Collapse AllNottingham Parks Singles - Round 17 | Thursday 14 February 2019 to Wednesday 10 April 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 13 March 2019)

Another excellent round in Nottingham where more than 70% of matches were played with many of these very closely contested too. Thanks for your efforts in continuing to make this league a success and we hope to see you next time for more tennis in the spring sunshine!

Group Summary:

There were gruelling matches left, right and centre in group one with Jake v Paul and Tristan v Nathanael just a couple of the highlights. Nigel was certainly keen to make an impression on his first appearance in the league, notching up five straight wins and bonus points to deservedly take the lead. Runner up Nathanael made sure Nigel didn't have it all his own way, forcing a deciding third set in an epic match hampered by "40mph winds, showers and low level sun". A shout to Jake who made it onto court for every match.

Group Summary:

The number of three set thrillers hit doubles figures in this very competitive group and it was therefore perhaps of little surprise that the race for the number one spot went right to the wire. Gilbert battled to five hard fought wins and this included an epic 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 victory over title rival Robert to finish as the new champ. Kudos to Stephen for inflicting Gilbert's only defeat in another marathon match.

Player Comments:

  • "Unfortunatly the match had to end early due to David suffering from injury. It was such a shame as the first set was a close one with David winning 7-5. David's net play was very strong which proved very effective against my unorthodox playing style. David was also able to give me a good run around on the court so I had to be on my toes at all times. 2nd set was close until David's injury deteriorated. I wish David all the best"  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentStephen Smith bt Howard Westgate (Mar 29) 4-6, 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I managed to get into a 3-0 lead in the 1st set, but Howard bounced back and snaffled it 6-4 in the end with some tough tennis. The 2nd set ebbed & flowed to 3-3, until I managed to pip a 4-3 lead and then close out from there 6-3. One set all, and game on. The 3rd set however didn't quite live upto expectations as an early 2-0 lead for myself saw Howard going for a few more shots, and thus more errors. In the end it finished 6-0, but I do feel I got stronger as the match wore on, as I got use to the surface. Tough match, and appreciate moving the match to outside court on such a fine afternoon."  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentStephen Smith bt Aaron Bowes (Mar 24) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Aaron is a tough & rather unorthodox opponent. The first set ebbed & flowed and ultimately proved crucial, as I managed to edge it 7-5. The 2nd set was similar, but Aaron was having to chase the game, and I was able to play more of a containing game to close it out 6-1. Thanks again to Aaron for coming over to ACLTC on a bright & sunny Sunday morning."  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "One player unbeaten at the top of the division, the other yet to win a match languishing at the bottom. And yet, in tennis anything can happen. Two contrasting styles of play saw technical ability versus older gritty doggedness. I managed to get off to a decent start through less unforced errors and took the 1st set quite comfortably 6-1. The 2nd set was a much closer affair, as Gilbert upped both his game and made less errors prevailing 4-6. In the 3rd set it looked very much like the younger, fitter, more technically gifted player only had to see it out, as he gained a 3-1 lead. But I don't like to roll-over & the 5th game proved quote pivotal. I managed to pip it to go 2-3, then 3-3. And then saw it out 6-3 for the win. Tough match."  -- Stephen
