Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match in near perfect conditions for tennis and certainly closer than the score might suggest. In spite of Roger W finding an extra gear at the start of the second set, it appeared to be heading to a similar score to the first. However, Roger W belatedly started to chalk up the games that he deserved as he began to consistently come out on top in a number of long rallies. I was certainly relieved to squeak over the line at 6-4. If it had gone 5-5 it could've been anyone's match from there. Player Comments:

  • "A high quality match with a variety of shots on display. A tight first set was edged by holding serve at a crucial time as both players gave up breaks. 2nd set swung in my favour after recovering from 4-1 down and just hitting the line with a drop shot, if that went out we would definitely have went to a 3rd set. In the end after saving some set points we went to a tie break and I just made it over the line. A thoroughly enjoyable match and a great performance from both players in a match that could've easily been won by James. "  -- Liam

  • "It was lovely to play against Roberto again, one of the league's real gentlemen. We played on a humid afternoon at Eaton Park with light drizzle making for slippery courts after the recent heatwave. The match was played in good spirits with some good rallies but both of us struggled to win our service games, particularly in the first set. Either of us could have won a close second set and in the second better consistency and the net cord saved me from a few of Roberto's rasping forehands. Good luck with the rest of your matches. Group Summary:

Congratulations to Opee for finishing top of the Group 11 table winning 6 out of 7 matches and a single point clear of Lynne in runner up spot. This was a busy group with everyone playing all their matches which is great to see! Yvonne had a strong round winning 5 matches but missed out on the midway bonus points, and her match with Lynne was tantalisingly poised at one close set all when play was sadly stopped due to Lynne's muscle strain... we hope you've recovered now!

Player Comments:

  • "it had rained we took a chance and started playing. The court was a bit slippy with leaves and Rowens fell, not hurt ,but a grazed knee, we felt it was sensible to stop then. But we will try and play this Saturday and finish the match."  -- Yvonne
  • "You can’t m afford to give a player like Mark a big start! So he eased the first set. Second set was much closer, but he thoroughly deserved the win. It’s testament to how much he’s improved from the last round too. Always great to play Mark. Well deserved win, and a top lad too." -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "We got on with the match quickly as the weather forecast was not great. A very evenly matched game. Unfortunately Lynne had a reoccurrence of an injury that had occurred in a previous match. Reluctantly we agreed that it was not sensible for Lynne to continue as she was in pain. Hopefully we will be able to complete our match at a later date "  -- Cathy

Reveal CommentMary Gillings v Rowena Alston (Sep 8) 7-5, 3-2 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "Rowena took the lead in the first set and Maria thought the game would be over quickly after playing earlier that afternoon. Somehow a burst of energy helped to pull back and then Maria took the lead in the 2nd set 3-0..However Rowena fought back and took 2 more games and by this point the lack of light meant play had to stop. Some long rallies and many deuces! To be continued "  -- Mary
Reveal CommentBeate Becker bt Mary Gillings (Sep 8) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A hot day in Eaton Park with equally steamy long baseline rallies including some crazy back facing the net rescue shots. We were rather equal players in style with games won quite often after several deuces. Mary never gave up on a shot and scored many points this way. I hope your fitness supported you in your other game that night, at least it must have been a bit less boiling, good luck for the rest of the matches, Beate"  -- Beate
Reveal CommentYvonne Ayliffe v Lynne Johnson (Sep 7) 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3) TBC

Player Comments:

  • "The match was very close , with each of us playing well ,then not so well and trying to learn and improve our tennis with aims in mind , which really helped us to try and hone into areas that we wanted to improve on. I was pleased to come back from 5-1 down in the second set to win the tie break. Lynne also came back in the first set as well from 3 games down. This was how close it was and see-saw . Lynne had a muscle strain and after 2 long sets we decided that if we needed to play the final set we could , otherwise we would accept a draw at this stage. We will see if we get the other games played, which has been difficult to do ."  -- Yvonne

Player Comments:

  • "A great, even paced game played in blustery conditions. It was a joy to play Cathy who played a solid game in challenging winds, it really could have gone either way.. My recent volley practice gave me a slight edge taking advantage of the slower balls played into the wind. Thanks for a great game Cathy and hope to play you again soon."  -- Marion
Reveal CommentBeate Becker bt Cathy Geary (Aug 29) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Windy game but as we had been early birds today with our match start we did avoid more rainy conditions later in the morning. The final score does not reflect the balanced games of which a lot went to deuce and we had some long rallies. If Cathy did not play a 3 setter yesterday I am sure my cards would have looked a lot worse. So nice to play you again, hope we might meet again in the women’s league."  -- Beate
Reveal CommentCathy Geary bt Rowena Alston (Aug 28) 6-7, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The weather was kind to us and this proved to be a very long and challenging match. Really both of us deserved to win as the match was so close with many deuce points and my inability to close the match out despite 6 match points. This is the first 3 set match I have won so I am delighted. However Rowena played really well and certainly won more points with winning shots. I think I just made fewer errors which is why I just managed to win. Good luck with your remaining matches Rowena.... Cathy "  -- Cathy
Reveal CommentBeate Becker bt Marion Arnold (Aug 26) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A fast paced enjoyable game with Marion today in blustery but dry conditions. We had quite a few exciting ralleys with Marion using a great variety of shots and showing amazing stamina only letting me know towards the finish that she had already played a double this morning lasting 2 1/2 hours! This would amount to more than 4 hours of tennis today!! Have a good rest tonight and good luck for the rest of your games. "  -- Beate
