Player Comments:

  • "Thanks to Simon for his patience with this one, as we had an extended break after the first set so I could deal with an injury! Overall the game was very close, with huge swings of momentum back and forth. Neither Simon nor I really felt we could commit to attacking shots, so there were quite a few errors caused by our indecisiveness. Thankfully I was able to find rhythm on my serve in the final set and close it out. Looking forward to playing Simon in the next round, at Beverley Park."  -- Sandy

  • "A fine morning at Rockcliffe and a first match with Craig in almost a year. The first set went by quickly but Craig took his fleece off and played like his old self in the second. There were many good rallies with a variety of shots. Craigs serve in particular was very effective in the second. Great to play Craig again in a good spirited match. Hope to see you in the next round. "  -- Chris

  • "Despite both players serving well at the start, the first 4 games went against serve. One more break of serve proved crucial for taking the set. In the second set there were longer rallies and some great volley exchanges close to the net with both players showing quick reflexes. Simon had break points on a couple of my service games which I managed to save and this proved decisive. Thanks for the game Simon."  -- John

The second set had many deuces and exhausting points with Mark seemingly never beaten we had some +40 shot rallies. I was very glad for having remembered to pack a banana. Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Simon for the first time and a very good game this evening at Rockcliffe. The first set was quite straight forward with many long rallies until the wind got up towards the end. The wind stayed with us for the remainder of the match and made serving and general ground strokes very interesting. Simon amazingly hit only one double fault throughout! I was lucky to get 4 games off Simon in the 2nd as I felt he was smashing everything past me. The third set saw some very close games which just went my way and I was delighted to see out the set as it had been a very exhausting match. Thanks Simon and good luck for your next games. Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Daniel Smith (May 4) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Match started in heavy rain which made conditions tough for both players, which the ball aquaplaning, especially on serves and the wet conditions making the bounce unpredictable. I started well despite this taking the first 3 games, but then Dan pegged me back to 3-3, only for me to take the next 3 games and the set. Second set was close with Dan having a chance for the second set serving at 5-4 but after a long game with several deuces, scores levelled again. A good service game by me made it 6-5, then another long game just went my way. A good match played in great spirits. I have to thank Dan for been willing to play in such conditions. "  -- John

This was our second encounter, in the North Tyneside singles leagues -the first, a three setter indoors at Churchill, saw a convincing and thoroughly deserved victory for Daniel. Despite the scoreline, this was a more even contest featuring some pretty good and varied tennis play. Drop shots, lobs, forehand and backhand winners, some really good hard fought rallies. Much closer than the score suggests, on this occasion the key points and momentum went my way. I look forward to our next match. Cheers."  -- Craig

In set 2 Dan changed tactics and had me running all over from his clever net play. My serve deserted me and Dan served it out. Set 3 followed the same pattern with Dan coming back at me to force a tie break. The watch says 2300 calories burned.. hope to play Dan again but not too soon! :P"  -- Chris

  • "Really good match played in some perfect weather. I got off to a fast start in the first set, but Gregory started to show a lot more consistency towards the end. The second set was back and forth, with one of the games going to about 10 deuces. A lot more consistency in his shots created some tough long games, which led to a bit of fatigue from us both. Very enjoyable match, and it was great to meet you Gregory"  -- Graeme

Player Comments:

  • "A very windy evening at Souter Park made for an evening of tricky tennis. Colin's serve was deadly accurate and very deceptive at times. All too many matches going to Deuce as we exchanged advantage back and forth. The finest of margins on some points would've made the scoreline much closer, the wind behind made even the gentlest of shots fly long of the baseline. Colin hit by far the most winners which left me wrong footed on many occasions. Thank you Colin, hopefully meet again in the next league."  -- Andrew

Set One was a battle of who could handle the beautiful sunshine and the wild wind best, for me, it was a on my side, a tight tight first set went to tie break and i was lucky to edge it 10-8! Set 2, Cait handled the wind better than me and her all round fitness started to get the better of me! Some EPIC rallies, some great shot selections had us both trying to get every all (apologies to the people in No1, you can have that ball on us!). We then had to relocate to Souter Park to complete set 2, a change of court, surface and poorer facilities took its toll on me. Cait adapted perfectly and hammered me 6-0 in the 3rd! EPIC"  -- Derek

It is always a pleasure to play Kate and she started strongly winning the first game - several tight games then followed and the match was very close and a lot of deuce games As the set progrsesed I managed to edge in front and take this 6-2. However there were a number of very good long rallies and Kate hit some good winners . Kate had run 11k the day before and maybe this took an effect in the second set though again the scoreline of 6-0 greatly flattered me and the set overall was much closer than the scoreline suggests . Overall a very enjoyable game and best wishes Kate with your remaining matches"  -- Peter
