation for many good round to come. Player Comments:

  • "After cancelling games scheduled during storm Ciara and storm Dennis, this game finally went ahead at the third attempt. Typically, the conditions were blustery but we did our best during difficult conditions. There was a lot of tight games and it was good to eventually get the game played. Well done Lucy on your first league game and good luck in thr remaining games. "  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to complete this match yesterday due to the weather. Luckily, the rain stopped and the sun came out so we met at 1400 to play. Steve put me into serve first and I quickly went up to 40-0. However, Steve hid some good returns to come back and break me. I was able to take the following 3 games taking the set to 4-1. From there, we stayed on serve with the set finishing 6-3 to me. Steve started the second set in a similar fashion as the first by taking the first 2 games. I started to find serving rhythm and fought back to take the score to 3-2 and finally finish the set 6-3. Had many games to deuce with Steve making me work hard to finish the match by saving 2 match points. "  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "First time playing at Beverley Park. Nice location and pleasure to play with Stephen. Lots of the games were close and it could easily have been much tighter as was the case when we played a fun third set. Look forward to playing with Stephen again and joining the club. "  -- Steve

Group Summary:

How frustrating for David who in his fist first ever round, gets trumped by bonus points. Now it is actually extremely rare that you play all your possible matches, win them but still lose the group because another player has earned bonus points. But the secret to our champ's success is that Craig won a point for the set he took off David in what was easily the most exciting match of the group! Numbers permitting both players will get promoted next time and whatever happens, a round of applause to you both!

Final Rankings:

  1. Craig Taylor [W3, L1] 9 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. David Campbell [W4] 8 RUNNER UP
  3. Peter McCue 9.2 [W1, L2] 3
  4. Dave Lee [W1, L2] 2
  5. Dimitrios (Dimi) Farmakis 10.2 [L4]

Player Comments:

  • "A match which started back in early February but the match had to be abandoned then due to heavy rain with Peter leading 2-1 . We eventually managed to reconvene on 10th March and while the rain stayed away - just about - this time the match was played in a howling gale!! Exhibition Park is always windy but this was at another level with the ball hooping about every time it was in the air and serving being difficult with the ball blowing even when being thrown up!! Dimi is a really nice guy and the wind caused some comical points with players missing the ball altogether at times! Inevitably the match was somethign of a lottery but very enjoyable none the less and Dimi and I will defintiely play agian both in and out of the league"  -
  • "I will always remember the interminable matches we played, especially the adverse weather we faced; many thanks Peter. I will definitely seek for an opportunity to play you in normal climatic conditions..." -- Dimi

Player Comments:

  • "Peter and I finally managed to get our game played after many attempts to find a gap in diaries, plus affect of terrible weather. Even tonight it was touch and go but we were rewarded with enough time to play our match and a friendly third set. Thoroughly enjoyed the game. Peter got the shot of the match. Really nice chap. Many thanks."  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely to play indoors again and avoid the hurricane outside. First time I’ve met Dimi - seems like a really nice chap. He told me he is a bit out of practice. Every now and again he left me standing with a wicked forehand cross court shot."  -- David
  • "I will always remember the one and only unceasing game which took place after our match ended; many thanks David" -- Dimi

Match of the Group:

David Campbell bt Craig Taylor (Feb 8) 6-1, 5-7, 6-1
Reveal CommentDave Lee bt Dimitrios (Dimi) Farmakis (Jan 24) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Dimi and I enjoyed a good game at Beverley Park. After a break from tennis for a while Dimi showed some very consistent serving and a wicked forehand. Dave has had the luxury of playing quite a lot over the winter so found his rhythm earlier in the match. There were some tight games including one mammoth game where deuce was reached about 20 times and Dimi and I wondered if we were going to get finished before it got dark! Dimi is a really nice fella and we will certainly play again, and perhaps arrange a doubles game with some of the other members of the league. Good luck for your remaining matches Dimi and hope to see you at B Park soon! Cheers Dave "  -- Dave
  • "I will always remember the collaborative & positive spirit you showed on the terrain Dave, regardless of my bad day performance, appreciated," -- Dimi
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Dave Lee (Jan 23) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a much more evenly balanced contest than the final score might suggest, with a number of very long games where advantage passed back and forth many times. Dave started brightest and stormed to a 2-0 lead almost uncontested. At that stage it looked to be a very one sided tie. However, Craig began to dig deep and very much against the run of play, managed to pull back to 2-2. Luck and a number of unforced errors led to Craig closing the first set 6-2. A similar pattern of play led to the same result in the second set. The match was played in a good spirit in, at times quite chilly and windy conditions. Both players expended considerable energy covering the court during some excellent long rallies. Overall, a cracking match. "  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Dimitrios (Dimi) Farmakis (Jan 22) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another glorious, blue sky, sunny day at Beverley Park, with the temperature over 10 degrees in January. The match was actually much closer than the final score would suggest, with many games going to Deuce. Despite it being Dimi's first tennis match in ten years, he played some excellent shots, particularly a sharp, cross court forehand return which secured a fair few points. On this occasion however, the luck of the bounce and net cord favoured Craig who was both relieved and surprised to win by such a margin. The match highlight was Dimi's exuberant celebration on winning a game in the second set. A great morning for tennis and a very enjoyable match. Thank you."  -- Craig
  • ""I will always remember the continuous & endless deuces; many thanks Craig," -- Dimi
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Peter McCue (Jan 20) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely, bright and sunny afternoon at Beverley Park Tennis Club. Our first game of the new season and new year was inevitably patchy at times with both players enjoying good spells and not so good periods of play. The low winter sun was a key factor making serving and receiving from one end quite a challenge. After a hesitant first set, Peter found his form in the second, racing to a 5 games to nil lead with Craig scrabbling around to try to keep in it. Despite pulling back the next 4 games, a sequence of unforced errors gave Peter the set 6 - 4. All change again for the deciding set, which followed a similar pattern to the first, ending 6 - 1 to Craig. An excellent and enjoyable January run out. Look forward to the next match. Cheers"  -- Craig
