Collapse AllPavilion Singles - Round 31 | Thursday 19 July 2018 to Wednesday 12 September 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 15 August 2018)

A very good effort this time resulted in an excellent three-quarters of matches taking place, group three managing all bar a couple. None of the three group winners had a clean sweep on the way to the top, with each losing one match along the way. In fact, the groups all look to have been strongly competitive with rankings often decided by bonus points and head-to-head victories. And as usual league players showed resilience in the face of difficulty, overcoming darkness, wind, rain and heat (not all at the same time, thank goodness) to complete their matches. An eventful and memorable round, so here's to the next one.

Group Summary:

Uche's head-to-head victory over Andrew made him runner-up under group champ John, who, despite being being beaten by, and equal on wins with Uche, earned two vital bonus point to claim the top spot. Dan's matches with John and Andrew were close-run events, as the scores reveal: John finally overcame Dan in their third tiebreak set and Dan forced a second set tiebreak against Andrew. Meanwhile, well done John and Andrew for playing more matches than the others. Not a single player comment from the group in this round, unfortunately. It doesn't take long to do and it really brings the matches to life and lets us know how things are going!

Group Summary:

Well done Thomas and Mariano for scheduling all your possible matches. And congratulations to Thomas for getting 5 wins out of 6 to top the group. The tie on 10 points between Benji and Anthony is resolved by the fact that in their head-to-head, Benji overcame Anthony in a "great match" that was obviously close judging by the second-set tie break. Benji thus claims runner-up position. Elsewhere, the group's pair of 3-set games both involved Mariano (vs Ruvan and Benji). Against Ruvan, Mariano comments that Ruvan's youth overcame the "wiley tricks of age".

Group Summary:

With bonus points in play, it was nip and tuck who would win group three. But in the end, one extra match played (and won) meant Sean was able to edge ahead of runner up Joanna while Steve, despite earning the bragging rights for having beaten our new champ in their head to head, has to settle with a very commendable third place. Now, had Steve also earned bonus points we would have another story to tell! However you look at it, an eventful round: Steve and Joanna's obviously extremely close 3-set, 2-day encounter "could have gone either way", while, Jim and Maria got to play their 3-set encounter a long way from Pavilion players' usual stomping ground (on holiday in Spain no less!).
