Reveal CommentSandy Duncanson bt Chris Murtagh (Jul 22) 6-1, 5-7, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Chris. A good competitive match which could easily have gone either way. Special thanks to Chris for putting up with me snapping a string on my racket halfway through our match and picking up later on!"  -- Sandy
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Steve Carpenter (Jul 22) 0-6, 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was some match. We have played several times before and Steve has beaten me every single time. However, I had heard a rumour that he was carrying a slight injury so looked forward to a promising opportunity. Somewhat disappointingly, the injury didn't seem to cause Steve much trouble in the first set as he skipped around the court and took it 6-0! This was a very long match with very long rallies and virtually every game settled after a persistent pattern of deuce/advantage/deuce, etc.. The competitive nature of the match perhaps began to take it's toll on Steve's injury as he surprisingly lost the second set 6-1, though he again rallied in the third set and started to sneak up on an initially convincing 4-1 lead. Good match."  -- Craig

Reveal CommentGareth Clark bt Greg Fearon (Jul 17) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "We braved a relentless sun, a tricky breeze and heckling kids to finish this one. A tight first set swung this way and that as we both made more errors than winners; the second fizzled in the midday heat as the sun took its toll. A fun game in baking conditions. "  -- Gareth
Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Sandy Duncanson (Jul 16) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very hot evening at Richardson Dees Park. Enjoyable match lot of games going to deuce Sandy played well ,look forward to playing him again"  -- Peter

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentSandy Duncanson bt Craig Taylor (Jul 15) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful evening for tennis at Souter Park. Our first set was much, much tighter than the 6-1 scoreline suggests, with almost every game going to deuce. Craig had me running all over the place in the second set as well with his lovely slices, but thankfully I managed to take control of the game. An enjoyable match and looking forward to the next one."  -- Sandy
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Chris Murtagh (Jul 13) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was our second attempt to complete this rounds match after our initial encounter ended in a draw (4-6, 6-3). We have also played a few times over recent months with the scores and results getting closer and closer. As ever, Chris brought the weather with him as the Souter Park courts were once again bathed in glorious sunshine. Chris took the first game relatively easily on serve. The second game however, lasted around fifteen minutes before Craig eventually edged the win. From then on Chris struggled to play to his usual standards and the match gradually slipped away from him. Nevertheless, we enjoyed some good rallies and a number of decent shots from both players. A good evening of tennis. Thanks."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentSandy Duncanson bt Greg Fearon (Jul 13) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really good to play Greg again. Our match was pretty tight, especially in the second set with a lot of games going to deuce. A lovely day for it as well. Looking forward to the next time."  -- Sandy
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Greg Fearon (Jul 11) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The day of the Wimbledon men's singles final and the final of the Euros ( England v Italy). This result would undoubtedly have been different if Greg hadn't already played a two hour match immediately before this one! Despite that disadvantage Greg still played with considerable energy and attack and was unlucky not to have won a greater share of the games. A very hot day at Richardson Dee's and a really enjoyable tennis match. Cheers."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentMatthew Office bt Gareth Clark (Jul 11) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Gareth and play on another warm day - a tighter game than the scoreline suggests."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMatthew Office bt Craig Taylor (Jul 10) 7-6 (7-4), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Craig - thanks for the match and introducing me to Beverley club! An incredibly tight first set played out over an hour in baking heat, ultimately decided by a tense tie-break - a real battle of the backhand slices with neither of us wanting to give anything away. After that draining first set, the momentum changed in my favour, and the second set was played out faster. Enjoyed the match a lot, great battle of a first set."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Gareth Clark (Jul 10) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet Gareth. A damp Saturday morning but enjoyed the match; match was closer than score suggests "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentChris Murtagh bt Gareth Clark (Jul 4) 6-0, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A fantastic match of epic rallies, 10-deuce games and (occasionally) pouring rain. The first set went by in a flash, apart from a never-ending final game that Chris slowly wrestled his way with ruthless precision; the second was a pretty taught affair that swung this way and that. After two hours of whacking balls that had soaked to probably twice their weight, myriad drop shots and heavy legs on both sides (albeit some heavier than others), Chris eventually steamrollered the third. A really fun match in tricky conditions."  -- Gareth
Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Chris Murtagh (Jul 1) 6-0, 6-0

Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Greg Fearon (Jun 28) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely evening for tennis. Enjoyed the match. Thanks Greg"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Gareth Clark (Jun 24) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Many thanks to Gareth for (I) initiating the match (ii) making the journey from Hexham and back to play. A very warm day but excellent conditions for tennis. Gareth admitted to being a little rusty and out of practice, a situation which Craig did his best to exploit mercilessly. The match was actually much closer than the final scoreline might suggest with many games going to Deuce. In fact, Gareth was improving and gaining confidence with every point. So much so that if we had played much longer he probably would have won."  -- Craig

Reveal CommentAndrew O'Sullivan bt Peter McCue (Jul 29) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A windy but sunny evening in Souter Park. The first set was won 6-0 which doesn't give justice to Peter. His ball placement was superb and had me running to all corners of the court. The 2nd set was much closer, with Peter taking a deserved 4-2 lead. A strong comeback saw me take the set 6-4. Thank you Peter, looking forward to our next encounter, hopefully in less windy conditions!!"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Kate Speed (Jul 26) 4-0, 4-1

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match in evening sunshine . Kate had to explain the short form system to me as had never played it before . As it turned out the format was significant because of the 9 games played I think 6 went to deuce of which I was lucky enough to win 5 of them on the single point shoot out system! As such this gives the final score a somewhat distorted look which did not reflect the play and Kate played some great shots including a wonderful ace which I got nowhere near! Thanks for the game Kate and introducing me to short form"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPaul Yates bt Peter McCue (Jul 17) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I got off to a solid start winning a few games in a row, but Peter continued to put pressure on me and push me around the court whenever I eased off, leading me to start making some errors and the momentum switched, with Peter grabbing 4 games in a row. After closing out the first set I managed to get another run of games, despite some close fought points and a couple of games going to duce, to take the second. Thanks for the match Peter"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Yates bt Derek Place (Jul 11) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "We were already warmed up from the tennis for free session beforehand so we got in to the game quickly. My first serve was firing well which helped a lot plus a few double faults and unforced errors cost Derek but we had some great competative rallys and some games to duce despite the final score. Thanks for the game Derek"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentAndrew O'Sullivan bt Derek Place (Jul 8) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely evening at Richardson Dees with the sun shining down on us. Derek played with an attacking style that saw him hit some beautiful winners past me. He has some great variety in his serves with a pacy first serve and a lovely spin 2nd serve. Unfortunately for Derek some of his more ambitious shots landed just out or into the net, otherwise the score line would’ve much closer. I thoroughly enjoy the match and look forward to meeting Derek again. Thanks"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPaul Yates bt Kate Speed (Jul 5) 5-4, 4-1

Player Comments:

  • "After a day of on and off rain the match was looking in doubt, but thankfully the skies cleared in time and the weather held, though the court remained slippery. We opted for a short format. A mix of breaks and holds of serve in the first set lead to a tie break, which finished 7-3. I was far from confident going in the the second set but managed to close it out 4 - 1 helped by a few drop shots and lobs. A great match that I thoroughly enjoyed, thanks."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentDerek Place bt Kate Speed (Jun 28) 5-3, 5-4

Player Comments:

  • "On a lovely and rather warm Wallsend evening an epic battle ensued! After Kate explained the short format rules to me......off we went. Service holds were at a premium and Kate really foxed me being left handed (never played a left hander before!) set one was off serve until game 7 when i managed to break and then hold (the first of the night). Set 2 followed a similar pattern and Kates' serve had me guessing and on my toes, i did manage some nice serve return winners. As we headed into a tiebreak both players were jaded due to the heat, to which i managed a fairly straight forward win. It was a pleasure to meet and play Kate, all the best for the upcoming games :) D "  -- Derek
Reveal CommentAndrew O'Sullivan bt Kate Speed (Jun 24) 4-0, 4-2

Player Comments:

  • "With matching racquets we knew from the onset that this was set to be a great match. Opting for short form sets, after a quick warm up we began. Kate had a 100% accuracy on her first serves in the first set, something which could not be said for me. A few luck drop shots on my behalf and some of Kate’s shots just landing out gave me the first set 4-0. The 2nd set was much closer with Kate hitting some lovely winners that I never had a chance of returning, including a beautifully placed smash. Leading the 2nd set 3-2, it looked destined to go to 3-3 as Kate took a quick 40-0 lead. But I held on to take the game to deuce and ultimately win the match. I thoroughly enjoyed our match which was finished just as the heavens opened. Thanks."  -- Andrew
