Air your armpits, and play better

WEB WATCH

In a new occasional series, we highlight great tips from the web. First up: discover why the ATA drill, as the USTA call it, could transform your backhand

When you are in the heat of the moment in a match, there is not much time to think but if one of your shots is not working, you want a simple word or phrase to remind you want to do. For a two-handed backhand, the USTA recommend thinking Air The Armpits.

It might not be the prettiest phrase, but it is a great reminder of exactly what you need to do. You have to follow right through on your swing, finishing with both hands over your shoulder, elbows facing the net and armpits well aired. This will keep the ball out of the net and send it deep which is a great way to put pressure on your opponent. As tennis is a game where the forehand tends to dominate, having a powerful and consistent backhand is a huge plus.

And in this weather, airing your armpits will keep you cool.
