Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Alan Gell (Sep 7) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It's over two years since me and Alan last played in the league and, of course, quite a bit has happened since then! An absolutely glorious sunny September day at Beverley Park, providing the venue for this long awaited rematch. Alan has suffered a few injury problems and was a little out of practice, but he still showed flashes of his younger self with some excellent winners, all the best shots of the match. Frustratingly for him, he struggled to maintain consistency, and the match was probably decided on who made the least unforced errors. Whatever - we enjoyed the tennis on one of the best days of the year. Again, I look forward to the rematch, hopefully a little sooner than last time. Cheers Alan."  -- Craig

Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Kerry Dodds (Sep 2) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was Kerry's first ever match in the league and a good and enjoyable one all round - Lovely venue at Collingwood looking out towards the sea and the weather was kind and mild . Lots of good long rallies and tight games and plenty of deuces and points ebbing and flowing . Somewhat flattered by the final score as not much in it all along and Kerry produced some great winners and touch shots . Kerry, best of luck in your other league matches ...........am sure you will enjoy them!!"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentCOLIN THOMSON bt Kate Elliott (Aug 29) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very close match with Kate which really could've went either way. Holding serve definitely plagued us both, with each person stronger on returns. Reveal CommentJonathan Fellows bt Sandra Collins (Sep 15) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really fun match! First time playing on the Collingwood surface, which was enjoyable to get to grips with. Close start to the match, with Sandra battling back to 2-3. Sandra also hit the shot of the match at the start of the second, with a lovely forehand slice return winner. Look forward to playing again sometime!"  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentJonathan Fellows bt Steve Taylor (Sep 11) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Steve kindly accepted the invitation to play this match at short notice. A titanic tussle ensued, amidst blustery coastal conditions. The first set was closer than it appears, with plenty of long deuce games and Steve demonstrating brilliant athleticism around the court. Neither player could buy a serve in the second, with 8 breaks in a row before I was finally able to hold and follow up with a break just when it mattered. A thoroughly enjoyable match, although I was pleased it didn't go to a third as the sun and wind combination was punishing and Steve could easily have nicked it on another day!"  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentDavid Quinn bt Sandra Collins (Sep 10) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "My top tennis strategy prevailed again - make sure you're the first person they play in the league! This was my fourth match so far and I think that was the difference. Sandra has a vey good game with most of the points being (too) long with a wide variety of shots played, but my more recent match experience saw me through. I was also helped by Collingwood being a slightly slower court, made even slower by some light drizzle. Unsurprisingly, the slower the court, the faster I look. It's a mirage. Now that more people have got at least one match out of the way, I predict some very tight games in this league."  -- David
Reveal CommentJonathan Fellows bt Hannah Swainson (Sep 8) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Scratching my head with this one, as the final result does not reflect what was a very competitive match. Hannah was striking the ball really well, and I got away with a few lucky shots. Set 2 started with an epic deuce game that was the longest game I've played so far. A few shots that landed just out probably made the difference. Good luck for the rest of the round, Hannah!"  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentDavid Quinn bt Kristopher Kilsby (Sep 7) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "When it's this hot and sunny you need secret weapons. After exchanging 4 breaks in the first four games I produced my first....sunglasses. It turns out not looking directly in the blazing sun actually does help your serving, who knew? With the sun hammering onto us, I produced my second secret weapon, a liter of Ribena....the drink of champions. To be serious, they both helped me deal better with the punishing conditions. Most of the first set went to deuce games and long rallies with a good variety of shots. A very enjoyable game. Next time we do it, I hope Wallsend is slightly cooler than the surface of mercury. Thanks Kris."  -- David
Reveal CommentJonathan Fellows bt Kristopher Kilsby (Sep 4) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Kris out on the coast! Second set more competitive than scoreline appears once Kris got his serve firing, with some entertaining rallies."  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentDavid Quinn bt Hannah Swainson (Sep 3) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable game. Hannah hadn't played a competitive game in ...ever, so was obviously a little hesitant to start off. But, as she found her form, the games got longer...and longer. By the second set she was getting her length and direction and so I'm very pleased I played her in her first outing rather than later in the league. "  -- David
Reveal CommentJonathan Fellows bt George Wright (Sep 1) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "After I took an early break, George fought back to level at 3-3. This set up a thrilling 7th game, which featured lots of extended rallies. The set then proceeded on a knife-edge and could have gone either way. I served to stay in at 4-5 and then managed to secure the break needed to take the set 7-5. Fatigue set in during set 2, which produced a misleading final scoreline. Good luck for the rest of the round, George!"  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentJonathan Fellows bt David Quinn (Aug 28) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Absolute pleasure to meet David and get under way! A beautiful afternoon on the coast was the perfect backdrop. The scoreline belies some great rallies and deuce games that were had throughout both sets. Thanks again David."  -- Jonathan
