Player Comments:

  • "Good fun. Lovely weather for it. Lots of rallies full of slices and retrieving balls from out wide. Bill went 3-1 up in the first set before I managed to pull it back to take it 6-3. Second set was more even where Bill was 4-3 up before I took it 6-4."  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Toughest match I've had in a long while! Credit to Daniel it was an epic match! Set 1: I took a speedy 4-1 lead making most of my shots with good pace and depth. Daniel then started the comeback and turned on his relentless defensive skills, getting pretty much everything back. I managed to squeeze another game and held at 5-4 to eventually take the set! Set 2: Daniels non stop defense took its toll on me and he went up 3-1. After that it was a set of non stop breaks until we reached the inevitable 6-6 featuring some super long rallies and fist pumping. I managed to tighten things up in the tie break and close it out 7-1. A thoroughly enjoyable match. Good luck to Daniel for the rest of the matches"  -- Joe
Reveal CommentMartin Walker bt Daniel Sayers (Aug 1) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Damp conditions. Martin played a very solid game and made no errors. Some nice rallies but strong serving and winning shots from Martin made life difficult for Dan. All the best for your remaining matches"  -- Martin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentZach Shaikh bt AbdulAzeez Badmus (Jul 26) 6-1, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A long and hard fought match of tennis, that at times felt like a competition of who could get the most unforced errors. Hanley Park is certainly an entertaining place to play, however we persevered despite the endless distractions. Azeez broke me in the opening game but I quickly found my rhythm and was able to take the first set. The tide turned however, and Azeez grew in confidence to take the 2nd. A few early breaks and some important points falling my way, saw me take the 3rd. Azeez hit far more impressive winners and on a different day, the result could have fallen his way. Enjoyable match to play in and with some more time on court we’ll both eradicate those unforced errors from our game. Thanks Azeez, all the best. "  -- Zach
Reveal CommentDaniel Sayers bt Okechukwi Ahia (Jul 23) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great match in good spirits with both of us fighting hard for our first win in this round. The slices coming at me were sublime and stayed so low. I had to run and run and we both played some cracking shots. So many close games with one game going back to deuce around 15 times! Good luck with the rest!"  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentRobert Rhodes bt AbdulAzeez Badmus (Jul 23) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A strong first set by Rob with very few mistakes coupled with a nervy Abdul resulted in a 6-0 set, but there was signs the match wouldn't go this way in the final two games of the first set as both games went on for some time on deuce. Abdul certainly came out playing more confidently and picking off good winners in the second set and found himself 2-1 up early in the second. Rob pegged it back to and saw out the second set 6-4 but the rallies where longer and more distance covered by both players. Great to have some new players joining the league and without doubt Abdul has plenty more to offer in future matches, see you again Abdul :)"  -- Robert
Reveal CommentZach Shaikh bt Okechukwi Ahia (Jul 19) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another sweltering evening for some tennis. Okey and I played a competitive but very friendly match. Okey has some serious swagger with his game, and once he is able to find his rhythm again he will be a player to be scared of. A huge forehand and a monster serve are hiding beneath that lockdown rust. I was fortunate to run away with the first set but the second turned out to be far more competitive. I started off stronger but couldn’t finish the set off as Okey refused to give in. He was able to comeback from 5-1 down until I converted 1 of 3 match points to win the match. Good luck to Okey for his other matches and hopefully he can get a win on the board soon. "  -- Zach
Reveal CommentZach Shaikh bt Daniel Sayers (Jul 18) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was an absolute belter of an evening to play tennis. Arguably a little hot, however we persevered. Despite the score line this was a far more competitive match than our first meeting. Daniel found his touch early, with some lovely short returns and we broke each other in the opening games. Plenty of games went to deuce and the final score does not do Daniel any justice. He can be a tricky opponent who will frustrate you with his variety of shots. I was able to find some consistency with my serve and, despite the usual unforced errors, I found some big winners at important times. Thanks again Daniel and good luck with the rest of your matches."  -- Zach
Reveal CommentAbdulAzeez Badmus bt Daniel Sayers (Jul 17) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • " It was a warm Saturday morning, temp at 24°C which rose to 26° It's very competitive wt loads of deuces in both sets. Dan has good& consistent double-handed backhand& I noticed he favoured this. Dan initially raced through the 2nd set leading 3-0 b4 I managed to fight back. I thought I could muscle my way through with powerful serves &forehand shots but Dan was ready for me& he was consistent in returning the balls, I was also racking up lots of faults and unforced errors this way. My chances improved when I focused on simply returning the balls. It was a very close game and I was lucky to have won the 2nd set, I felt the sun&heat might've given me an edge as well. It was nice playing with U & I hope we can do this again soon. "  -- AbdulAzeez
Reveal CommentJoe Buckley bt Okechukwi Ahia (Jul 17) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I was feeling a little self conscious going into this match as I’d decided to go sleeveless to cope with the intense 30°C heat, which thankfully helped. Okey took a 2-0 lead, but once I’d settled in and got used to some tricky shots from Okey, managed to take the set 6-2. Similar way for the second set. All in all a fun match, look forward to playing Okey again. "  -- Joe
Reveal CommentRobert Rhodes bt Martin Walker (Jul 11) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A tight start led to 4 consecutive breaks of serve at 2-2 Rob held then broke again to take a 4-2 only for Martin to break back and get back on serve 3-4. After a few punishing points/rallies and games Martin had Rob on the Run but wasn't able to capitlise as Rob took the following games to see out the first set. Martin's game dropped off his usual response after going a set down and Rob held serve and saw out the 2nd set 6-0. Another good encounter but Martin wasnt at his usual game plan in the 2nd set. Stayed for a cheeky extra set after :)"  -- Robert

Reveal CommentJoe Buckley bt Martin Walker (Jul 8) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great evening for a match. Courts felt great, weather was perfect. I got off to a commanding start going up 5-0 before Martin held and then broke to go 5-2. Managed to calm my nerves snd serve it out at the second time of asking. Martin carried on his strong form and broke early going up 3-1 in the 2nd set playing some great tennis. I managed to wrestle it back to 4-3 with some close games and exceptional court craft from Martin. Throughly competitive match and a pleasure to meet Martin. All the best for the rest of the league "  -- Joe
Reveal CommentMartin Walker bt Bill Buckley (Jul 5) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great to see another new face in the league. Bill played some nice angled shots and will improve very quickly the more he plays. There were a few deuce games and bill did have several game points so was unlucky not to put a couple of games on the board. Good luck for the rest of the league. MW"  -- Martin
Reveal CommentRobert Rhodes bt Zach Shaikh (Jul 5) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Rob seemed to see the ball like a Beachball this evening, Zach caught me on a really good day where everything I seemed to play came off. Zach will improve for sure as the round progresses, some good first and seconds serves in the locker and any loose ball mid court he will eat up with his strong forehand topspins. Great to play against yet another new player in this group, which is what its all about. See you again Zach thanks :)"  -- Robert
Reveal CommentRobert Rhodes bt Okechukwi Ahia (Jul 4) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "fair play to us both raining when we arrived, Okechukwi came prepared with a brush, between us both we got the surface water off and got lucky with the weather for an hour, no more rain, courts drying out point by point and no slipping for either of us, was nice and warm tbh. Some fab rallies and winners played by both us both. All the best with remaining matches great to see some new players entering the league again :)"  -- Robert
Reveal CommentMartin Walker bt Okechukwi Ahia (Jul 2) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Nice evening for the match. Some really good shots from both players. Martin served well and played with consistency which helped him see this one out. Okechukwi played with an attacking style and hit some lovely winning shots. Enjoyable match, looking forward to our next encounter martin"  -- Martin
Reveal CommentMartin Walker bt Zach Shaikh (Jul 1) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match. Zach settled quickly and raced into a 3 1 lead with some powerful clean winners. Martin struggled to match the shots and quickly changed his style and relied on more percentage tennis. This swung the score around and Martin took the next 5 games and the set 6-3. Strong start to the 2nd saw Martin go 2 up. Credit to zach though he continued to produce excellent winners and started to dictate again and fought back to lead 4-3. He had game points for a 5 3 lead but Martin dug deep to recover and take the set 6-4 and the match. Great effort from zach with a very positive attacking display and if it wasn't for the higher percentage of unforced errors in his game than Martins it could have been a different outcome. "  -- Mar
  • "Martin was the deserving winner in this fast paced match. It was a lovely evening to play tennis and Martin can only be commended for adapting his game to end up winning this one. Disappointed to not get more out of the match but Martin was a great sport and I look forward to playing him again one day. All the best with the rest of your games" -- Zach

  • "Lovely morning which was warming nicely. Cracking match long time since we last played, Joe's serving has come on a lot good solid first and second serving from him in both sets today, Joe took shot of the day with a cross court lob (Murray esque/Davis Cup wining point) great match good luck with remaining matches Joe see you again soon."  -- Robert

  • "Haven't played in this league for a little while, but was shocked to see my Dad had joined at the same time! I simply had to get this match done first! We had some close games and some decent rallies, but the years of not letting me win as a child pushed me on to get my revenge! ;) Great to see you getting into tennis a bit more Dad! Good luck with the rest of the matches! "  -- Joe
