Player Comments:

  • "Played this b my arch in some slightly sloppy conditions which meant rallies weren’t as long as I suspect they would have been had we played in the dry. First set was decided by a single break. In the second set, breaks were limited and Ron saved a total of 6 match points before I managed to finish the match."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentSimon Pound bt James Addy (Oct 15) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to meet James and we had a quick match in some questionable evening light. The first set started even going 2-2 before I broke and win the rest of the set. Continued in a good Rythm in the 2nd set and managed to finish before the light went."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentRob Jones bt Paul Quinn (Sep 21) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Game was played in good manner with both players getting some good shots in. The Jones surve was a thrat though out the sets but Paul did play some great shots himself but he just couldn't get into the game. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentSimon Pound bt Anthony Hendon (Sep 20) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match against Anthony at Richardson dees. Some good rallies throughout the match and we played a fun third set afterwards. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentSimon Pound bt Paul Quinn (Sep 18) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to meet Paul and we were lucky that the weather was perfect for tennis. Despite the shoreline we had some close games with some very good rallies. We played a fun 3rd set and teamed up to play a doubles match afterwards against another couple at the courts. Our 3 set warm up served us well and we won the doubles together!"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentRob Jones bt James Addy (Sep 17) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "With a nice evening to play tennis there was two different types of players Rob and his hard hitting serves and James and is soft hand approach. With the first set all in the way if Jones due to James still trying to get into the game Jones took advantage of this and took the first set. The second set was a different story and James broke the strong Jones serve twice to keep in the game and with some lovely shots played did cause Jones some problems, but with Jones still hanging in he went on to take the second set 6-4. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt James Addy (Sep 15) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A game with many enjoyable rallies in which both players hit some really good winners. Ultimately the fate of the match was determined by the serve. Paul was relatively consistent but James struggled to find his rhythm which became his undoing. Despite this game being the first that James had played on this surface he quickly found form on his forehand in particular. He showed great fitness and athleticism which led to some long and interesting exchanges. The first set was more even than the score suggests and at 3 all the second set could have gone either way. This was yet another fun game played in good spirit that could have gone either way. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentAnthony Hendon bt Paul Quinn (Sep 14) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A real tussle that was close all the way, with Paul exhibiting the skills of a real tennis all-rounder. Anthony was able to rely on his groundstrokes to take the first set, but suffered a dip in energy and form in the second set, ground down by the long rallies (and hot and humid weather!). Paul kept his form - and versatility - up and deservedly levelled the match. The decider saw a fair few breaks of serve, as had the earlier sets, but at 4-4 it was Anthony who managed to win two games in a row. A fine clash in which the players covered a lot of court and produced some exhilarating exchanges involving overheads, tight angles and lobs. "  -- Anthony
Reveal CommentRob Jones bt Anthony Hendon (Sep 12) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The game was played in very windy conditions and Rob seemed to mange this the better when it came to back hand spin and with this the big hitting serve which caused problems throughout the games. The game was not all Jones as Anthony played some good shots and in the first part of each set the games where pretty even and only when Jones broke in each set did he pull away. On a good flat say it would be a good game to play again."  -- Rob

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentJames Addy bt Anthony Hendon (Sep 4) 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A match that had pretty much everything. A contrast in styles, upper-hand swings and 3 seasons of weather. At 4-3 in the first set it looked like the match would have to be abandoned due to rain but this subsided and we waited around for the pitch to dry. Despite a bad fall for both of us we battled through to finish 6-4 in a close set. The pitch dried up in order to set up a thrilling second set. Andrew quickly took up a 4-1 lead only for James to come back to 5-4 and serving at 40-0. This chance was squandered and Andrew fought back to break serve and win the tie break with relative ease. The third set was closer than the score suggests but a few stronger serves helped towards the quick finish of an otherwise enthralling game."  -- James

Group Summary:

An impressive run from Craig saw him win 5 matches and earn midway bonus points to finish 4 points clear at the top of Group 2. Runner up Louise's only defeat was to Craig, an "absolutely cracking game which was much tighter and more competitive than the scoreline might suggest" and there was a hard fought win for Derek who dug in to win the second set tiebreak against Antony.

Player Comments:

  • "It was great meeting and playing Antony for our league match, really enjoyed it. Set 1 was a little unfair on Antony as I had been at the free coaching session before hand and was fully warmed up and ready , so 6 1 was a little misleading. Set 2 was epic in all senses, Antony raced to a 2 nil lead, i pulled it back so we were back on server at 3 3 , stayed I then moved into a 5 4 lead and was serving for the match only to be broken. Some excellent winners from both of us and then to 6 6 , we were both excited to play a tie break which again had some excellent points , but I managed to see it out at 10 4 . Can't wait to do it again. D "  -- Derek

Player Comments:

  • "After a few failed attempts due to work and illness we managed a late Friday afternoon match. The weather held up if not a few gusts of wind here and there and the sun setting making serving a little difficult at times. Cait played her usual consistent serving game although the first 4 games went against serve, Cait started to put her connsistency to good use and took the first set. Set 2 stayed mostly on serve and set 3 Caits consistency went a little off track, some great shots from both players and good hustle around the court. Another good game with Cait and I look forward to the next one. D "  -- Derek

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed the game. Lovely evening and lots of great rallies."  -- Louise
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Antony Cairns (Oct 2) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good early start - 9.30, on a bright and crisp autumn morning at the glorious Beverley Park. Inevitably, both players took a while to wake up/warm up but very quickly both got into the swing of the game. Some excellent and entertaining long rallies and decent winners from both sides. As ever, the final scoreline doesn't really reflect the overall balance of play and Antony certainly deserved to win more of the games. In the end, the match was probably decided by who made the least unforced errors. A cracking runabout on a beautiful morning. Great stuff!"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentLouise Tupling bt Cait Cairns (Oct 1) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely evening of tennis with Louise. Plenty of deuces and long long rallies but far too many frustrating double faults from myself. Louise’s superior fitness, excellent court coverage and consistent play finished me off pretty convincingly. "  -- Cait
Reveal CommentLouise Tupling bt Peter McCue (Sep 29) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed this match. Epic long rallies and lovely evening. "  -- Louise

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentCait Cairns bt Antony Cairns (Sep 28) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cairns versus Cairns always had the potential to be a close run race. In perfect tennis conditions I managed to win the first set largely by luck. Antony’s serve became more consistent to take the second. The third set was dominated by fatigue and unforced errors (there were plenty). The result could easily have gone either way with us only being separated by 2 games for the entire match. Lots of great rallies and exciting points, looking forward to more matches this week."  -- Cait
Reveal CommentLouise Tupling bt Derek Place (Sep 26) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed the game despite the challenge of the extremely windy conditions. Certainly blew the cobwebs away. Look forward to playing Derek again in the next league."  -- Louise
  • "As i am not having much chance of winning games, best be poetic in defeat! With the wind whistling up from the beautiful view of the North Sea, Louise handled the conditions and game far better than me. Louise had some lovely winners zipping past me and a very consistent serve. The better player won out on the day and i look forward to playing in better conditions and being beaten without the weather as an excuse. Well Done Louise, deserved victory." -- Derek
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Louise Tupling (Sep 19) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Absolutely cracking game which was much tighter and more competitive than the scoreline might suggest. A lovely bright morning at the newly refurbished courts at Rockcliffe, overlooking the North sea. As the match progressed Louise got stronger and more confident as her superior fitness began to grind her opponent down. Desparate to avoid a third set, Craig somehow scrabbled to a largely undeserved victory. Extremely long games featuring some monumental rallies took their toll on Craig whereas Louise completed the match as fresh as she started. A great match. Thanks."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Cait Cairns (Sep 18) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Once again, another glorious morning for tennis at Beverley Park. Blue skies and sunshine and not a whisper of wind - perfect! We enjoyed an excellent game which at times felt like an exhibition match with many fifteen and twenty shot rallies, plus a number of zippy little winners from both players. Cait had chosen to cycle to the venue, which was very impressive in view of the running she did throughout the match. In many respects it was a pity that someone had to win but the balance of the result was probably determined by unforced errors. A cracking game and a fantastic way to spend a sunny mid September morning. Thanks a lot "  -- Craig
Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Derek Place (Sep 16) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable game played on a warmish summer evening -neither of us had played at Rockcliffe before which is a nice venue right on the promenade. Derek has not been playing tennis very long and has lots of power and some great shots and there were some good rallies and the difference was often down to double faults as Derek tried to get his serve right and when he did it was very good and powerful and with more practice am sure he will improve a lot but I managed to see this one out "  -- Peter
  • "Good to meet Peter last night, it was a bit better than the score suggests, a lot of deuce games and if I had a consistent serve who knows. Good game Peter and cant wait to do it again." -- Derek
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Peter McCue (Sep 15) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "What better way for a couple of retired gentlemen to spend a sunny September afternoon than a well matched game of tennis. As ever Peter brought the glorious weather with him and the setting was perfect. Peter stormed into an early two games to nil lead, as Craig struggled with his serve and ground strokes. However, Craig soldiered on and gradually crept back into the match aided by numerous lucky mis-hits and a loss of form from Peter. The final score certainly does not reflect the balance of the game which , ever contained many tightly contested deuce games. Overall, a cracking afternoon. Cheers."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Derek Place (Sep 12) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The second meeting of these two players after an enjoyable encounter in the previous round. A very pleasant September afternoon at Beverley Park which offered excellent playing conditions for a pretty good match. The scoreline doesn't really reflect the competitive nature of the match, with a number of deuce games and many tenaciously fought points. In the end, Craig perhaps showed a little more consistency which enabled him to edge the result. A good match. Cheers."  -- Craig
  • "Another good game with Craig, much better conditions than last game and a little closer than the scoreline shows (i think!)" -- Derek
