Player Comments:

  • "A very entertaining battle with Alvaro! We've started with 4 games that felt like a set with many deuces that all ended in my side. From 0-4 Alvaro changed the strategy, came back to 5-5, then pushed the set into a tie break that finished 7-5. 2nd set started with Alvaro very motivated to come back leading 2-0, 3-1 and keeping his nerve at 3-3 to go up 4-3 and closed it with 6-4. 3rd set was a thriller with Alvaro breaking in the first game and going up for the first time in the match, followed by me winning 5 games in a row and serving for the championship at 5-1. It was not to be! Long 4 games with outstanding rallies, beautiful winners and silly unforced errors pushed us at 5-5. After 3.15h we've got kicked out of court! TBC probably

First set we went head to head to 4-4 both holding serves then the 9th game was the decider with some mistakes from Pawel giving the first break and the set. The second set was a strong come back from Pawel leading with 3-0 and holding his nerve at 3-2 in a thriller 8 deuces game which decided the second set. 3rd set was very entertaining with Pawel this time playing catch up at 0-2, 1-4, 3-5 however loosing in the last game after 6 deuces and saving 6 match points. • "What a great match on a frosty sunny day! After defrosting the court for 1h, the battle begun with Max playing very well going up 3-1 and 5-3 and closing 6-4 the first set at the second chance on my service. 2nd set was a battle the first 4 games with long 6/7 deuces that went my way and put off Max for 20 min however mentally preparing for the 3rd set. The decider was an epic battle in the first 7 games with Max giving it all, diving at least 10 times, once twice in a point at a drop shot followed by a lob. His compatriot Boris Becker invented this on Wimbledon grass and Max took it further on hard courts. After 9 deuces and breaking for 4-3 lead the match went my way with relatively quick 2 games. Great match once again Gladiator Max!"  -- Mihai

Could easily have gone either way, at 0-2 in first set I thought I might be on to a 0-6, but won 6-3, and second set I was feeling good and found myself 5-1 down. We had to finish at 5-4 which was cruel, so there was a lot of pressure starting at that point in the match! • "Terry has a devilishly wicked game, which perfectly matches his humour. The game didn't start well. Terry pointed out that according to the rules it was my responsibility to bring ball-boys/girls. I explained that I'd only scanned the rules - and apologised - but he was quite rightly furious. I'm afraid it cost him the first set, as he angrily fired balls left, right - but rarely centre. Again I'd had the unwitting effrontery to break the only-one-drop-shot-per-set rule but this time, Terry managed to focus his rage and very nearly took me out with one of his laser-sharp passing shots. Had it not been for the sun in his eyes I'm not sure I'd be here to write this. I'll be banned, for sure, but it was worth it. I have no remorse. "  -- James

Group Summary:

Paul played more matches than anyone else and scored bonus points, and this proved to be a winning formula as he picked up four impressive victories, despite the "windy conditions", to boost his total and climb into first place. Now runner up Mario defeated Paul in a "very competitive match" and finished unbeaten from his three matches, so could he have gone one better if he had played a couple more?
