Making New Friends & Exploring Your City

Adam Etinson

Local Tennis Leagues has been a great way for me to feel more integrated into UK life, which isn’t always easy for an outsider.

I moved to Edinburgh from Chicago in August of 2016, for work, and didn’t know a soul. In addition to making some friends, I was keen to figure out how to get some exercise, and play tennis. Luckily, LTL came up on a Google search. I immediately signed up (to multiple local leagues) and never looked back. Local Tennis Leagues have been my main way of playing matches, exercising, and meeting new players ever since. One of the best things about LTL is that it encourages you to explore your own city, its different courts, locals, and neighbourhoods. They’ve been a great way for me to feel more integrated into UK life, which isn’t always easy for an outsider (even for a member of the ‘Commonwealth' like me - I’m Canadian).

Tennis is an incredibly addictive sport; the more you play, the more you want to play. I’m always trying to get better, and improve aspects of my game, though I can’t say for sure that I’m succeeding at this. I start each round sure that I’ll perform better than the last one. But I can’t be alone in the experience of getting beaten, again and again, by the same players round after round. Oh well. Maybe we’re all improving at the same rate!
