This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "Good playing Kris- a tactician extraordinaire. However I don’t think we had the chance to really play each other on this occasion, as the wind was definitely the third player on the court and dictated a lot of the points we played. Would love to play you in better conditions Kris, so let’s make it happen. All the best. "  -- Nuno
Reveal CommentMichael Archer bt Alejandro Puebla (Sep 22) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Not much to separate us both on a blustery evening at King George's. Close throughout, with multiple deuce games. Some exquisite volleying from Alejandro, giving me no chance to get close to them. Overall, both not at our best but I just managed to nick it in the end. Cheers for the game!"  -- Michael
Reveal CommentAlvaro Cordero bt Alexandru Tataru (Sep 17) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "As always, a very tough match with Alex. In the first set I was able to control the game with my slice, but Alex came back strong in the second set. We had long, tight points in the tie break and I managed to close it on my serve. "  -- Alvaro
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Alexandru Tataru (Sep 15) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very tough match against Alex The Wall as expected! First set started with 7 breaks in a row in disputed games using a lot of energy to stay close, managed to hold and went 5-3 up and served for the set. However Alex saved 3 set points and push the set to 4-5 and serving; he had 2 points for 5-5 however i've managed to convert the 6th set point after countless deuces. Second set managed to go up 2-0 benefiting from Alex's frustration with himself and had 2 points for 3-0 however once again Alex fought back smartly going up in the set 3-2 and 4-3. Difficult games with outstanding long exchanges, lots of angles and fantastic defensive skills on both sides. Luckily at 5-4 was my turn to serve and been able to hold strongly. Good luck Alex!"  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentNuno Ribeiro bt Michael Archer (Sep 13) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great to finally play Michael. Think we both have seen better days on the court though :) .... however some great angles from Michael making me run around the court, and close points specially in the second set. Best of luck with your next matches and let’s play again soon. "  -- Nuno
Reveal CommentKrzysztof Mikstacki bt Alexandru Tataru (Sep 11) 5-7, 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "What a rollercoaster ride Alex took me on in the first set! I almost got dizzy and lost my bearings!Lol! I experienced what Alex the wall stands for! He is an amazing retriever and his court coverage is outstanding. He makes you hesitant and overhitting your shots. I must have made about milion unforced errors because of Alexe's consistency. I had to seriously re-think my strategy and my game after the 1st set as I knew that I can't afford getting tangled in Alexe's type of game any longer. Luckily for me I managed to find a few cracks in the wall so I started exploring them in the next to sets. It's been really tough and full of tension match Alex. We need to do it again. Good luck for your remaining matches Alex!"  -- Krzysztof
Reveal CommentNuno Ribeiro bt Alejandro Puebla (Sep 10) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great day for tennis at high bouncing King George’s courts. Very good serving from Alejandro’ but unfortunately today the unforced errors complicated things for him. Let’s definitely play again Alejandro...thanks for the game. "  -- Nuno
Reveal CommentKrzysztof Mikstacki bt Michael Archer (Sep 8) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Mike today! The score doesn't tell the story. We played with quite light and slow balls so we had multiple, long and exhausting rallies, playing a full court game. It was very hard to hit through Mike as he is very quick around the court and gets lots of balls back. This match felt much longer and tougher than the scoreline shows. Mike has great and very consistent backhand. It's very hard to break it down. Great to meet another experienced and dedicated player who knows what he is doing on the court. All the best for the rest of the league Mike!"  -- Krzysztof
Reveal CommentAlexandru Tataru bt Christopher Belcourt (Sep 8) 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nice weather.... very nice match partner... first time I got a match out of Chris. Honestly it wasn't his day today. Unfortunately for Chris, his service wasn't as good as usual which helped me a lot. It was a nervy match for both of us trying to avoid the unforced errors, trying hard to keep the ball in play for just another shot.... and one more shot. Really apreciate Chris fighting spirit and resilience even when he was down ... he just wouldn't let go... A lot of games were played at deuce... and won by a very small margin... Thx again Chris"  -- Alexandru
Reveal CommentNuno Ribeiro bt Jean-Michel Jacob (Sep 8) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very good to meet you Jean-Michel. JM definitely has all the shots with moments of brilliance from both wings....unfortunately just a bad day. Thanks JM and keep hitting them. Best of luck going forward. "  -- Nuno
Reveal CommentNuno Ribeiro bt Alexandru Tataru (Sep 6) 6-4, 6-0

  • "First time playing Alex “The Wall” Tataru and must say this was a tough mountain to climb. Very tough competitor and good guy.....getting every ball back. All the best of luck for your next matches. "  -- Nuno
Reveal CommentKrzysztof Mikstacki bt Jean-Michel Jacob (Sep 6) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great meeting with Jean-Michel. He has a nice game with good technique and great hands but luckily for me Jean-Michel wasn't firing on all cylinders today. The longer the rallies went the more impatient Jean-Michel was getting. It's been great playing with you Jean-Michel and I wish you all the best for the rest of the league. Don't give up and try to finish all your matches as the only way to get back into the groove is to play long matches with all those great players."  -- Krzysztof
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Christopher Belcourt (Sep 6) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic 3h entertaining 3 sets match with Chris on a lovely perfect day for tennis! Match started with me going up 2-0 however Chris had a great comeback, settling in the match and we had a tough game at 3-3 which went my way and tipped the balance of the first set. 2nd set was a blockbuster with Chris playing very very well going up 3-0, 4-2 and stayed strong at 4-4 when he saved 3 breakpoints to hold for 5-4 and then pressured me constantly in the last game, saving 3 points of 5-5 and converting the 7th chance of closing 6-4 the set which he did and celebrated in style. 3rd set of more mental than phisical with both players opening the angles, serving well, running for each ball and executing great shots and pickups. Good luck Chiris"  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Michael Archer (Sep 5) 6-3, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great 3 sets battle once again against Michael. Lots of long rallies, amazing angles and pickups, using the full dimension of the court, testing our mental strength and feeling like in a never-ending chess game. All sets were extremely close and the only difference was that in the 3rd when our legs were gone got lucky with early breaks helped by the net who was on my side today (really sorry Michael)! Good luck in the next ones!"  -- Mihai

Reveal CommentKrzysztof Mikstacki bt Alejandro Puebla (Sep 4) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Alejandro is a tough Player with all the shots from the book and good looking technique. We played in slightly windy conditions but still managed to have a good match with lots of big serves on both sides. It was a matter of who is going to use the wind to his advantage more. Good to meet you Alejandro and I can't wait to face you again on clay in your club as I'd like to play you on your favourite surface."  -- Krzysztof
Reveal CommentNuno Ribeiro bt Christopher Belcourt (Sep 2) 6-3, 6-0

Reveal CommentKrzysztof Mikstacki bt Christopher Belcourt (Sep 1) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It's been a great match! Chris covers the court really well and with a lightening speed. Playing successfull drop-shot is almost impossible against Chris. He plays with total dedication and focus on each point. We had quite a few long rallies, pushing eachother hard. The first set was very close with many breaks of servers on both sides. I managed to hold my severe in the very last game of that set and that made the difference. I had to change my tactics and reorganize my shots in the second set otherwise I would in trouble again. Chris is a great player generating heavy top spin on both wings. You can't play short or easy ball against him as you will be punished almost each time. Great meeting you Chris! Hope to see you on the court soon"  -- Krzysztof
Reveal CommentKrzysztof Mikstacki bt Mihai Nagit (Aug 30) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The score doesn't reflect the level and intensity of the match. Mihai played very well and we had a quite close battle. Mihai has been pushing me hard with his intimidating forehand but at times I was able to withstand his barrage and that's what made the difference. There were a few very close games in each set but on a few occasions I was able to escape when Mihai had me on the ropes. Lots of brutal rallies and amazing pickups, using full dimension of the court. We both left it all on the court today. It's been great to meet you and cross swords with you Mihai. I hope we can repeat that soon! All the best for the rest of the league!"  -- Krzysztof
Reveal CommentNuno Ribeiro bt Alvaro Cordero (Aug 27) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great match and many hard fought points. Thanks for the game Alvaro and looking forward to playing again. "  -- Nuno
Reveal CommentChristopher Belcourt bt Alvaro Cordero (Aug 26) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Competitive match with varied tactical play from Alvaro. High loopy shots with some cat and mouse tempting each other into the net saw long rallies with winning vollies and passing shots; most notably a volley from Alvaro with the deftest touch in which he practically drew the ball in line with the net, for a short angle cross court winner. Only meeting with that shot would be about a week late....Amazing Alvaro!! It was perhaps the slow loopy nature of many of my shots and a sprinkling of aggression, that caused one or two errors more from the usual solid, automated smooth ground stroking ball machine that he is. Win or loose it is always a pleasure to play against Alvaro who is a true gentleman on court. We can all take lessons!!"  -- Christopher

Reveal CommentAlvaro Cordero bt Alejandro Puebla (Aug 21) 6-3, 2-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A very tough match in very difficult situations. The gusty wind and hard court affected Alejandro in the first set. He struggled to find his rhythm and I was able to close it on my serve. Alejandro started the second set serving and got his rhythm back. He steamrolled over me winning the second set and going up 4-1 in the third set. I had to change my strategy and dig really deep to make it back to 5-5 with Alejandro Serving. The 11th game was a real battle which I managed to win and close the set on my serve. Alejandro is a warrior with an excellent all court game. "  -- Alvaro
Reveal CommentAlvaro Cordero bt Jean-Michel Jacob (Aug 18) 6-2, 6-4

After another match point at 5:3 Rob managed to equalise to 5:5. Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match played indoors at the AELTC grounds. James & I played what could well be around our 40th match against each other. It was pretty close, just a the odd break of serve was enough to steal the lead in each set. James played some of the shots of the match with some fantastic slapping cross court forehand winners and some devious back hand slices. Just nice to to play a fun match in lovely facilities. Cheers James. Until the next time :) "  -- Anthony

Player Comments:

  • "Nothing about this match was fair... Manoj got stuck in awful traffic, there were gale-force winds, the net-gods were very one-sided (thankfully - they were on mine), we had to move courts at a crucial point in the match... stray balls crossed our court in the middle of the biggest rallies - but despite all this... It was great fun. A constant yo-yo.. Just when I had momentum, Manoj would claw his way back in - he almost wore me down with some incredible winners to finish rallies I was sure I'd won. Looking forward to playing again when the elements behave themselves! Good luck with the rest of it Manoj! "  -- James

There were some wonderful points and rallies played but I would say difference was the serving and backhand on my side were stronger on the day, meaning I could take the extra control needed for the win. Thanks for the game mate & good luck for the rest of your matches :)"  -- Anthony

Player Comments:

  • "Q: How many match points does it take to beat Anthony Dodge? It isn't 1 or 2 or 3. The correct answer, ladies and gents, is more than one. He keeps the pressure on the gas until the match is done and dusted. This was the last match we played in the local league since this is my last round at LTL so we wanted to give it all this time. And boy did we give it all! There was plenty of good serving, good hitting, some banter, some swearing, a lot of fire, a few angry moments, a disagreement or two, and a few silly misses. Oh and a few cheeky underarm serves too. The match had it all! Good luck for the rest of your matches, mate! It was awesome knowing and playing you over the past year. Best wishes!"  -- Bibhavasu
Reveal CommentAnthony Dodge bt Tim Rosser (Sep 6) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet & play against Tim who hit well and got a lot more back than I was expecting. I think I made the fatal error of underestimating Tim and that’s why I gave away more games than I would’ve liked. Tim has a weaker game but his tenacity & consistency surprised me. I was able to do enough to win, but it’s fair to say Tim played the best three shots of the match. One was a stunning down the line winner, then later a great lob and finally an acute angle slice backhand cross court. Beautiful shots. We also had a fan in the form or a gorgeously collie sheep dog that was drooling at the side of our court enjoying our play :) well played Tim & good luck with your tennis. I’m Sure we’ll bump into each other soon. Cheers, Ant "  -- Anthony

Player Comments:

  • "I was lucky to win the first set. And there endeth the comfortable life. James broke me twice at the beginning of the second set and raced to a 3-0 lead. I am not sure how I managed to get to 4-4 in the second set, as it went by in a blur while I was trying to find my footing. At 5-4 James held his serve, at 5-5 I lost my serve and was beginning to dread getting pushed into a 3rd set. James missed a few shots to have us enter tiebreak territory. Even then, he raced to a 3-0 lead. If you've figured by now that the second set was a bit of a yo-yo, congratulations! James had a couple of set points, and I match points. I had no right to win that set, but for a missed forehand from James. It was great playing you, James. Best wishes!"  -- Bibhavasu

Great to meet you Cameron, glad we could have a laugh in-between points and enjoy the match, great fun and great tennis. Keep developing your game and I'm sure you'll be even more of a force to reckon with in the near future. Cheers. "  -- Anthony

Today's match was less about Tennis and more about Wind Management. I was lucky to win the first set; Tim came back strong at the beginning of the second set. At 0-40 down in the 8th game, I was lucky to win a couple of points and take it to deuce. After about four deuces I finally managed to close the game, set and match. "  -- Bibhavasu
