Reveal CommentDan Smith bt Peter Orchard (Oct 9) 7-5, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Very tight game that could've gone either way due to two tight sets. I served for the first set at 5-4 but Peter broke, but I eventually saw it out 7-5. In the second Peter got the first break to deservedly lead 4-2 after some great drop shots, but I did manage to break back and save a set point at 4-5 down myself to eventually lead us to a tiebreak. Peter was next to save a set point this time for the match at 5-6 in the tiebreak but I was just able to see the game out just as the light was starting to fade."  -- Dan
Reveal CommentStephen Bowens bt Francisco Benitez (Oct 8) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This is the second time I’ve played Francisco and it’s always a competitive match but played in great spirits. We actually played this over 2 days as we ran out of light at 6-4 4-1. The wind was tricky on the first day but there were no complaints the second with perfect conditions. Pity we only ended up playing 2 games to finish the match off. Consistency was the deciding factor as ever and there was a lot of tight games. Looking forward to the next time. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentFrancisco Benitez bt Jake Clark (Oct 8) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Credit to Jake for the fantastic tennis he's displayed despite the result! It was a nearly perfect morning for tennis with heavier than usual courts due to the rain fallen overnight. I won the toss and decided to serve which proved wrong as Jake started with a break. Then, a succession of games full of long and intense rallies that I managed to take by a very narrow difference. At the start of the second set, Jake raised his consistency and intensity and made it extremely difficult to me until we reach 3-3. Fortunately, a very convenient break let me lead and see the final set out. I look forward to playing Jake again in the upcoming rounds!"  -- Francisco
Reveal CommentLuke Walker bt Peter Orchard (Oct 7) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Always a good match with Peter, the first set was a steady affair where I first went 3-0 up only for Peter to keep me on my toes and get a break back and it to go 3-2 which meant I had to keep my concentration and focus on keeping the break which I did taking the set 6-4. The second set began and the rain came down but we played on and Peter ended up breaking to go 0-2 up. Many games had consistent spells of rallies but in the end I managed to squeeze back the break and won the bigger points to take the second 6-4. See you next time Peter and thanks as ever for the good match."  -- Luke

Player Comments:

  • "Very good to meet Jake at last and an excellent pace of play meant we got finished up before night closed in. Jake was finding great depth and angles on his shots and had me back in the bushes or around the fences a lot of the time. Excellent rallies throughout. He led both sets before I managed to keep things fairly uncharacteristically steady towards the end. See you next time Jake! "  -- Chris
Reveal CommentDan Smith bt Jake Clark (Sep 30) 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great game at Churchill this afternoon. Jake started very consistently and took the first 6-2, and broke to lead 2-0 in the second. I fought back and served twice for the second set, but Jake broke me twice and was 4-2 ahead in the tiebreak at the change of ends. I was able to be more consistent from this point, winning the tiebreak and the following set. Good luck in your remaining games, cheers."  -- Dan

Reveal CommentSimon Pound bt Dan Smith (Sep 28) 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Another long three set match with Dan. At 2-2 we both lost the ability to hold serve and the server lost every game until it was 4-5 to Dan and I managed to win 3 games in a row. In the second set Dan raced out to a 4-0 lead and finished the set strong to take it 6-2. The 3rd set was another close one with lots of breaks. Dan had the chance to serve for the win at 6-5 but I managed to break and take the tie breaker. Great game and happy to break a 4 match losing streak against Dan. "  -- Simon

Reveal CommentLuke Walker bt Stephen Bowens (Sep 23) 5-7, 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A cracking match against Steve. The first set was a good level affair and Stephen was returning very well, he served to make it 5/6 then broke me and took the set. The second set I managed to play more consistent and I took it 6/2. The last set was very topsy turvy, Steve broke me early to go 1-3 up and then I broke back and brought it to 3-3. I then broke Steve and was 4-3 up before he took two games in a row which left me serving to stay in at 4-5. Steve played well and managed to actually get three points in a row making it 0-40 and three match points to him. I dug deep and somehow managed to bring it back and take the game. I then broke and took the set 7-5. Great to play as ever Steve and see you next round!"  -- Luke

Reveal CommentDan Smith bt Stephen Bowens (Sep 21) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A close game as the score line suggests, with spells of dominance for both of us at times. I broke in the first game but Stephen rallied and was able to win 4 games in a row, losing just one point in the process. I came back to level at 5-5 and just managed to sneak the set. I started the better in the second set and served for it at 5-2, with Stephen eventually breaking back after a long deuce. Stephen held then saved a MP on my serve to break again and bring us level. Again I just managed to break and sneak the set - thanks for the game and good luck with remaining matches. "  -- Dan

I came back and forced a tie break where Chris got another mine break and was up 5-4. I managed to win the next theee points to take it. 2nd set was again a close affair with several breaks before I managed to win 3 games in a row to take it 7-5"  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "Great match against Simon, he started very strongly and broke me straight away, he then mantained his level and took the first set 6-2. The second set I started with a better level and managed to break before Simon brought the break straight back. There was a load of great play and points before the set went to a tiebreak which was a fair result on both players. In the tiebreak I managed to hit a little bit more consistently and take it 7-3. The final set Simon managed to break and went 2-0 up but I kept myself in the rallies as both our legs were going after the long games and fought back to take it 6-2. Credit to Simon for a great match and enjoy the rest of your matches!"  -- Luke

Reveal CommentChris Murtagh bt Francisco Benitez (Sep 13) 6-2, 5-7, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet Francisco for the first time. The first set was played in good time however the light rapidly faded in the second we called it a day in the pitch black at 5-5. We returned on Friday and Francisco continued his great run from Wednesday to take 5 games in a row. In the lashing rain and strong side wind it was nearly impossible to hit a winner with verrrry long rallies on most points. In the end the Irish conditions smiled on the Irishman and I was very glad to see the end of the set. Well played Francisco. We’ll hopefully get a game in the Spanish conditions next time! I broke early in the second, but Chris broke back to make it 4-4. I served the set out 6-4 after a long deuce and some epic rallies going either way. Luckily I’m the 3rd set tie break I was able to get some early breaks and then hold my serve!"  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "A decent, if cloudy October Sunday morning at Beverley Park. Thankfully the threat of rain held off. I had vainly tried to conceal the slight knee injury I was carrying. However, once Cait noticed the limp, she ruthlessly sought to exploit the advantage with a variety of sharply angled cross court slice winners, plus a good number of sneaky drop shots! The match took two hours to complete, either because of the long competitive rallies or due to the extensive discussion at end changeover. Both players served consistently well with Cait recording the only ace of the match which left me floundering and flat footed! As ever, a really pleasant and enjoyable match played in great spirit. Thanks for the game Cait."  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "A long, long difficult and challenging match, which lasted almost three hours to play just two sets. Monir was certainly a tricky opponent who made things very difficult and frustrating, so I was relieved to take the second set as a third may well have finished me off! We were lucky to play the match in lovely, warm and sunny conditions, despite it being the 1st October. Thanks."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Mark Morgan (Sep 28) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really competitive, intense and hard fought match with the advantage swinging back and forth between both players. We both served pretty well but struggled to hold our own service games, particularly at the beginning of the match. This improved significantly as the game went on. Some excellent long rallies and decent winning shots executed by both competitors saw most games settled at deuce. A very even first set could only be decided on a tie-break. The second set appeared to be going the other way as Mark upped the tempo and went 3-0 up. However, the looming prospect of a third set focused my resolve and I somehow managed to overturn the deficit and sneak the result. Phew! Cracking match. Cheers."  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful, warm and sunny autumnal afternoon at Beverley Park. Excellent conditions for a great game of tennis. Both players had their moments and if a few key points had gone the other way, it may have been a whole different story. As it was, the match was decided by who made the least number of unforced errors. A very enjoyable match played in great spirit. Cheers."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentMonir Ahmed bt Keith Wood (Sep 17) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Keith won the toss and decided to receive. He played with strong forehand and there were long base line rallies. I was able to hold serve and defended well which resulted me getting the set 6-0, a bagel. Second set started with strong serve and devolis forehand from Keith. Unforced errors started to crip in from my side but I was able to lead the set 3-2. With increased consistency and defensive skills I was able to hold my serves. Several double faults did not help Keith and he was not able to capitalise some breakpoints. I was able to get the second set too 6-2. An enjoyable outdoor tennis, thanks Keith. Hope to play again soon. "  -- Monir

Player Comments:

  • "It was a lovely sunny day, a perfect weather condition for tennis. Alan kept me under pressure with his consistent returns. A double fault was a gift to him to level up the first set 2-2 at the beginning. I was able to hold my serve and capitalize breakpoint which allowed me to get the first set 6-2. I was able to maintain consistency in the second set and took it 6-0. There were many deuces played with long rallies. Many thanks, Alan. "  -- Monir

Reveal CommentMark Morgan bt Alan Patterson (Sep 7) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was the kind of game of tennis where the vast majority of my shots just about hit the lines while Alan did not have his best day. That we were matched more closely than the scoreline suggests became more evident when we played another friendly set, after the match was finished, as we still had the court. My level slightly dropped whereas Alan found another gear and he won the friendly set 6:2. Good luck for the next few games Alan and I am looking forward to a rematch soon."  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "A great game of tennis on a hot and sunny day. Most games went to deuce, which meant that the match lasted almost 3 hours. After losing the first set, Monir rallied back in ferocious fashion to take the second set by storm. However at the start of the third set Monir started to struggle with severe leg cramps. These got progressively worse and meant he had to retire with the score at 1:4 in the second set. Who knows how the third set might have gone had Monir been at full fitness. Good luck for the rest of the matches!"  -- Mark

  • "Surprisingly the much forecast rain held at bay, allowing us 2 sets of hard fought tennis. Entertaining 1st set with plenty of rallies but I managed to keep the unforced errors to a minimum to see it out 6-3. Mark upped his game in the 2nd set forcing the pace with wicked forehands and some excellent serve and volley tennis. In purely defensive mode I managed to hang in and sneak the set. Definitely relieved it didn't go to a decider. "  -- Jonathan

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful, sunny Sunday morning at Beverley Park. Ideal conditions for tennis, though a bit hot at times. A really good competitive match which was much closer than the final score might suggest. Almost all seventeen games went to deuce with the advantage swapping both ways many times. The second set was particularly interesting as Keith, starting to hit his first serve more consistently and playing a good number of excellent forehand and backhand winners, took a well deserved 4-1 lead. However, I somehow managed to scramble back into the match to take the set 6-4. A really good match played in great spirit. Cheers."  -- Craig
