Unfortunately Adam had to retire in the third set of a close match against Marie, and her other two wins were straight sets. Player Comments:

  • "Playing 1.5 hours for the first set indicates the length of the rallies. Marie used her excellent physical abilities to push Karl back to the base line, and only the short balls give a real chance to Karl to win a rally. Even the tie-break could not been closer. In the second set Karl went up to 4:1 while Marie was gathering some extra energy, which helped her to come back. Marie was keen to complete the match, but unfortunately there was no free court on this beautiful Sunday afternoon.Strong and talented young lady. Karl"  -- Karl

Many thanks Pierre and best of luck for the rest of the league."  -- Richard

Neither player got into the groove of the match until the tail end of the 2nd set. The last 4 games really opened up the court and tactics really came into play. Adams net play and smashes were on form. Alan dug in deep to have a charging come back in the 2nd set but just as he hit some top quality form and nicked set/match point. He has a great serve which has an amazing kick. there was a lot of creative play throughout the match. Great long rallies throughout the match but one moment stands out. There was one key point in the second set which stands out, where all the coffee shop viewed lobs, slices, smashes, running off the court with amazement and both players shock hands after it. It was a match where both players had chunks of domination and once the tide turned it was difficult to regain the flow. A real gent which plays this game in a style I could only dream of having. • "An amazing match that had everything from hugely enthralling rallies to Ed's deadly passing shots. Ed stormed into an early lead by commanding the first set with an impermeable service game. The second set was a much tighter affair with both players initially holding their serves then swapping breaks, then eventually Tadgh narrowly secured the second set 6-4. All to play for the final set/tiebreak. There was nothing given away easily in this tiebreak with both players struggling to get a clear lead and it really was tit for tat all the way to the finish where Tadgh eventually pipped Ed to the finish line. Player Comments:

  • "This match ended due to poor light and both players agreed to play a tie break up to 7 as a decider. Ed won the tie break 7-2. I was a great match on a nice cool evening which Ed got out of the blocks early and completely whooped Adam in the fist set with fine pin point hitting of the ball. It was won with great ease. Adam had to battle hard in the second set moving Ed around more and making for a tightly contested second set which Adam just scraped by winning set point after trying for 9 times! There was good variety of shots and action around the court and light was getting poor. So we decided on the Russian roulete of a tie break which Ed was able to claim his well earned win. Good luck to the rest of the group, Ed is on top form!!!!

Group Summary:

Well done to those of you who claimed your midway bonus points and congratulations to our group winner Stefan who achieved 4 wins and no defeats, twice coming from a set down to win in 3 sets (against Mark and then Richard). • "Good match against Andrew under the sun. Match started very close, but I tried to make Andrew run quite a bit around the court which seems to have paid off. A few very powerful serves from Andrew. Enjoyed a nice rally session after the match too. Will be happy to play again."  -- Jerome
Reveal CommentHarry Seddon bt Jon Vila (Oct 8) 6-3, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "It was good of Jon to play after working last night into the small hours and the outcome was my most enjoyable match of this round. I tried to concentrate on just getting my shots in, and quite often did so with pretty pathetic sliced returns, often quite short. I suspect that (like me in some earlier matches) Jon found this harder to deal with than if I'd been hitting the ball harder and longer. There were quite a few good rallies and the occasional cracking shot, with half the games going to deuce. I probably had the better of it at the net, but even so the match could so easily have gone the other way but for a few tie-break points. Thanks, Jon. "  -- Harry

Player Comments:

  • "Luckily, I think I played Stewart at the right time, this being his first match for a while. Technically, he is a better player than me but his game was still a little rusty although he did play many outrageous drop shots which he seemed to play from any position on the court. After a slightly one sided first set, Stewart took a 3-0 lead before I fought back to take the match. Really enjoyed the match - thanks Stewart! Good lluck with your remaining matches."  -- Andrew

Reveal CommentHarry Seddon bt Andrew Butcher (Sep 30) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was not so much a game that I won, but one that Andrew threw away. We were at a very tight 4-3 in the first set when Andrew descended into a sort of despondent mood that led him to give away point after point without appearing to try. By the time he got over it, the damage had been done and I just had to close out the last few games. After my abject mauling at the hands of Julie, I wasn't going to complain! Andrew is a friendly chap who wears his heart very much on his sleeve and before the game he told me that he was really keen to win, to secure promotion. All of goes to show (in case we should ever forget!) that tennis is a game played against oneself as much as the opponent. And it is never over until it is over!"  -- Harry

Player Comments:

  • "I consider Julie one of the most difficult but friendliest opponents in the league. Today confirmed that. Whatever I tried Julie returned it. When I came to the net she lobbed me, when I stayed back she wore me down on consistency. At the end of the day the match was turned by me winning a few key points in our many deuce games. An enjoyable long match on a warm afternoon at Eaton Park. Thanks Julie. No doubt we will meet again."  -- Andrew

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was partly played in driving rain and hail, horrendous conditions for both players. I managed to go 4-1 up before Jon found his game and took a 6-5 lead. In worsening conditions, I levelled the match and scraped through on the tie break. The second set was played on a perfect sunny autumn morning and, thankfully, my consistent returns won through in a set much closer than the score suggests. Thanks for the match Jon," -- Andrew

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks to Andrew for having been very organised, so this was his sixth match and only my first. We played mostly under lights; where have the evenings gone? We were both a bit perplexed by the eventual score, which misrepresents what was an enjoyable - and pretty even - game. Afterwards we had time for a post-match knockabout, in which we each played much better strokes. Typical, eh?"  -- Harry

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Andrew. Like our previous encounter, this was a 3 set match - lasting 2 hours. Played on a still, damp evening at Eaton Park it was a mixed bag of tennis match which either of us could have won. Andrew raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set which I managed to claw back to win on a tie break once I started to get some first serves in. Justice prevailed in the second set where Andrew's better tennis and my poor service gave him a 6-2 win despite some close games. The third set was closer the score suggests and it shows that the better tennis doesn't always win through as I scraped the key points. Thanks for the game and the tips Andrew!"  -- Andrew
