Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Group Summary:

Not the biggest-ever group one, but what a set of matches. Every single fixture was completed and Mihai celebrated his fifth group one win in a row! Everyone got their bonus points and no one gave Mihai an easy ride, but no doubt who is the reigning champ! As for second place, there was not a whisker between Alexandru, Pawel or Toby, but for the record, the rule-book algorithm gives it to Alexandru!

Final Rankings:

  1. Mihai Nagit 7.1 [W5] 12 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Alexandru Tataru 8.2 [W3, L1, UF1] 9 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. Pawel Lipka [W3, L2] 9 includes 2 bonus points
  4. Toby Barton [W2, L3] 9 includes 2 bonus points
  5. Gareth Richman [W1, L4] 7 includes 2 bonus points
  6. Rags Martel [L4, UF1] 4 includes 2 bonus points

Match Results:

Reveal CommentPawel Lipka bt Rags Martel (Mar 10) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "We played 9am on clay in Pensford tennis club. Rags start strong 2:0 then to lead 3:1 later I started playing more efficiently ending the first set 6:3 Second set started similar from 3:1 for Rags and next I started play better and leading 5:4 serving for match with longest gem today with few deuces finally to win. Thank you and all the best "  -- Pawel
Alexandru Tataru v Rags Martel (Mar 8) 3-6, 6-4 TBC
Reveal CommentToby Barton bt Gareth Richman (Mar 7) 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (9-7)

Player Comments:

  • "Not much for the highlight reel other than some fine ace serves from Gareth. It was more of a marathon slog on our beloved Pensford clay courts. Most of the rallies were composed of my x-court sliced backhand defending against Gareth's inside out forehands with errors deciding points more than winners. Gareth has to learn to see out matches as once again he had match points, three in the last set but couldn't find the winning shot. I took a 4-1 lead in the deciding TB and despite Gareth hauling me back to 7-7 I eventually won with my own third MP."  -- Toby
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Pawel Lipka (Mar 3) 5-7, 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very disputed match with a lots of long games and intense moments. First set started with me leading 2-0, 4-1 and serving for 5-1 however Pawel like a Chinese drop came back to 5-5 chipping many vital points and stayed strong to close it 7-5. Second set had a similar unfolding, again me going up 4-1, 5-2 and serving for the much needed point for the championship. Again stubbornly Pawel recovered to 5-5 after in the 10th game saving 5 set points in a tough 10 deuces game. Fortunately managed to break his serve next and closed 7-5 to level the match. Third set was extremely disputed despite the score line and the only difference was that I've served better at 4-1 to edge closer to the victory. "  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentAlexandru Tataru bt Gareth Richman (Mar 1) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely to play Gareth again after a while. The match had everything... a lot of tension from both of us, lovely shots and frustrating easy errors from both ends. The fortune smiled to me more times today than to Gareth. It was a very disputed match that could have gone either way. "  -- Alexandru

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Toby Barton (Mar 1) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "An outstanding battle with Toby, playing him for the first time and learned a lot from this match. Toby is an exceptional player and his game plan really worked making me run and stay in defence most part of the match. I've started well leading 2-0 and Toby played amazingly recovering, leading 5-3 and closing strongly 6-4 the first set. Second set was as well a fight however managed to cut the unforced errors and play more winners and adjudecated it 6-2. Third set was a thriller with Toby playing very smartly and going up 3-1 and serving. Managed to survive long games with several deuces each and recover to 5-4 and closed the match 6-4. Very challanging complete player Mr. Barton I must say and looking forward playing you again!!!"  -- Mihai
Pawel Lipka bt Gareth Richman (Feb 12) 6-3, 7-5
Alexandru Tataru bt Toby Barton (Feb 8) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2
Reveal CommentGareth Richman bt Rags Martel (Feb 8) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A nervy and edgy first set ... which went my way. Second set was a battle. Rags fighting back from 2-5 down playing great shots and outfoxing me with some clever point plays. It went down to the wire at the business end and I managed to clip it. Always a pleasure to play Rags and look forward to hitting soon! Best, G "  -- Gareth
Alexandru Tataru bt Pawel Lipka (Feb 7) 6-2, 6-2
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Rags Martel (Feb 7) 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great 2.5h match on a windy Saturday morning! On the second point played in the match my strings snapped and had to play with an old and different racket. Nevertheless Rags played extremely well going up 4-1 in the first set and stayed strong after my comeback at 5-5 closing the set after 80 minutes at first chance he had on my serve. Second set continued with an inspired Rags serving very well and closing bravely at the net and going up 3-0. After long intense games we had to stop at 6-5 for Rags and hopefully we will close the match by midpoint."  -- Mihai
  • "We have resumed out match after several days and I served to stay in the match. Rags started well having 0-30 and 15-40 and had to battle hard to save 2 match points and push the match into a tie break. After winning the tiebreak, Rags started to force his serve and while he managed several aces he did as well couple of double faults. Great match and good luck with the next ones!" -- Mihai
Toby Barton bt Rags Martel (Feb 7) 6-3, 6-0
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Gareth Richman (Feb 2) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "What an outstanding battle with Gareth who is back competing, bringing his talent and resilience to group 1. We played a very long 3h match in good conditions on a Sunday afternoon and will need days to recover after the long grilling exchanges. First set started well for me going up 2-0, happily reunited with my newly stringed raquet and content the way I was serving. However Gareth after adjusting his game pushed me in every point, won 4 games in a row in very long rallies and stayed mentally strong at 4-4 closing the set 6-4. 2nd set was also battle with long disputed games however luckily the key points went my way. 3rd set was an epic drama with a lot of breaks on each other serves and fantastic exchanges. Great to have you back G!"  -- Mihai
Pawel Lipka bt Toby Barton (Jan 30) 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-4
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Alexandru Tataru (Jan 17) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What a fantastic match, Alex is back in group 1 where he belongs!!! After a slow start Alex decided to turn the tables and came back from 0-4 to 4-4, 5-5 and only a break in a long fought 11th game decided the winner of the first set. Second set was very similar, managed to play carefully, winning first 3 games when Alex played some brilliant tennis to make it 3-3. The 7th game was a blockbuster with 7 deuces and both players giving it all. In the end that was the game that decided the second set and probably the match. Great playing you Alex and good luck in your next matches!"  -- Mihai

Group Summary:

Only three matches not played in this busy group and was Max who dug deep to get the wins. His greatest challenge on court came from Rob, but Rob could not quite capitalise on his fine form to win enough matches to to gain a podium finish this time. Instead it was Martin who ran Max closest in the points tally grabbing a commendable silver! Well done Max our champ this time.

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMaximilian Rudolf bt Rob Hollinshead (Mar 7) 7-6 (7-4), 2-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Not the most beautiful match. Rob stormed away in 1st set going quickly 2:4 ahead with strong serving and several asses. Somehow I managed to come back and push Rob to the tiebreak which I won. But could have gone either way with lot of unforced errors on both sides. Second set again Rob quickly up 0:3. At 2:3 we had to leave the court. To be continued... Bibhavasu weathered the literal and tennis storms of the round just a little better than the others in this fantastic set or matches. Player Comments:

  • "If scores could describe how a match actually went, there would be no need for commentary or commentators. This was not an easy match at all! The pendulum kept randomly swinging from one side to another. In the first set I lost my serve twice and, lucky for me, managed to break Aman thrice. In the second set I could not find my rhythm at all and lost to love. Let's not talk about that, shall we? When the third, and final, set started Aman raced to a 3 - 0 lead within minutes. While panic was setting in, I managed to win a game (after 9 games) and felt like Radu Albot when he played RF at Basel in 2019. The boost in confidence from that one game helped me take the set to a tiebreak and, eventually, win. Looking forward to playing again."  -- Bibhavasu

The windy conditions were not fun to play in but after losing two weekends to storms this was perhaps the best we could've got. Thanks to Nicolo for a good match. It was quickly clear that Nicola wasn't going to let me play my normal game and I had to dig very deep to find a plan B, then a plan C! Player Comments:

  • "Paul & I played in some very challenging conditions in gusty winds at Old Dear Park making for some crazy points with the wind moving the ball all over the place. Despite the conditions we had some good rallies and had to laugh about the ridiculous nature of playing a match in winds of 15-20mph wind.... Thanks for the match paul and good luck with the rest of your matches."  -- Anthony

She had me on the ropes during the first set, breaking my serve immediately as well as returning my serve well including some return winners. Really enjoyable and challenging match. Looking forward to the next one."  -- Anthony

Reveal CommentAmanda Lathia bt Gabor Vegvari (Mar 8) 3-6, 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Gabor. Again, another close one. Could have gone either way. Gabor was hitting close to the lines and made a great come back from 1-4 down in the third set. We were both frustrated by the wind but at other times it helped on a few shots!"  -- Amanda
Reveal CommentAmanda Lathia bt Ian Simpson (Mar 1) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "We both grappled with the windy conditions (which is an understatement) unable to hold serve for most of the first set except the penultimate game. Ian took the lead in the second set but the conditions became unpredictable with the wind dying down and picking up at inopportune moments! Neither of us played our best, most games going to deuce and I just managed to edge out the rather topsy-turvy match. "  -- Amanda
Ian Simpson bt Mitsie Butler (Feb 23) Walkover
Ian Simpson bt Gabor Vegvari (Feb 22) 6-3, 6-4
Hashem Mirzadeh bt Mitsie Butler (Feb 8) 6-3, 6-4
Reveal CommentAmanda Lathia bt Mitsie Butler (Feb 8) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Pleased to have played tennis on a lovely, sunny day. (Won’t be the case tomorrow - heavy winds will make it impossible). We had some lively, long rallies, including two great lobs from Mitsie. We exchanged mostly shots from the baseline and had to contend with serving into the sun! A fun and varied match overall."  -- Amanda
Ian Simpson bt Lisa Comber (Feb 8) 6-0, 6-0
Reveal CommentAmanda Lathia bt Hashem Mirzadeh (Feb 1) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The match started dissatisfactorily due to the condition of the court-equally slippery and sticky with bird muck! I would avoid court 3 at York Gardens. Luckily we were able to switch to court 4 for our second set and began playing properly; Hashem broke my serve (to love) in the second game. We exchanged longer rallies and I had to stay focussed after dropping another game at 4-2. At 4-3, I just about held serve after a couple of deuces while Hashem was finding his rhythm and the middle of the racket! So a fun match in the end!"  -- Amanda
Reveal CommentAmanda Lathia bt Lisa Comber (Jan 25) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another competitive match with Lisa, trading long rallies going to deuce several times in the first set, which the scoreline doesn’t reflect. The second set involved long rallies again with more points going Lisa’s way, particularly at the beginning of the set. Really enjoyed the long rallies! Great start to the round."  -- Amanda
Ian Simpson bt Hashem Mirzadeh (Jan 25) 6-0, 6-1
