Reveal CommentSandy Duncanson bt Peter Orchard (Oct 16) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really difficult match, as the windy conditions made it challenging for both players. I started well to go up 4-0 and win the first set 6-3, before Peter came back to go up 4-2 in the second set. I was just able to fight back to close out the second set 7-5 with some heavily wind-assisted winners. Thanks Peter."  -- Sandy

Player Comments:

  • "A great match and good to meet Steve. I struggled to adjust to Beverley and Steve took advantage to go up 4-1 the first set, I managed to bring the set back to go to a tiebreak then Steve took it as he was more consistent. The next set was another long and brutal affair with each player taking games one after the other before I squeezed it 7-5. I had to be away soon and the match had already taken 2 hours for two sets, so we played a final tiebreak and again I just narrowly took it as I was more consistent. Good luck Steve and see you next time "  -- Luke

Player Comments:

  • "Always a great match playing Dan, the first set was a tight affair with breaks of serve each way before heading to a tiebreak where Dan was just more solid. The second set i managed to regain composure and grind out a way to take the set. Heading to a final set me and Dan were both showing signs of fatigue and this was evident in the 3rd game where dan had many game points to take a 3-0 lead. I managed to fight back to 2-2 all then i just managed to win the more important points and took the set. Cheers Dan, i'd imagine i'll see you soon."  -- Luke

Player Comments:

  • "This one was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Steve was up 40-15 or better in 3 of his first 4 service games, but I kept battling away and raised my level on big points. Just one of those days when every shot hit the lines! "  -- Sandy
Reveal CommentLuke Walker bt Simon Pound (Sep 19) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great match always playing Simon, he played well the first set as both of us were struggling to maintain serve. He found his form and took it 6-4. I managed to find my consistency as the match went on however and I just edged it getting the bigger points when it mattered. Great to play you Simon and I’ll hopefully see you soon."  -- Luke

Reveal CommentSandy Duncanson bt Simon Pound (Sep 18) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Simon and I are very evenly-matched in terms of skill level and we play quite similar styles, so it’s often very close and competitive when we play. We both played at a very high level in the first set with some great rallies and winners. Simon started sets 2 and 3 really well (3-1 up in both), but thankfully in that third set I was able to recover and eventually close it out. Thanks for the game Simon "  -- Sandy
Reveal CommentLuke Walker bt Stephen Bowens (Sep 14) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great match in tricky conditions. Wind was heavy and the sun was blinding on one side of the court for the first set, Stephen played some great shots using this to his advantage however and took the first set. The next two sets were hard fought and I just managed to get the bigger points. Cheers Stephen and have fun in the remainder of games. "  -- Luke
Reveal CommentSimon Pound bt Stephen Bowens (Sep 11) 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "This was a very bizarre match between Steve and I with wild swings of momentum. I cruised to the first set 6-2. Steve broke early in the second set and didn’t look back until he was up 5-1 in the third set! I was luckily able to gather my composure and put the pressure back on Steve by winning five games in a row. I was able to get some early breaks in the tie break to finish off a long competitive match."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentStephen Bowens bt Steve Carpenter (Sep 6) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a local derby at Beverley Park with us both being members. The ground was soaking and the balls heavy which didn’t suit either of our games but we battled on regardless with the light fading. We’ve played each other countless times and this was one of those very rare occasions when I came out on top. I’m sure the natural order will be restored next time we play. Cheers Steve "  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match against Steve at Beverley Park. It was a back-and-forth first set which I ended up taking in a tie-break after 8(!) consecutive breaks of serve. Thankfully I was able to find my serve more consistently and take the second set as well. Thanks Steve, hopefully we’ll play again soon."  -- Sandy

Reveal CommentPhil Kirton bt Peter OHara (Oct 12) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to get our match played today Peter. The conditions were sunny but rather breezy. The wind took its toll on the game, making serving and ground strokes difficult to judge resulting in us both making perhaps more unforced errors than we may have. Nevertheless, some fine rallies were had and once Peter warmed his serve up I struggled with the returns. It was a close first set where I fortunately managed to edge the key games to get my nose in front and take it 6-3. With the wind, I played more of a safe game than usual in the second set focussing on getting the ball in the court, which lead to less unforced errors and points won. Happy to get over the line in the end. Good luck Peter hopefully we meet again in the next round"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Jim Maguire (Oct 9) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A very friendly and good natured Sunday lunchtime in a game that was much closer that the score would suggest. Jim was a bit tight in his shoulders and that impacted on his serve and consistency within points. When he relaxed he hit many excellent shots and won points with big winners. Jim is still relatively new to tennis and his game will improve in leaps and bounds as he has more hits adn gets more confident in his game. Well played jim and lovely to have met you. - Paul "  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet and play Phil on a nice Sunday morning. A very tight first set that really could have went either way. The second set had a few more errors from both players but I just played the percentages to stay ahead. All the best with your next match Phil. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Peter OHara (Oct 4) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Difficult, windy conditions for both players to contend with, but a surprisingly warm October morning at Beverley Park. A frustrating encounter for Peter who is clearly a much better player than this scoreline might suggest. As the match progressed he began to find some rhythm and consistency with his serve, in particular, so if we had continued and played another set he would probably have won. A very pleasant morning's exercise and a game played in great spirit. Thanks a lot."  -- Craig

Reveal CommentPhil Kirton bt Jim Maguire (Oct 2) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful day and setting for a game of tennis, and our match didn't disappoint with some hard hitting rallies and great winners being made. I fortunately managed to come through a few important points/games which were close, being rescued by a few big serves here and there which helped get this one over the line. A highly enjoyable match, thanks Jim and good luck mate with your remaining games. "  -- Phil
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Stuart Milne (Sep 26) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Over two hours of full on tennis with some excellent rallies and every point keenly contested. Stuart's serve is a real weapon but he lacked consistency on it in the first set. However, he found his rhythm and hit some very powerful shots. Both players gave everything and kept going despite a heavy shower. A pleasure to play in a game that could easily have gone either way."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Phil Kirton (Sep 25) 7-5, 3-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really good tussle with both players enjoying streaks of winning games. In the first set I won the first 4 then Phil won the next 5 before I won the next 3. Phil’s serve was the dominant shot of the second set and he looked to have the momentum going into the decider. However, I had a little but more consistency in the decider which was a lot closer than the score implies. Phil is a recent returnee to the sport and he will improve in leaps and bounds as he gets more games. A really enjoyable game that could have gone either way."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Peter OHara (Sep 24) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A much closer game than the score might suggest. Peter's serve improved markedly during the match while Paul's got worse which led to a lot of very close games. Some tricky conditions with sun and wind being factors. Thoroughly enjoyed meeting Pater and playing for the first time and I look forward to meeting him again on court soon."  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet and play Jim on a nice evening at Collingwood. The match was pretty back and forth at times as we both struggled with consistency and to hold serve. I managed just to land a couple more shots each set, in an entertaining match. Thanks for the match Jim and good luck."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Phil Kirton (Sep 14) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really interesting match this, which illustrates the issues of consistency and confidence which many tennis players at our level struggle with. Phil freely admitted that he is still just getting back into tennis and he lost the first four games largely through his own mistakes. However, at 4-0 down, just as I had started to think about an early lunch, his game kicked in. The big first serve started to land, ground strokes from either side started to drop just inside the baseline and a few cheeky drop shots came off, pulling back to 4-3. At the same time, I started to panic - double faults, over and under-hitting, so that it was with some relief and good fortune that I eventually took the set 6-4. The reverse happened in the second set!!???"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Craig Taylor (Sep 12) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Craig. As always not much between us but I was a little more consistent than Craig on the serve and that was enough on the day."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Jim Maguire (Sep 10) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "We just managed to avoid the September rain which came down before and after the match. Excellent setting for this contest at Collingwood Tennis Club in Tynemouth, a beautiful location for a really good game. Much closer than the final score would suggest with the majority of games played to Deuce and beyond. This was a good match played in great spirit with a number of hard fought rallies and many winning shots from both players. A cracking way to spend a Saturday afternoon in the Autumn. Thanks a lot."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Stuart Milne (Sep 5) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely late afternoon at Beverley Park with Summer still very much in evidence in early September. We hadn't played each other before, so the match began a little hesitantly as we tried to find our feet and our rhythm, but we soon got into our stride with some excellent rallies and winning shots from both players. As is so often the case, at our level, consistency is the key, with the player making the least number of mistakes / unforced errors taking the victory. This was a really good, competitive match, where yet again, the eventual scoreline does not really reflect how close it was."  -- Craig

  • "Weather was a bit windy today, not an easy day to play a match. There were some excellent serves and shots from George. A few points/rallies were of top quality and covered the entire court. Since it was my local club, I knew the court well and the conditions. I used a lighter racket for my tennis elbow and that lead me to a comfortable victory."  -- Vishwa

There were a few aces and good placement shots. Unfortunately a few net shots and double faults from Mick's side won me more points. I tried to hit the ball as hard as possible but most of the times it kept coming back to me and I had to play more rallies. I managed to win the match but if we had played the third set, the result may not have been the same. It was a good match. :)- "  -- Vishwa

Reveal CommentVishwa Kumba bt Jake Clark (Aug 28) 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "The skills of both the players (myself and Jake) appeared to be similar. I was primarily a doubles player trying to get into the singles game. Jake mentioned he was primarily a singles player and is getting back into the game after a long break. I felt I had a better serve than Jake, especially with my new heavy tennis racquet and new tennis balls, while Jake seemed to have a better foot work and game. As I did not have much experience playing long singles matches, I had become tired and my standard seemed to fall after the first set but I kept playing somehow and managed to win the match. It was a good singles match. Looking forward to another match with Jake again in the next round. "  -- Vishwa

I won the first few games but then Greg found his range and came back strongly and I was very relieved -and a little lucky- to just close out the first set 6-4. Greg again started the second set strongly and got a lead which I managed to peg back and then it was topsy turvy and eventually got to a 6-6 tie break . There were some excelllent long rallies throughout and our playing styles are quite similar. In the tie break I was lucky to get over the line 7-3 -Overall one of the best games I have been involved with in the league and hope we can play again soon - Good luck with your remaining games Greg"  -- Peter
