Reveal CommentJames Doak bt George Warburton (Sep 9) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great match played on the indoor courts at Graves Tennis Centre. At a set and 3-0 up I thought I was cruising to a comfortable win . However George started landing some of his big first serves and then capitalised on my double faults to battle back to go 4-3 up in the second set. I had to pull off several winners and an ace to finally close out very tough match. Good luck with the rest of the group George. "  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "Vish and I are no strangers and know each others Tennis game very well. A regular hitting partner who I have played more singles against than I can keep count. Up to date the head head is probably around 50/50, predictably the match was very Close. Vish was very good at the baseline today as is usually the case. Capable of hitting through the ball backhand and forhand, with pace and depth which puts you under pressure straight away. Very few loose balls and even fewer unforced errors. Capable of hitting winners from the baseline and putting away short balls in some situations but due to the pressure as the game progress it ended up being more of a baseline battle. Vish was just as worthy of the win and I look forward to our next match"  -- Joseph

Player Comments:

  • "An entertaining match played on damp courts at both Millhouses and Graves! A venue change was required due to puddles on the court for the second hour of the match! An entertaining, close first set saw set points squandered by both of us. Second set was equally close. Some good rallies and tennis played in the right way. Good luck with rest of your matches. "  -- Ian

Player Comments:

  • "The court was slightly wet at the start of match and a bit slippy but just about playable, so both me and Dan agreed to proceed. I won the first set as I was able to settle into the conditions quickly. The second set was a real battle with some good tennis from both players. This set could have gone either way at 7-5 and Daniel proved to me in the second set he is a decent intermediate player with a good range of rally shots and capable of putting away short balls in some situations. Very decent guy, good sportsmanship and a much enjoyed game."  -- Joseph

Player Comments:

  • "A biting easterly breeze swept off the yellowing slopes of the Pennines, the floodlights at Graves Park Health and Sports Centre clicked into action and Max and Alex zipped up some mid-range long-sleeved sports wear. Both competitors struggled with the cross breeze at times. Lobs were overpowered but also treacherous. It would have been far closer but for some ill-timed double faults and unforced errors from Max. As fair weather tennis players go to ground for the darker months, it warmed to cockles to see two spirited players defiantly yell ‘not today, winter!’, not with their mouths, but with their rackets. Today more than ever, in spite of Alex’s victory, tennis was the real winner. "  -- Alexander
Reveal CommentRichard Milne bt Luke Vatkovsky (Oct 3) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really good game with lots of cat and mouse rallies involving lots of back-spin drop shots. Luke struggled to find a consistent first serve, which I remember was a big weapon the last time we played. I'd had the luxury of having played quite a few games prior to this one and I felt comfortable with my forehand and surprisingly my backhand as well, which allowed me to keep the in the rallies. Towards the end Luke was playing some Murray-esque defensive shots and stretching for every ball and I had to fight for every point. All the best with you remaining matches and look forward to playing you again."  -- Richard
Reveal CommentThomas Hill bt Max Everett (Oct 2) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A game where neither of us really got into our stride in greasy conditions amongst the hustle and bustle of Hillsborough Park. Ultimately, Max's misfiring serve gave me too many free points in what otherwise would have been a close game. "  -- Thomas
Reveal CommentRichard Milne bt Thomas Hill (Sep 27) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A game of two contrasting styles, Thomas likes to come to the net and volley whereas I prefer to stay on the baseline and keep my opponent deep. The first set was very close with most games going to deuce, however the wind was a real factor to contend with at the end of the first set and the second set, which probably suited my game more as I had more time to judge the flight of the ball whereas Thomas struggled with some difficult balls at the net that would change direction all of a sudden. I think Thomas had to adapt his game more to suit the conditions and he could not consistently get the right length and power with his forehand. A great game, all the best with your remaining matches and look forward to playing you again. "  -- Richard
Reveal CommentRichard Milne bt Tom Siddons (Sep 25) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This really was a much closer game than the score line suggest, with most games going to deuce. It took over an hour and 40 minutes to complete the game that contained quite a few lung busting baseline rallies that neither of us was willing to concede. It was like hitting brick wall playing against Tom, everything was coming back which made me play some high risk shots close to the lines. If Tom had played more aggressive top-spin forehand shots earlier on he would have won more games by not allowing me time to dictate the rallies. I will certainly feel it in the morning and I'll need a good rest to prepare for my next game. All the best with your next games and I will look forward to playing you again."  -- Richard

Player Comments:

  • "A fun competitive match despite the dreary conditions. It's always a good challenge against Tom who makes you work for every point. The first 4 games started ominously with Tom breezing through his service games to love and me just scraping through mine. I found some form to take the first set but Tom rallied in the second with some incredible retrieving, killer dropshots and putting away the half-court balls. After some tight games Tom was serving for the second set at 5-4 but I managed to break back and take the final two games with some more aggressive (risky) play. "  -- Thomas
Reveal CommentRichard Milne bt Toby Darroch (Sep 20) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "An extremely tight game, with some high quality serves from Toby and great defending from myself to keep in the point. I managed to produce a number of backhand lobs as a last ditch attempt to win the point that landed just in. This made Toby adapt his game and stay deeper and we had some great baseline rallies. It was a real battle from both of us, a shame that there had to be a loser. Thanks for the game Toby, hopefully we'll play again."  -- Richard
Reveal CommentAlexander Hopkins bt Thomas Hill (Sep 19) 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "They say you only live once, but you get to serve twice. In tennis it seems, redemption is possible. One such redemption story unfolded on court number one at Graves park this Monday, amidst the mists. Tom came out swinging, smashing several impressive winners down the line. He took the set 6-4 and it seemed he was on his way to reversing the loss he suffered at the hands of Alex in the Spin league last month. It seemed done and dusted in the second, with Tom cruising at 5-1. But Alex found something from somewhere. Maybe the mist evoked the foggy Welsh vales he calls home. Maybe an empty Graves park courts whispered to his soul. Either way redemption came. Alex fought back, winning the second 7-6 and the third 6-0. "  -- Alexander

  • "It was difficult conditions to start with as the courts were still very damp and slippery, and there was the worms to contend with. It was Max's first game back after a break from tennis and his honeymoon, so he was obviously a little tired from all that extra marital exercise! Max was hitting some great serves, unfortunately this deserted him from time to time and the double faults mounted up. I managed to hit my spots during the rallies to put Max under pressure, and Max was unlucky at the net with his touch where he tried to be too precise. In the end too many unforced errors took its toll on Max's game which allowed the scoreline look one-sided, which it definitely was not. All the best max with you next games "  -- Richard

Reveal CommentRichard Milne bt Alexander Hopkins (Sep 3) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Conditions on court at the start we're very greasy, resulting in some strange bounces that would catch you out. The first 6 games stayed on serve and it was a very even contest, the first break was crucial and decided the first set. As conditions became very humid the court started dry out. Alex raced off to an early lead and was playing the better, more aggressive game. Unfortunately, for Alex a few badly timed double faults allowed Richard to get a foothold in the game out of nowhere and that changed the momentum. A couple of close line calls decided the outcome, maybe Hawkeye would have ruled in Alex's favour but Alex was very generous and called them in my favour. A good close match, all the best in the rest of your matches."  -- Richard

Player Comments:

  • "Very good and even game with Frank, lots of rallies. A little drizzle made the court slippy at times so both of us were slowed down a bit. Frank reminded me I beat him easily a few years ago, not so this time as he's a much better player and hits and places the ball well so the match was very close, albeit not in great conditions in the second set.
