Collapse AllNorwich Parks Singles - Round 20 | Thursday 15 June 2017 to Wednesday 9 August 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 12 July 2017)

The summer season was in full swing in Norwich in this round. An excellent 85% of matches were played, most players went home with their bonus prize and the majority of matches were accompanied with a generous commentary highlighting the wonderful spirit in the league. Thanks for all your efforts and we hope to see you all next time!

Group Summary:

A very close call for the group one crown with Guillaume, Lloyd and Christopher all finishing level on twelve points apiece. Guillaume and and Lloyd both prevailed from their matches with Christopher to make it ultimately a two horse race for the title. Unfortunately we didn't see a head to head between the top two and therefore a few calculations are required. The congratulations go to Guillaume who records his second title on the bounce thanks to fewer sets conceded. Great to see our prize department kept busy with nearly every player earning their bonus points.

Paul was convincingly leading the first set but I managed to fight back at the end to take it. In the second set I was leading 5/2 but Paul managed to up his game and even it up. We went in to a tie break which I was leading 5/2, then Paul won the sportsman award. He hit a volley which I couldn't get close to. I assumed it was in but he declared it out himself. At such a crucial point in proceedings! This is what tennis is about. Suffice to say we both had a great match, and there were two winners. Player Comments:

  • "Andy has a good and consistent serve; when he's in the mood he also plays a very nice forehand cross court loop. Where are you Rafael Nadal? The first 2 sets were played in balmy conditions; both of us conceded to having had a few liquid pre-match meals the night before. For me, today was all about getting the ball over the net, something Andy is pretty consistent at. A very low % 1st serve and abysmal return came back to haunt me in the 1st 2 sets, confidence waning as a result and reaffirming the idea that match tennis is often mental, consolidated by errors and the odd late night! These were ironed out in the 3rd set, played a week later + a few extra sets for fun. Cheers Andy, good game. Overall, close contest, good rallies and banter."  -- Jonny

In the second set Sam attacked the ball valiantly often smashing it deep and powerfully to the baseline. There was no safe tennis or slicing here, total respect. So both of us were well and truly cooked before we started. Each set lasted about an hour with Jonny taking a bit of time to get into his service game which was probably the difference in the first set plus a few too many unforced errors. In the second set Jonny went 3 games up to love, the heat was getting worse and we were both running out of water. I managed to even at 3 all and to take the set 6-4 in the end. It was a very hard fought match with many games in the second set going to long deuce games. Thanks Jonny a pleasure tp play against."  -- Andy

Simon has so much potential; he could be a real force on the court - he hits the ball extremely well, but currently lacks consistency - I suspect that this will come with more match time. As it was, my more consistent, if less spectacular, game was enough on this occasion but it will be interesting to see how Simon's game develops. Thanks for the game Simon."  -- Nick

Group Summary:

Ed finished with the best stats of the round but in a competitive group such as this, this wasn't quite enough to claim the crown. Adam won one match fewer but added excellent scheduling skills to his game too boost his points tally, and crucially he battled his way to the second set in his three set defeat to Ed, and this gave him the extra point he needed to edge into the lead. A special mention to Lee who showed fantastic commitment to get all seven of his matches played.

Adam gained the upper hand in the first set as result. In the 2nd set Olive changed tactics to great effect and used a high ball game + coming to the net more restricted Adam to being on the base line. There were some really good rallies and Olive showed good movement around the court to dig deep to keep pushing every game to a tight conclusion. In both sets Adam had to come from behind. Lee covered every square inch of the court with his constant running. a key area of play which determined the key points was the net play. Both player were very clinical and had good success hen they moved to the net. the second set could have gone either way and to be fair was a cruel way to end a very combative match which both player had changed tactics throughout the match to adjust to play. Richard made full use of the court and displayed some real magic. The high point of the match was the first 2 game which Richard regrouped and played shot perfect tennis. This match will be remembered as the match which no hold of serve could be made. We were both poor. Adam struggled with an injury which was tried to the limit by the angles Richard layed on early in the third set. The next 2 sets were incredibly tight, Ryan became the stronger server in the 2nd and maintained pressure to level it a 1-1. I found myself 4-0 up in the 3rd, only for Ryan to fight back to 4-4 which led to very tentative play for the last couple of games which I thought Ryan's momentum would see him through to the match win. Andrew's tensed up (maybe the thought of a first victory in ages) at the beginning of the second set and Kelly seized a break. This made for a much better second set with some good long rallies and evidence of Kelly's strong backhand and, frustratingly, her use of lobs every time Andrew came to the net.
