Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"An excellent introduction to the league. I have had a superb time playing competitive tennis for the first time in 30 odd years. Many thanks to everyone involved in organising the Reading league.  Here's looking forward to the next round!",

Jasbir Malhi

"Thanks for all you do to enable us to play against others in our locality - it's always been a pleasure to meet new people and have some great games, and the whole format works really well for people like me who want exactly the sort of flexibility you provide. Much appreciated," Alan Magness

"It was very good to play (and win!) this league. It helped in making the winter pass quicker. .. I feel now ready for playing in a higher group. Thanks for organising the league,"

Lorenzo Masoni

Collapse AllReading Singles - Round 38 | Thursday 11 April 2019 to Wednesday 5 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 8 May 2019)

Two thirds of matches were played in this lively spring-in-to-summer round of the Reading league. It was nice to see some returning faces and to welcome some new ones into what has grown to be one of the country's best leagues. Even the weather was fairly kind this time despite the odd hail storm. Looking forward to seeing you all again for the summer round. Now, where's the sun screen?

Group Summary:

With last round's Group One champ sidelined this time, all eyes were on the runner up. Francisco had lost out last time by a single point but this time victory was his, and by a rather more generous margin. Though runner-up Huib tested the champ in some twenty shot rallies, Francisco came through everything his opponents could throw at him and added bonus points just to make sure. As always, an excellent display of competitive tennis in Reading's top group and some lovely commentaries.

Final Rankings:

  1. Francisco Lorenzo 6.2 [W5] 12 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Huib Steenbergen [W3, L2] 10 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. James Ansell 6.2 [W3, L1] 6
  4. Dylan Polley 7.2 [W2, L2] 5

  6. Gerard Stewart [W1, L4] 3
  7. Andy Perry [L3, UF1] 1

By the second, Dylan had got to grips with the clay courts a little more and upped his game massively to take the second. The third was a real battle and could have gone either way, with both of us having periods of great play and big misses on key points. Felt lucky to take the win in the end, great game played in fine spirits! "  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "Tough match with Gerard where we had sun, rain, lots of wind and even some hail for good measure. All of that meant it was difficult for either of us to really get going, and we both had spells on top. In the second set particularly Gerard played some excellent points and probably deserved to take something from it. Hope for a rematch soon on a calmer morning!"  -- Andy
Reveal CommentJames Ansell bt Andy Nowlan (May 3) 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), [10-4]

Player Comments:

  • "First time playing Andy and knew I would be in for a tough match as I've already played doubles with him. Hugely consistent player that plays the ball deep and in play with every return. Both first sets were very tight with both of us having long rallies and dominant play. Andy has a great weapon is his backhand, and he whipped a few past me with that. By the 3rd set light was fading and we had to limit ourselves to a tiebreak - a shame to end this way, but I was glad to take the win, could have been anyone's today! Look forward to the next battle!"  -- James
Reveal CommentHuib Steenbergen bt Andy Perry (Apr 21) 6-0, 6-2

Reveal CommentJames Ansell bt Huib Steenbergen (Apr 21) 6-4, 1-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Interesting game with Huib - a hard battle for the first set, with us both having some epic rallies. The 2nd set Huib certainly upped his game and the slight cross wind was increasing the unforced error count meaning he took it in record time. In the 3rd I got my game back and was almost a direct reversal of the 2nd set to take the win!"  -- James
Reveal CommentFrancisco Lorenzo bt James Ansell (Apr 17) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Unfortunately this wasn't a battle as we would have expected. 1st time playing on clay since a while and we couldn't go for shots as we normally do, clay was difficult to play at, it was quite rusty and slippery. Literally tough to get a good grip on the surface. Looking forward our next one. "  -- Francisco

Group Summary:

Remaining competitive in as many matches as possible is often the recipe for success in the league and newcomer Joan provides a great example. Winning four matches outright is a great debut, but it was picking up points for sets won in matches lost that allowed him to claim top spot in Group Two. So well done Joan and commiserations to runner-up Jesus who nevertheless had a great round and the pleasure of knowing he defeated the champ in a tough three-setter. Edward takes third and a round of applause to Richard and Feras for picking up their bonus points.

Oli backs up his group win last round with another excellent run. Only Mike matched him for the number of matches played and no one came close to his tally of six wins and 14 points. League veteran Kevin, who beat Oli in their head to head, just nabs second place by virtue of conceding fewer sets on average than Ricardo and kudos to the no-fewer than seven players who proved their scheduling prowess and earned their bonus points.

Group Summary:

Reza stormed through his matches in his return to league action, not dropping a set in five of his six outings and nabbing bonus points to make the victory margin even more comfortable. Only runner-up Bernardo looked close to stopping Reza's winning run catching the champ off guard at the start of their match. Plenty of good matches in the group and even though Vasile didn't get going this time it was great that so many did get lots of tennis played and that so many earned their bonus points.

Group Summary:

Gerben made a tremendous debut to the league and won the group convincingly - in fact he ended up with more than twice the number of points as anyone else, was one of only two players to earn bonus points and did it all for the loss of just a handful of games. Promotion - quite probably by more than one group - awaits. Well done Gerben whose on court talent and generous match commentaries caught the spirit of the league. Three players battled it out for second place all ending up on six points so it is off to the rule book to separate them on head to heads and sets and games conceded - and Scott just edges it!

Group Summary:

Another very strong debut performance in this group - Andrew was not to be denied the full house of wins though Lyuba for one did his best, dramatically taking the first set in their match. Lyuba might have thought that sort of performance would be enough to earn her second place, but Jane was also having a fantastic round - though at one stage she feared all the matches were destined to go to three sets! Though tied on points her win over Lyuba, a three-setter of course, earns her the silver. A really strong group where every player can take away well-deserved positives.

Player Comments:

  • "Took me a while to get back into the swing of things after a long break from singles, which allowed Lyuba to walk away with the 1st set. The 2nd and 3rd sets were much tighter with one game in the 2nd going to about 15 deuces, It was only to be expected that the 3rd would go to a tiebreak - which could easily have gone the other way. Great match - thanks Lyuba"  -- Jane

Group Summary:

The battle for top spot was between Paul and Ben who both closed out with nine points, but it could have been a different story if Julian had managed to get a few more matches played! As it is, Julian undefeated after three matches and despite claiming the scalp of both Paul and Ben, has to settle with the bronze. In the end, Paul's win over Ben breaks the tie at the top and gives him the group. Great group with a lot of tennis played... just a few more matches would have made it even more interesting!

Player Comments:

  • "Solid match here - 2nd set actually felt closer than the first, with plenty of extended deuces, but I was a bit more consistent at a few key moments and got a good deal of assistance from the wind and the net tape to boot."  -- Ben

Reveal CommentBen Wōden bt Doug Forrest (Apr 21) 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Epic contest with Doug. First set was high-quality from both of us with one break apiece and a tight tiebreak (I may not have the TB score correct, sorry!) I think the first set took it out of us both mentally, as the second set was scrappier from both sides with more errors and breaks of serve, but I was able to be a bit more consistent at the end to close it out. Super-pumped for a rematch next round."  -- Ben

Group Summary:

Just as in the pro game, sometimes fitness and injury plays its part as Stephen and Konstantinos are discovering. This time it was Konstantinos who had to retire in their match, and that forced ending, together with Stephen's very consistent run of wins, meant he had to accept second place this time. Jamal just nudged third place but it's hats off to new champ Stephen in a nicely matched group. And well done Joanna - new to the league she played more matches than anyone else and was very unlucky not to come away with a win!

I hope to play Laura again next season."  -- Martin
