Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Stephen as always. A freezing night on which we only had an hour on court so okayed fast 4, in hindsight this was a decision both men were happy to have due to how cold the court was. A good match with lots of great rallies and points in which I managed to nudge at the end. Thanks Stephen and see you next time."  -- Luke

Reveal CommentStephen Bowens bt Vishwa Kumba (Dec 2) 4-1, 4-3 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet and play Vish for the first time at The Northumberland Club in Jesmond. Vish is recovering from an injury so wanted to play at fast format game. I took the first set then once Vish got into his stride the second went with serve. We only had the court for an hour and time was running out so once the second set got to 3-3 we played a tiebreaker to 7. That was as tight as the second set and I just managed to edge it. Thanks for the game Vish and looking forward to playing again in another round. Cheers "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentStephen Bowens bt Stuart Milne (Nov 30) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Stuart again but this time on a bitterly cold night under the floodlights as t Forrest Hall. I took a 3-0 lead in the first set but Stuart battled back well to make it 3-3 with some excellent drop shots. I managed to see the set out then take control of the second but Stuart never gave up and battled till the end. Thanks for the game and see you in the next round. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentStephen Bowens bt Craig Taylor (Nov 27) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game with Craig as per usual with his running commentary on the game. Conditions were perfect at Beverley Park and I went 5-2 up in the first set before a spirited comeback to make it 5-4 but I managed to see the set out. The second set was a different matter. Lads, I’ve found his weaknesses!!! Arrange to play at midday so he can’t eat beforehand then mention a bacon sandwich halfway through. He lost all concentration and couldn’t stop thinking about it. Thanks for the game mate. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentLuke Walker bt Vishwa Kumba (Nov 27) 4-0, 4-1

Player Comments:

  • "I had requested a fast4 format as I had recovered from a recent injury and did not want to play for more than 90 mins on the court. Luke has a strong, deep moonball, heavy topspin shots. I struggled to return most of them. His rally shots were high and deep with excellent footwork, I tried to go into the net a few times but Luke managed to find the gap to hit winners. There were a number of deuce games on my serve but Luke seemed to obtain a comfortable victory at the end. We played for nearly 70 mins. "  -- Vishwa
Reveal CommentVishwa Kumba bt Craig Taylor (Nov 26) 7-6 (8-6), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Day 1: I was 4-0 in first set but Craig soon started breaking my serves. Craig is truly a wizard of spin shots. I struggled with his forehand, backhand shots and slices. We played nearly 3-4 deuces in every game and soon, we were 6-6.. A double fault during the tie-break gave me the edge and I won the first set. We had played for nearly 80 mins and stopped to resume another day. Day 2: This time, I focused on my serves and deep return shots, used the idea of Wait and Hit to handle Craig's spin shots. A few strong, deep shots and me moving over to the net quickly to finish the weak returns as winners obtained me a comfortable victory(6-2). It has been a pleasure playing with Craig, look fwd to playing with him again in the new year"  -- Vishwa

Player Comments:

  • "Always an enjoyable match against Peter at Beverley Park and for once I managed to edge it. Apart from the second set which flew by, most games went to deuce over and over again. Thanks for the game Peter and good luck for the rest of the round. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentDaniel Smith bt Stephen Bowens (Nov 19) 6-4, 7-6 (12-10)

Player Comments:

  • "Great game at Beverley this afternoon. I broke first but Stephen broke back to 4-4 before I eventually saw it out in the last 2 games both going to deuce. I broke first in the 2nd set leading 2-0, but Stephen broke back again to lead 3-2. There were no more breaks of serve in the match which took it to a tiebreak. I led the tiebreak 5-1 and 6-4 but Stephen saved the match points well and eventually had a set point or two of his own before I eventually saw it out 12-10. Cheers for the game and good luck for your remaining games."  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to play Gareth again. Some good rallies throughout the match"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentDaniel Smith bt Luke Walker (Nov 14) 5-7, 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "The world's slowest tennis balls made for exceptionally long points. Luke won 3 straight games from 4-5* to take the first set before I was able to get the first HOLD of the 2nd set in its 8th game, eventually seeing it out 6-4. I took a 3-1 lead in the 3rd but Luke brought it back to 3-3 before the people came up and locked the courts. (For future reference Churchill closes 8 on a Sunday) TBC"  -- Daniel
  • "Same slow balls were used for continuity. Game restarted with 5 straight breaks, I was finally able to serve the last game out with 4 straight points from 15/40 down to take it 7-5. Really could’ve gone either way at the end."  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Stuart Milne (Nov 13) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Close match played in good spirit. Lot of tight games went my way"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentDaniel Smith bt Vishwa Kumba (Nov 10) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good game on the red clay at Northumberland club in tricky windy conditions. Vishwa fought back from 5-2 down first set to 5-4 before I was just able to serve it out by saving a couple of break points. Vishwa started the second set well too taking a 2-0 lead. Eventually I was just able to win the important points and win 6-4 again. Cheers for the game and best of luck in future matches?"  -- Daniel

  • "Great match today with Greg. We got lucky with the weather as it was very wet before we played but it held out! We had some really close games and great rallies. The second set could have gone either way but I clinched a decisive fifth game to make it 3-2 and continued momentum from there. "  -- Jake

  • "Played first thing in the morning at Cullercoats, in pretty chilly and blustery weather which made things challenging and tricky for both. Some good rallies none the less and an enjoyable game. "  -- Richard
Reveal CommentPhil Kirton bt Louise Tupling (Nov 24) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good to get our match played today on a quite nippy and overcast day. After the recent rainfall the court was wet which resulted in the ball really skidding fast after the bounce which made it hard for both players to time the shots, luckily for me this worked to my advantage I think as it made my serves difficult to deal with. Overall an enjoyable match, its not getting any easier to fit the winter matches in what with the general lack of indoor and floodlit courts available in the area, so good to get this done. Good luck Louise "  -- Phil
Reveal CommentJake Clark bt Richard Hammond (Nov 20) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic match with Richard today at Churchill. The first set was really close, with lots of breaks, long rallies and deuce games - I think our fourth game went to deuce about 10 times! Towards the end I managed to win a few games in a row and close it out. The second set was very closely fought with Richard going 5-3 up. I managed to bring it back though and win a few on the bounce again to get it back to 7-5. Some awesome shots from Richard and a very fun match overall. Look forward to playing again next time! "  -- Jake

Player Comments:

  • "Good match today with Peter, the score line doesn't tell the story, we had many long rallies with many games going to deuce. Decent conditions although a slightly slippy court with the recent rain so both players had to be cautious. Good luck Peter "  -- Phil

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match, played at Collingwood on a beautiful autumn afternoon. Louise and I played a lot of deuce games, interspersed with some good long rallies and three nice aces from Louise. Looking forward to our next game Louise and good luck with your future matches."  -- Jim

Player Comments:

  • "Great to get our match played today on a freakishly warm November day. We played at Crawford park but to be honest the courts there are quite poor, making it impossible to judge the bounce. Nevertheless we had some good rallies and really enjoyed it. Good luck with your remaining games Greg."  -- Phil
Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Gregory Bignot (Nov 12) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was the third time Greg and I have played and like the other two a very enjoyable match played in a great spirit . The match also followed the pattern of our two earlier meeetings . This was the first time Grag had played tennis since we played in a previous round a few months back and this helped me to take the first set - Gregs game improved greatly on the second with fewer unforced errors and there were also 3 memorable rallies with Greg winning the first two with some amazing recovery shots . At 5-4 in the second set we had the third of these great rallies which I managed to win and held on to take the set 6-4 - Had I lost that point and that game to go to 5-5 Greg may well have gone on to win as he had increasing momentum"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPhil Kirton bt Richard Hammond (Nov 9) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking game of tennis with Richard today in lovely conditions. A very close match which really could have gone either way, fortunately I managed to edge the first set and gain that all important momentum going into the second set. The second set was a lot closer than the score line suggests, with many of the games going to deuce. Some great (and some bizarre) rallies, with Richard playing some lovely forehand winners throughout the match. All in all a very enjoyable match, good luck with your remaining games."  -- Phil
Reveal CommentJake Clark bt Mick Paterson (Nov 8) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable match against Mick. We had some long and close games with great shots by both. Blustery conditions made it quite difficult at times! Cheers Mick. "  -- Jake
Reveal CommentJim Maguire bt Mick Paterson (Nov 6) 5-7, 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable match against Mick, that was very similar to our earlier match, as Mick came from 5-3 down to take the first set 7-5. At the changeover, I mentioned to Mick that I’d won 10 games in a row in our first match and, to my amazement, I did it again, to take the second set 6-0 and put me in a strong position in the final set, which I managed to close out 6-2. Looking forward to the next one Mick."  -- Jim
Reveal CommentPhil Kirton bt Jake Clark (Nov 4) 7-6 (7-3), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really close game today with Jake, on a blustery day which caused both of us problems judging the ball bounce. You can see by the score the first set could have gone either way, fortunately for me I managed to pinch it, and I think that momentum helped in the second set as I managed to go on a bit of a run to ultimately secure match. Happy to get over the line in the end, my legs were gone! Good luck for your remaining game Jake."  -- Phil
