Collapse AllSouthend Singles - Round 24 | Thursday 28 November 2019 to Wednesday 5 February 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 1 January 2020)

Well over three quarters of the matches were played in this terrific old year/new year round. What a way to start the 2020 tennis season. Thank you all for your commitment and really hope you can play again next round!

Group Summary:

What a brilliant way to defend your crown from the previous round! Ogba and Paul locked horns and played every single available match to take themselves to the top of the table. With equal win/loss records it was all down to their head-to-head to separate them. It went Ogba's way! Meanwhile, more than a nod to Muhammad who beat both the top two in terrific three-setters and only didn't win the group because of a couple of unplayed matches. Just to add, the group has some of the best commentaries of all our leagues.

Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt John George (Feb 3) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The one break of serve in the 1st set was all I required. John's seve was consistent until the 7th game when I broke him. John tried hard to get the break back but my serves full of spin, depth and speed was too much to handle for him today. 6-3 it finished. Second set was more of a breeze through as John could not cope with my aggressive topspins returns b/h and f/h to the corners .Winners.  6-1 it finished. John serve not the speediest in the league but his placement is one of the best I have seen in the league . Keep it up mate and build! Hope to play you next round "  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentPaul Bundock Steel bt Alain Nyama (Jan 31) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "In the first set I was serving and volleying with some success but Alain hit some good backhand passes to keep me honest and pushed me nearly all the way. In the second set neither of us played so well and we made a few more errors. I felt good serving 4-2 up in the second set but lost my focus and Alain took that game. Alain was 40-0 up in the eighth game but I somehow managed to win the next 5 points and go 5-3 up. I kept my focus in the next game for the win. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentJohn George bt Alain Nyama (Jan 28) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Late night match played outdoors in the cold under lights may not have been ideal but both Alain & myself happy to get the game played. Fairly close first set but I managed to get the break in 8th game & served it out. Was 2 - 2 in the second set & Alain broke me in 6th game & 8th game to take it into a decider.. I broke Alain in very 1st game & 3rd game to but as usual then lost my own serve to put a bit of pressure on but managed to get the must needed win as court was starting to get slippery. Good luck in remaining games Alain."  -- John
Reveal CommentMuhammad Noor bt Paul Bundock Steel (Jan 24) 3-6, 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I knew this was going to be a tough match and it didnt disappoint. First set Paul was the better player, i was too passive ,second set i showed more aggression and took the set comfortably ,third set we both tired and it became a bit of a grind with some of Paul volleys letting him down at crucial times. Well played Paul look forward to playing again"  -- Muhammad
Reveal CommentBradley Payne bt Alain Nyama (Jan 24) 6-1, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "In was determined to put a better performance in than the last game which i was too passive!! I started fast with big shots and served and returned well!! Credit to Alain he dug deep second set and put me under pressure!! Was leading 5-4 aswell! But i held on and took it too a tiebreak!! I relaxed and played my tennis again to take the tie break and the match!! Nice to see you again alain!! Good battle"  -- Bradley
Reveal CommentReece Syrett bt John George (Jan 19) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Fair play to John he made life hard for me on court today and credit to how he played , first set John was 5-3 up and 40-15 but failed to put away a forehand and the chance for the set was gone . From this point I re focused and managed to find a bit of quality to win the next 4 games and the set .. 2nd set with John still moving around the court getting balls back I had to find some big shots to put the game to bed eventually taking it 6-3 .. well played John and hope to play you next round "  -- Reece
Reveal CommentMuhammad Noor bt Bradley Payne (Jan 17) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "One of the best matches ive played in a while where everything just seemed to click for me lots of winners even on the backhand wing. Bradley showed flashes of what hes capable of but by even his own admission he wasnt quite on song today. Thanks for the game Brad look forward to playing again! Mo"  -- Muhammad
  • "Well played Mo ! Fully deserved win! I didnt fully show up today but take nothing away from you was a good performance! Look forward to improving next game," -- Bradley
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Reece Syrett (Jan 13) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "First set it was toe for toe. Just the one break and I clinched it. Second set was more the same except at key moment Reece was going more to finish first time ! Had he trade more and be consistent ; then build to finish it would have been a different outcome. Still a good work out Reece, and hope to play you again next round."  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentReece Syrett bt Alain Nyama (Jan 9) 1-6, 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "first set Alain was much more clinical and made few mistakes , and I had no answer to him and he took the set comfortably , into the next and I knew I needed to be more consistent in the tally and make more returns , I felt I managed this and toon the set . Into the last I continued to move well and go for my shots which got me the win in the end , well played hope to play you next round "  -- Reece
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Alain Nyama (Jan 4) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet up with Alain again. It was quite scrappy for Alain as he had not been on court for a while. Serving lots of doubles. However, he made up for it with good back hand and fore hand strokes as the game went on. We will complete on Saturday 4th Jan 7am..."  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentPaul Bundock Steel bt Ross Casson (Jan 3) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It has been a while since I have played Ross so didn't know quite what to expect. I remembered that he gets a lot of balls back like myself. I was quite pleased with some of my volleys in the first set but although the scoreline was the same in both sets, I think the second set was closer. Ross hit some good passes and a couple of very good volleys with one that sticks in my mind. I think it has been over a year since we last played. All the best in your remaining matches Ross."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentBradley Payne bt Reece Syrett (Jan 1) 6-3, 1-6, 7-5

Reveal CommentBradley Payne bt Ogba Ogbimi (Dec 30) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "First set Bradley romped to 4-1 lead! But I fought back to take set 7-5. Bradley was serving well and I was romping everything back! Second set Bradley must have wondering what he had to do! Especially at 4-3! he angled a perfect groundstroke but a deft volley from me made it 4-4! Still Bradley would not give in he battled hard to lead 5-4 and eventually got his due reward breaking my serve to make it 6-4! Third set my mind was elsewhere and Bradley determined was the winner. Hope you survive this league to play you next round. Thanks so much for the game Bradley."  -- Ogba
Ross Casson bt Reece Syrett (Dec 30) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3
Reveal CommentPaul Bundock Steel bt Bradley Payne (Dec 20) 6-1, 7-6 (11-9)

Player Comments:

  • "It was a one-sided affair in the first set as I got off to a good start and Bradley was perhaps finding his feet. The second set was close throughout with service games often getting broken. Bradley made some good passes and I hit some deep lobs to keep me in the set. The tie-break was anyone's and I managed to clinch it in the end after being set point down two or three times. Thank you for the game Bradley and thank you for a lift to and from the venue."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Ross Casson (Dec 17) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A nice welcome back Ross. Good to see you back in the top league. Another exciting duel. First set Ross gave it his all and could have won it. He really battled hard and was playing some very good groundstrokes, particularly forehand . Safe to say my serves got me out of jail numerous times as well as let me down! But second set changed tactics attacking Ross's serves as they drop and was winning volleys ! I also approached the net when serving with speed , seemed to work as my first serve % increased and again had so many volley winners! But well played Ross for a thrilling match and all the best in rest of your matches."  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentPaul Bundock Steel bt John George (Dec 17) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I think it was fair to say that John was not at his best today as the last time we played at Garons, it was a much closer affair. I think though that we were both glad to play indoors. Paul"  -- Paul
Muhammad Noor bt Ross Casson (Dec 15) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4
Reveal CommentMuhammad Noor bt Ogba Ogbimi (Dec 9) 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very even battle at the start. Both of us struggled with the astro turf very windy outside. 5-5 we went indoor on the clay surface. Mo managed to nick the tie break. 2nd set both players have adjusted very well and hitting good groundstrokes. It was hotting up nicely for a classic! I served very well and raced to 4-2. Mo came back 3-4 but I won my serve broke mo's and took the set to a decider. 3rd set mo was pumped up ! Giving himself psyche self talk and it somehow was working for him. Even battle yet again ! 3-3. Led 4-3 and mo came back 4-4. Mo with combination of guile and some good play managed to break my serve. At 5-4 Mo serving, he was struggling I saved 4 match point! But Mo stayed strong for a famous win!. Well done mate" &n
  • "Safe to say every time i step onto the court with Ogba its always a classic. It may not quite be Fedal but its rivalry that has its own uniqueness. Theres something about Ogbas game which brings out the best in me. A match that had everything, it ebbed and flowed, we ended up indoors on clay, my favourite surface .Ogba hit a purple patch towards the end of the second set and midway through the third and when hes on form and his serve and forehand is firing hes difficult to stop, you just have to hang in there. He was also rushing me at the net and volleying crisply In the end it was my probably my craft and mental toughness that got me over the line...only just. Well played Ogba till next time," -- Muhammad
Muhammad Noor bt Reece Syrett (Dec 7) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Paul Bundock Steel (Dec 2) 6-3, 7-6 (7-0)

Player Comments:

  • "What a game of tennis this was! I won the toss and chose to serve, before long I was already 0-3 down! I was still trying to get the right equilibrium. Either my serve was hitting the net or going out wide! Somehow, got the right balance and won the next nine games!. However, Paul came out of his shell, refocused and really took the game to me! Both of us rallying good and hitting the ball well. Paul was retrieving everything back as usual. In the second set he made it 3-3, overtook me and even had chances to tie the set 1-1! He led 5-4, and 6-5! But I was determined not to lose my serve on both occasion. I took the game to tie-break and just upped my level to take the tie-break 7-0! What a match! Paul would always give you a good game!"  -- Ogba

Secured an early break in the 2nd set to go 3-0 up but I could feel Andrew starting to find some rhythm and he stormed back to level at 3-3. From then on he served really well and there were no breaks. I managed to get ahead in the tie break early and just managed to get over the line in the end. Well played."  -- Daniel

I was carrying an ankle injury and Dan was playing with a borrowed racket, but this was still a great match. I started off slow, which allowed Dan to get an early break in the first set.
