Collapse AllRichmond Parks Singles - Round 28 | Thursday 4 June 2020 to Wednesday 29 July 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 1 July 2020)

Around two thirds of all possible matches were played this round which is a great effort for the first round back post-lockdown. We welcomed no fewer than 19 new players to the league alongside our regulars and returners, so it was great to see so many of you hitting the courts in Richmond Parks for friendly, competitive tennis again! Well played everyone and here's to the next round!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Mihai for retaining his Group 1 crown in convincing style, winning all 7 matches to finish 3 points clear of runner up Alvaro. It was far from straightforward in their head to head though with Mihai breaking a string in the third game and the result going to the wire before Mihai edged it [8-6] in the third set tiebreak. Alvaro had an impressive 3 set win of his own against Toby in a "long hot match" on clay while the closest match of all was between Alexandru and Michael with 3 tiebreaks... what an exciting group!

Player Comments:

  • "Another competitive match in this round of games. Bilal, took an early 2-0 lead in the first set before we both lost our serves a few times before a close finish to the set, with me just edging it. Again in the second set, Bilal took a 3-0 lead before I mounted a comeback with a run of games that saw me take the match. Look forward to a return match in the next round!"  -- Michael

  • "The wind made playing very difficult. Chris played very well, especially the first set. In the second set we even up to 2-2 where Chris double faulted twice and I was able to get the break."  -- Alvaro
Reveal CommentChristopher Belcourt bt Alexandru Tataru (Jul 15) 4-6, 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Spartan!! Absolutely ridiculous the fitness and will with which Alex now plays tennis. From the very start he showed resilience, holding break points with consistent shots and running down balls like a Russel terrier. We exchanged extremely long rallies towards the end of the first set with a 20 + full of tentative smashes from me, ending up in this metronome's favour. I was broken and dead. Alex looked fresh as a daisy! He served out the first set with ease. Serving at the start of the second a Buffalo took residence upon my chest as I found myself at 0-40. A few erroneous errors from Alex saw me somehow hold and perhaps change the flow of the remaining match. A much closer 2 final sets than the scoreline depicts. Well played Alex!! "  -- Christopher

Player Comments:

  • "This was a battle that stretched for two days. First session extended for 2.5hrs where we played 25 games. In the first set, Bilal came back from a 5-3 to win the set 7-5. In the second I have to fight a 0-3 disadvantage and finally manage to take the set in tie break. Second session was a very entretaining set with long rallies. I managed to win some key points that made al the difference. "  -- Alvaro

Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Alvaro Cordero (Jun 30) 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Tough match as expected against Alvaro who is an outstanding player that I enjoy playing often with, he leads overall H2H. The match started with 5 breaks in a row and breaking my strings in the 3rd game. Alv kindly helped me to recondition an older racquet and allowed me to hit several balls before resuming, super fair play. Managed to hold twice and closed the first set. 2nd set was a one way street with Alvaro making no errors, playing very determined and winning no matter what I tried with a clear 6-0. 3rd set was a long battle in which I trailed behind one game the entire set and survived to play a tiebreak. Went up 4-1, however Alvaro came back, lead 5-4, 6-5 and forced me to save a match point before closing it 8-6. Good luck!!!"  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentMichael Archer bt Maximilian Rudolf (Jun 27) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I played a solid match in this one, luckily for me, Max's forehand wasnt firing as he would probably expect, I saw glimpses of the power he can generate on his forehand and was pleased I caught him on an off day! Good luck with your remaining matches."  -- Michael
Reveal CommentAlvaro Cordero bt Toby Barton (Jun 26) 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Well done Alvaro managing to keep his focus in a long hot match on my home clay courts at Pensford. I lost 6lbs weight and a guy on the adjacent court fainted. Need to work on my volleys, dumped too many in the net. Alvaro has a good tennis brain and his game is well suited to clay."  -- Toby
Reveal CommentMichael Archer bt Alvaro Cordero (Jun 23) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A closely fought contest with Alvaro at the very high bouncing courts of King George's field. A fierce competitor who you know fights for every point and adapts his game to the ebbs and flows of a match. It could quite easily have gone to a third set, Alvaro saving about 5 match points and having chances to take it to a tie break, however I somehow fell over the line. Good luck with your other matches."  -- Michael
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Alexandru Tataru (Jun 21) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • What a memorable match!!! 1st set started with a very motivated Alex who played extremely smart going up 2-0, 5-1 and had a set point at 5-3 despite all my efforts. Managed to survive the set point, broke back and in the following game after several deuces made it finally to 5-5 and started to feel more confident that I can turn the set around. In spite of losing the first set Alex regrouped and started again very focused going up 3-1 in the 2nd set really putting pressure on my game. Slowly recovered and made it to 4-3 when Alex broke my serve and went up to 5-4 threatening the outcome of the set moving incredibly well after more than 2h in the heat. You fought like a lion today Alex and good luck with your next league matches!! -- Mihai
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Michael Archer (Jun 21) 6-1, 3-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Outstanding 2.5h match on Sunday against the great defender and consistent metronome Michael!!! First set was very disputed despite the score line, however Michael played to my strengths and was a bit unlucky in the key points of several games. Second set Michael managed to reset, focused on his strengths and played consistently and patiently point after point winning clearly the set and levelling the match. Third set was a battle head to head until 4-3 when luckaly a break came my way in a long disputed game and despite Michael not giving up managed to close the match. Well played Michael, good luck with the next matches and see you around! "  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Toby Barton (Jun 20) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game and well earned win for Mihai. I’m slowly finding form after lockdown and got off to a good start 4-1 but you always know Mihai will fight back and I had to fight to seal the first set 6-4. He continued his comeback and stormed to a 5-0 lead second set although I did haul him back to 5-4. Third set I lost a bit of form as the old legs tired and his forehand went up a notch to leave me scrambling for a lot of balls."  -- Toby
  • "1st set started with Toby going up confidently to 4-1 and had a 5-1 point when settled in and came back to 4-4 and 15-40 on his serve, however Toby strongly held and close the set with break on my serve after 1h. 2nd set was very interesting, reducing my unforced errors and playing more boldly managed to go up 5-0 and had a chance to close the set however Toby managed to break and started a 4 games streak come back pushing the set to the deciding game at 5-4. 3rd set was very disputed especially at 2-1 when after a long game managed the first break and after that Toby got a bit more tired than me I suppose. Anyway after 2.5h, 2100 calories, 30 min recovery on a park bench made it home barely walking and had a cold beer." -- Mihai
Reveal CommentAlvaro Cordero bt Alexandru Tataru (Jun 19) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Playing Alex is always fun and challenging. He is quick on his feet, and with his great reach and heart of a bear get's everything back, forcing you to hit winning shots two or three time to win the point. Every game is a battle !!! "  -- Alvaro
Reveal CommentBilal Basir bt Maximilian Rudolf (Jun 19) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Well fought match played over 3 sets. Max dominated the 1st set with plenty of forehand winners. Even though I got the initial break he managed to come from behind. Second set perhaps I managed to clean up the errors from my game which resulted in long rallies on the stretch. Some lovely down the line on-the-run forehand winners from Max (reminded of Pete Sampras) at his best. 3rd set I managed to get an early break and after few exhausting long games managed to perhaps make less errors at key stages of the match. Max got an amazing forehand and I wish him all the best for his rest matches."  -- Bilal
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Christopher Belcourt (Jun 19) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great playing Christopher again, beautiful strokes and interesting angles. However today couple of unforced errors in the key points gave me an undersved lead in the first set. Second set was extremely disputed with Chris breaking my service twice and coming back several times from 0-40 to hold on his serve. At 4-3 a very long game with several deuces went my way and manage to serve the match out. Good seeing you again and good luck with the next ones!!"  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentChristopher Belcourt bt Maximilian Rudolf (Jun 16) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Max has brilliant ground strokes off both wings, with some vapourizing forehands. I saw balls fly past me both while at the net and in the baseline. After an early couple of brakes, during a game which saw max racing from the back of the court, some damage was clearly sustained. Having been very tight up until that point things soon started to change. In immense pain Max began to hit big on most points. With just a slightly higher percentage made he could have applied some pressure & forced errors from myself, however at that point it was clear all one needed to do was play safe. It is testament to his fighting spirit & desire to maintain a high league satisfaction among the group that he fought until the end. As the French say Chapeau"  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Bilal Basir (Jun 15) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A 3h battle with long rallies, outstanding serves from Bilal (at least 7 aces) and both players giving it all despite the warm day. 1st set was very disputed going head to head until 4-5 when Bilal's aggressive forehands managed to break my service game and bag the first set. 2nd set was quite long and tough despite the score line. The 3rd one was very similar to the first one with first 5 games breaking each others serves and at 3-2 for me and 0-40 while serving I've managed to survive pushing the game to deuce and after probably 20 min, 8 deuces with chances on both sides managed to hold. I think this was the key moment of the match when this set could have gone either way. Great fighting spirit Bilal, good luck with the next ones!!!"  -- Mihai
Reveal CommentMichael Archer bt Toby Barton (Jun 13) 6-2, 6-4

  • "Enjoyable game against Michael who had too solid a game for me with some amazing angles to keep me stretched. Another loss on my home clay courts but I'll take them over tarmac any day, much kinder on the old knees."  -- Toby
Reveal CommentMaximilian Rudolf bt Alexandru Tataru (Jun 13) 7-6 (7-5), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very intense 2hr 15min battle. Went up in the first set 4:2 to see myself 40 mins later 5:6 down. Managed to get the tie break where i was down 2:4 but somehow managed to bring the set over the line. Lot of extreamly long rallies and very challanging to stay focused within these - physically and mentally. Second set start with Alex beeing quickly up 2:4 but again lot of long rallies and my serve helped me to get back to 4:4 after breaking Alex after 8! dueces my serve didnt let me down and i could finish the battle. Thank you very much Alex. Always a pleasure playing against you although not sure if my mind and body agrees..."  -- Maximilian
Reveal CommentChristopher Belcourt bt Bilal Basir (Jun 11) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Started out as a very tense match, with bilal serving well and striking nice forehands. At two all it felt like it could have gone either way, but after a long battle I managed to take the game and Bilal's presence started to dwindle. Unfortunately it turned out to be an injured back which forced an all or nothing approach. Although there were many tight games from this point the lack of movement and ability to strike the ball in his usual manner saw him loose the crucial points. Clearly very frustrating. My wishes for a speedy recovery and an enjoyable remainder to the season. I feel you'll get me next time Bilal. Look forward to hitting again soon."  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentMaximilian Rudolf bt Toby Barton (Jun 11) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Played on my home clay but didn't save me from Max's huge forehand. Stayed with him score wise but always felt he had the edge and final score slightly flattered me."  -- Toby
Alexandru Tataru bt Bilal Basir (Jun 9) 6-4, 7-5
Reveal CommentBilal Basir bt Toby Barton (Jun 8) 3-6, 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • “Toby took me by surprise with his moonballing skills and slices. He would hit the ball high up in outer space just to land close on the baseline. After adjusting to the initial shock had to step in closer inside the baseline to get the job done. Managed to break his serve twice each in 2nd and 3rd set to get the job done. Not the prettiest of tennis but managed to burn 2483 calories as per iwatch :)'' - Bilal
  • ''I never found my timing on the slow unpainted tarmac but Bilal made too many errors first set. Second set he was much steadier only going for occasional crunching forehands and my game was exposed. Final set I responded with plan B, moonballing and this led to long tedious rallies but Bilal remained a bit more aggressive and served well from 4-5 30-30 and then saw out the match quite comfortably.'' - Toby
Reveal CommentMihai Nagit bt Maximilian Rudolf (Jun 5) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great match once again against Max even bit rusty both after the lockdown. Both sets were quite similar with tight long games head to head until 4-3 followed by a break on Max serve and closing 6-3. I think we were quite tentative sometimes, playing safe and waiting for the opponent mistake. On top of that Max broke his strings at 2-2 in second set and I could see his frustration on a different stringed racquet however fair-play he continued the match and put up a good fight. Good luck with the next ones Max!!"  -- Mihai

Group Summary:

It was very tight at the top of Group 2 with returning player Alejandro and newcomer Lukasz both tied on 5 match wins and 12 points so it was settled by their head to head... which Alejandro won helped by some strong serves and a slower start from Lukasz. Lukasz was quick into his stride against Rags and Chris though taking the first set and going on to win, while Alejandro didn't drop a set in his whole campaign... well played!

Struggled to stay in the first set but was able to conclusively turn the tables in the second set. Resuming 2-3 in the decider I subsided pretty tamely, but take nothing away from Lukasz he was the better player and thoroughly deserved the win. A tough guy to beat!"  -- Chris

  • "James (my old nemesis) & I played at ODP in very blustery conditions. We have a long history of playing many matches together, many of which have been close with epic battles along the way. This match wasn't one of our better games, not helped by the wind, which maybe I handled better. I think it's fair to say James had an off day, especially in the first set, but it was much closer in the second set. I'm sure out next encounter will be more epic than this one. See you on court soon buddy :) "  -- Anthony

  • "Tough match against Anthony today. I'm sorry to say I felt completely dominated from the baseline but I managed to keep it together. During the first set I had a few set points at 5-3 then one at 6-5. So when I got another during the tie-break I thought, I'm really going to regret this if I lose the set!. Similar story during the second set, I was often a break up but no match points this time, not until 6-5 that is. I'm glad I hung in there because Anthony has a big, scary game. Very enjoyable match, thanks!"  -- Thomas

Player Comments:

  • "Had a blast playing at Barry's club in Osterley where we were able to play our match in non-rainy conditions. I had been warned that Barry would be a tough opponent and I can say that he certainly was. Barry is a deceptive player with a very good first serve, which would always go low and fast over the net, but it was his incredible determination and knack of getting everything back that became frustrating to play against. Barry really makes you work for every point. In the end I had to play smart and slow down my shots to pick my spots to keep enough control to break Barry down. A competitive match played in good spirits with a laugh along the, a thouorulghy enjoyable game. Thanks Barry and good luck in your remaining match. "  -- Anthony

  • "It was an absolute pleasure to meet & play against Cliff, a truly top guy . I don't think I've played against someone who was so evenly matched. It was one of the most enjoyable matches I've had, played in great spirits with the right amount of competitiveness and fun during the game. It was a rollercoaster, each set was filled with some solid base line rallies and good serving from both sides. Both of us had our moments of form with Cliff hitting some wonderful passing shots off his forehand side especially. The final set good have gone either way, cracking tennis all round ! Exactly what you'd want from a league match ! Looking forward to playing again in the future & good luck in the rest of your matches. "  -- Anthony

  • "Glorious day for tennis! Second attempt at the match after being postponed due to the almighty downpour a week ago. Mike took advantage of me having an off day in the first set.. And by the time I'd got back into the swing of it, Mike's shoulder was playing up, so the second set wasn't really a fair representation. Good fun.. Looking forward to the next one! "  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "A very friendly game with Michael played in good spirits on a slightly wet court at Moormead Rec. The dampness meant we didn't have many rallies but glad we got our match played. Michael proved an unpredictable opponent with some devilish fast serving but more impressive was his huge top spin forehand. Watch out for that ! I'd say Micheal played the best shots of the match with some fantastic forehand winners off my serve. Luckily my serve held for the most part and I played a solid game to stay in control. Thanks for game Michael & good luck with rest of your matches. Ant "  -- Anthony

Adam played well to get the better of Nicolo in 3 sets despite feeling he was "very lucky" to take the second set, but he couldn't quite repeat this against Graham when he lost after saving 6 match points... great effort!
