Finding Your Place in a New City

Andres Venafri

I’ve met wonderful people, made friends and have even been invited to play in a local friendly tournament. My girlfriend has also become enthusiastic about tennis and I am teaching her to play and she is loving it and is learning very fast!

I moved to London from Argentina last December, just when the lockdown started. I know, perfect timing!! I started playing tennis when I was 6 and it has since been an important part of my life. I’ve lived in different cities around Europe before and always tried to play some tennis, but it was often hard to find other people to play with and unfortunately there wasn’t anything similar to the Local Tennis Leagues in the cities I’ve lived in.

After four months of lockdown in London, I was really looking forward to playing, but as I didn’t know anyone in the city, I thought it would be difficult to find other players. After a quick internet search, the Local Tennis Leagues came up and I signed up immediately. I am currently enrolled at the West Ham League and have recently also played in the Lee Valley League.

The Leagues have been perfect for me; they are a brilliant way to play tennis every week. I’ve met wonderful people, made friends and have even been invited to play in a local friendly tournament. My girlfriend has also become enthusiastic about tennis and I am teaching her to play and she is loving it and is learning very fast!

One of the other great things about the Leagues is that it has allowed me to explore London, its different courts, neighbourhoods and locals. It really helps you feel more integrated into UK life. I have so many matches to play now that I have to find time to play everyone!

I’m really looking forward to signing up to other Leagues and continuing to meet more amazing people to share this wonderful sport with. A big thank you to the fantastic team organising the Leagues!
