  • "A really competitive match in very windy conditions. The first set saw huge swings in momentum as I went 4-0 up before Luke fought back to take it in a tie-break. Thankfully I managed to up my level in the second set as the wind died down. We rushed through a third set as Luke had a gig to get to. Looking forward to playing again when we don’t need to worry about time constraints or the wind!"  -- Sandy

  • "This was our second meeting. In the first match Chris’ deep looping forehands caused me lots of issues but I was more prepared this time! The first set was a back and forth affair with more than 1 break for each of us before I managed to close it out. The second set I was able to break early and closed the match out with some good serves. I look forward to our next match! "  -- Simon

Simon started very well, but thankfully once I got used to the court I was able to bring the match back in my favour. Thanks for the match Simon, looking forward to next time."  -- Sandy

  • "Great to meet Stuart and a very good game. First set should never have been 6-0 but so it was. Second set Stuart played great and made an excellent comeback much to my dismay: I was rapidly running out of gas. Managed to sneak out the last two games in a hard fought second set. Looking forward to playing again. "  -- Chris

  • "Always a pleasure to play Stephen, he started well and the score was on serve before I managed to break but Stephen got it straight back and took the set 7-5. The second set was another tight affair before I managed to break and snatch it 6-4. We had to have a 30 min break as the fort was booked before we resumed play and I was just consistent and took it 6-1. Good luck in the other games Stephen."  -- Luke

Player Comments:

  • "Another really good battle between Chris and I. I started pretty well to take the first set 6-3, then Chris showed his great tenacity and hit some brilliant lobs to take the second set 6-3. We were both running on empty towards the end of the third set, but thankfully my serve bailed me out and I was able to get the win. A great match, near enough 2.5 hours, and (according to Chris) 1,700 calories burned!"  -- Sandy

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game that was very close in the first set. As the ground was wet and the balls getting heavy, I broke into a new set of balls. Big mistake! Stuart proceeded to then smash me all over the court and took the second set easily. The third set then went completely the other way. Thanks for the game Stuart and good luck for the rest of the round"  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Alfie, from the off he made a strong start and managed to come back from a break at 2-0 me to take the first set 6-2. The second set was a good contest and Alfie served and volleyed brilliantly but I just managed to break and hold out to take it 6-3. The third set was another tight affair, I managed to break early but holding on was a challenge as Alfie put up a fight and took me to deuce a few times on my serve. A few lucky shots here and there meant I managed to hold out on in the end. A great match and I’m sure Alfie will only improve "  -- Luke

Thanks for the match Steve!"  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "My first time at Beverley, conditions were not perfect on the day as the wind decided to pick up. The first set was a close affair with Simon hitting some great serves and returns however I just managed to nick the break and hold. The second set was very similar to the first in which I was constantly under pressure to hold serve but just managed to be that little bit more consistent. Credit to Simon for a good match. • "A great match with Cait today in hot muggy conditions. It was a close match and could have went either way in a lot of the games. Luckily I managed to win some important ones which resulted in me edging the sets. Loads of long rallies and some great tennis all round, thanks Cait I really enjoyed our match. Good luck with your hockey!"  -- Phil

Player Comments:

  • "The game scores don't tell the full story of this one. About 80% of the games all went to deuce with many of them taking multiple deuces to secure the win. Unfortunately for Phil, he was carrying a bit of an injury coming into the match which hampered him a bit, but there were many long rallies and games which could have gone either way. After just getting back into the game, it'll be great to play Phil again when he's at 100%. Thoroughly enjoyed the match. "  -- Graeme

Player Comments:

  • "Looking at both our matches with others in the group, this was always going to be close. Set 1 went with serve for the first 8 games. I struggled to even get a point on James’s serve and all my service games going to deuce. James does have a very effective serve but I can only think I got used to it as the game progressed and managed to break him in the 9th game to take the set. We had plenty of good rallies and deuces in the second set, especially in the 6th game when there must have been 7 or 8 deuces, glad i wasn’t serving for that one. All in all a great match - thanks James."  -- Cait

Player Comments:

  • "Very good match. Craig took an early lead first set before I brought it back to 6-6, having served for the set twice. I took the lead in the tiebreak and Craig saved two set points to bring that back to 6-6. Eventually I took it 8-6. I went a break ahead a few times but credit to Craig who broke back 3 times, saving a match point on my serve at 5-3. Eventually I got the decisive break to take the second set and match 6-4. Hope to play Craig and his tricky slice shots again soon. "  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Graeme in our 2 parter match. Started the Saturday previously in very warm conditions at Souter park. With the first set taking over an hour, seeing me claw my way back from 4-1 to 5-5 in the first but Graeme edging it with some great net volleys to take the set. At 2-1 in the second we were ejected from the court, and despite excellent efforts by Graeme to repair a net on a neighbouring court we had to admit defeat. Almost a week later saw us resume in distinctly cooler conditions at Beverley park. The home advantage didn’t seem to help me and although all but one of the games went to deuce I couldn’t seem to make any progress and keep up the excitement of the first set……"  -- Cait

Player Comments:

  • "It's a few years now since I last played Keith, who is returning to tennis and the league's for the first time in quite a while. All the old skills are still there, it's just that he is a little out of practice, so the shots are not as consistent as I remember. Nevertheless, we had a really good match in very hot conditions at Beverley Park, which tested the fitness of both players. There really wasn't much in it and the match was much closer than the scoreline suggests. I suspect if Keith keeps playing and practicing and regains his former fitness that it will be a very different story next time we play. A very pleasant Sunday afternoon's tennis. Thanks a lot."  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "Great game lasting over 2 hours! After the first 11 service games, 10 had gone to deuce and I had a 6-3 2-0 lead. Mark then reeled of 3 games on the spin (no deuces required) to lead 3-2. Eventually we went 6-6, Mark led the tiebreak 5-0, I got back to 5-4 before Mark won 3 in a row to take the set. After 6 games in the decider we were 3-3 with no holds so far, one of Mark's service games lasting at least ten minutes itself. I managed to hold to lead 4-3 and win the next two to take the match - a really enjoyable game @ Beverley - Cheers Mark! "  -- Daniel

  • "This was Phil's first match in the North Tyneside tennis league, and in fact his first game for several years. Nonetheless, the old skills were clearly evident and he continued to improve as the match went on. A very promising serve and strong forehand should have secured more points, as I feel sure they will in future games. A very pleasant Sunday morning's exercise in Beverley Park. Thanks a lot Phil and good luck for your other matches."  -- Craig

  • "Beautiful Saturday morning, with a few gusts of wind. Both of us struggled early, with some inconsistent strokes, but the quality improved as the match went on. Both sets were very even early, and I was fortunate enough to win a couple of key games in order to take the breaks required to win both sets. Nice to meet you James, and good luck the rest of the way. "  -- Graeme

Player Comments:

  • "The sky looked threatening but thankfully the rain didn't materialise, so we were able to complete the match as planned. Cait has certainly been working hard on her tennis game and there was a marked improvement all round since the last time we played. In fact, Cait was by far the livelier player taking the initiative and lead in both sets. The key game was at 4-2, where it looked as though Cait was going to take a 5-2 lead, but I somehow managed to scramble back. Some excellent rallies where Cait executed a number of sneaky successful drop shots and lobs which had my head spinning . A very enjoyable match played in excellent spirit. Thanks a lot "  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "We have played each other quite a few times now ( Too often, Mark might say!), and the matches are always really close and competitive. For once, the conditions were perfect - a sunny 22 degrees with no wind or rain to use as an excuse. A very cagey first set which probably could have gone either way, but Mark showed greater consistency and determination to take it 6-4 after around an hour's play. That consistency gradually swung my way for the other two sets as I began to claw my way ahead and actually hit one or two winners. As ever, a really enjoyable match played in good spirit. Thanks Mark."  -- Craig

I ended up 5-1 up second set but again Graeme broke me back when serving and held to make it 5-3, I fought off a couple more break points to eventually serve it out 6-3. Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive and enjoyable match. In spite of not playing much tennis recently, Mick started very quickly, serving well and finding some great angles on his ground strokes to comfortably take the first set 6-3. He continued his good form into the second set, taking an early 3-0 lead. At the change over, I commented to Mick that this would be a good comeback, not really believing that I had a chance. I then started to serve a lot better and hitting my ground strokes with more consistency to take the next 6 games to win the set 6-3. At this point I had the momentum and sprinted into a 4-0 lead in the final set, but Mick came roaring back to take the next three games and put me under pressure, but I managed to just fall over the line."  -- Jim

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match played in breezy and slippery conditions at Collingwood. A strange first set where I won the first two games, lost the next five and then came back and won the next five to take the set. The second set was, despite the score, still competitive, with many tight games and some good rallies. Greg really struggled with the underfoot conditions, as there was a lot of sand on the court which meant changing direction quickly was particularly treacherous. It was a pleasure to meet you Greg and good luck with your remaining matches."  -- Jim
