The best is yet to come in the US Open and tonight’s semi final between Rafa Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro should be a classic. Do not miss!
If you have plans for tonight, cancel them. Order a take away. Turn off your phone. Sit down and enjoy what promises to be a sensational semi final between Rafa Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open from 9pm tonight. If it is anything like their Wimbledon quarter final encounter, which Rafa won 7-5, 6-7, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, it will be a classic.
The players’ route here is being closely scrutinised for clues to the outcome. In the brutal conditions of this year’s sweltering tournament, much comes down to endurance and recovery. By that measure, it is not looking good for the Spaniard. According to the Daily Telegraph so far Rafa has played for longer (953 minutes compared with Del Potro’s 735) and run further (44,809 feet compared with only 23,378 for Del Potro) and has dropped 4 sets to Delpo's one and after his 5 setter with Dominic Thiem on Wednesday, Rafa will not have got to bed much before 6am says Greg Rusedski:
“Not even Superman could physically return to full capacity after Rafa’s fortnight.”
Rusedski is picking del Potro for tonight; Boris Becker is picking Nadal to win the title. Who will win is anyone’s guess. But whatever you do, make sure you are watching.
And if you want a little flavour of Nadal’s magic, come to Mallorca!
The Rada Nadal Academy by Movistar is 5 minutes walk from Rafa’s home town of Manacor where he grew up playing for the unpretentious Manacor Tennis Club. Opened in 2016, the Academy offers state of the art facilities with clay and hard courts, and free use of its fantastic sauna, gym, indoor and outdoor pool, and every type of exercise class you could wish for. More than just a top sports Academy, it is the spiritual home for Rafa Nadal and his values (pictured above, Rafa Nadal at the annual Christmas programme.)
