Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Ahmed again but this time on indoor acrylic rather than carpet which probably suited Ahmed’s game more. I came out of the blocks much quicker tho and with too many errors coming from Ahmed I quickly raced through the first set for the loss of only one game, a break of my serve. The second set was a much tighter affair however with lots of breaks of serve swinging backwards and forwards with Ahmed threatening a comeback. I managed to steady the ship to get the crucial hold to make it 5-3 and break one last time to take the match but it was very tough going. Well played mate."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentDaniel Kellard bt A Magid Wanas (May 16) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Magid again. I don’t think both of us played particularly well. Lots of unforced errors. I was just more consistent. Good Luck for your other matches."  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentIan Wright bt Daniel Kellard (May 2) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect conditions in Basildon this morning despite the early start and I very quickly settled into the groove on the tarmac courts there....Dan seemed to be struggling a bit on both wings today tho and my consistency and depth of shot was definitely causing him problems so I quickly took hold and raced through the first set for the loss of only one game...Things didn’t get any easier for him in the second set and apart from one break point in the last game couldn’t find the shots to break me out of my rhythm nor stop me from winning the set 6-0. Thanks for the game tho mate and I’m sure you’ll be on better form next time."  -- Ian

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Madji. You met me in top shape today. Hope we have another game soon."  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentIan Wright bt Ogba Ogbimi (Apr 19) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good to be back on court against Ogba in the league and at my local club Great Baddow and i felt i had something to prove after losing our last match despite having a match point. I was a bit fortunate today as Ogba was still a bit rusty from lockdown and by his own admission was missing too many easy balls, especially on the forehand side which gave me several chances to break and i generally made him pay, even a below par Ogba is pretty formidable tho so as i was expecting he still made things very difficult especially with some amazing vollies. On the day tho my serve proved much more consistent than Ogba's and it proved the difference over two tough sets. Thanks for the game and i look forward to our next battle Ogba."  -- Ian

  • "Always a pleasure to play against Brad. Such a talented tennis player and with great sportsmanship. Unfortunately, he had a knee injury that prevented him from playing at his best. All the best in his upcoming rounds."  -- A Magid

Reveal CommentJohn George bt George Brounos (May 20) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Haven't played George for ages so good to catch up at a very windy Priory Park. I got off to a good start after a lengthy 1st service game & quickly went 5 - 2 up but George fought back to 5 - 4 before I just managed to win it 6 - 4. 2nd set was interrupted owing to courts being taken but we switched venue to Gunners Park to finish the match which a hard fought tie break win for me after George had a chance to serve for the set at 6 - 5. Good tough close match with some good rallies in tough conditions. Best of luck in remaining games & see you again soon George."  -- John
Reveal CommentGeorge Brounos bt Andrew Phillips (May 16) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We hoped to play indoors but the rules still didnt allow it (we were a day too early for that). The outdoor court was a little slippery in the first set with both players falling once. First set was locked at 2-2 and very close then I strung some games together with some consistent play. 2nd set Andrew was going for winners which was tough to do in the conditions, and I ended up winning with a comfortable scoreline but it really was a lot closer than the score suggested Best of luck in your remaining games Andrew"  -- George

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Andrew & have a good natter about football. Close match in both sets where the serving was hit & miss from both of us. 2ns set Andrew should have won at 5 - 3 up but I managed to rattle off 4 games to win. Best of luck in remaining games."  -- John

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely weather at Invicta & our 1st meeting at this venue. I got off to a flier winning both opening games to love. Unusually I served quite consistently & won the set 6 - 3 with Rob not quite at his best. 2nd set started with 4 breaks of serve at 2 - 2 but then I won 3 straight games to almost win the match. Great to play Rob & have a good natter. No doubt he will find his form next time. Good luck."  -- John

Player Comments:

  • "TBC due to rain. We started off hoping to beat the rain but it started coming down heavy after an hour or so. I started off very slow and stuff and Jonah moved into a 3-1 lead. Then I decided to wake up and I won the next 8 games on a row before the court became too slippery to continue."  -- Dan
  • "We managed to finish the match off today in vastly contrasting conditions to which it was started. Glorious sunshine and some nice tennis. Jonah upped his game from the first time we met and his serving was on point, bashing a few past me. But having held a 3-0 lead from the original meeting I knew I didn’t need to do anything silly and so managed to serve out to complete a nice win. Would have been much closer if the full match had been played today. Well played Jonah. See you next time." -- Dan
Reveal CommentJonah Graham bt Ian Fraser (May 31) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Despite both of us being injured, it was some great tennis being played on the court. Ian was a tough contender and I did all I could to keep him running about the court "  -- Jonah
Reveal CommentTim Staines bt Ian Fraser (May 22) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Having played Ian a couple of years ago, it was good to meet up again to play our match. Ian played well, but I was helped by the fact my lobs were annoyingly accurate for the most part ! Ian took a 2:1 lead in the second set, but I fought back to take the set. An enjoyable match, played in great spirit. Best wishes, Ian, for your remaining matches. "  -- Tim
Reveal CommentDavid Bosquette bt Ian Fraser (May 12) 5-7 Ian Fraser Retired

Player Comments:

  • "What a real treat to meet and play Ian again after a number of years. Ian unfortunately had a slight thigh niggle after completion of the first set and understandably didn't want to take any chances with matches left to play. Have to say the one set we did play was long and really enjoyable with lots of interesting rallies. Best wishes Ian with your upcoming matches and look forward to playing you again. Won't leave it so long this time!"  -- David
Reveal CommentTim Staines bt Danny Ramsay (May 11) 0-6, 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was the most topsy-turvy of matches ! Danny started very effectively, whilst I was very poor. Gradually the match swung round, due largely to me wearing Danny down. My thanks to Danny for continuing to play whilst suffering as his energy ran out. It was good to meet up again after a number of years. Best wishes for your future matches, Danny. "  -- Tim
Reveal CommentTim Staines bt Dan Church (May 1) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to meet up and play a match with Dan again. Priory Park was windy again, but we both played the conditions well - the wind added that extra slice to some of our shots. Best wishes for your remaining matches, Dan !"  -- Tim
Reveal CommentDan Church bt Danny Ramsay (Apr 24) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very challenging match played on what looked at first glance like a nice carpet court but it was pretty dead which led to a lot of balls dying on us or holding up pretty short. Coupled with bright blinding sunshine and a blustery wind, it made for a very scrappy and bitty game. Other than that it was nice to play Danny again who was a bit rusty after not playing for a year or so and I had the benefit of playing in midweek. No holds of serve for the first 5 or 6 games and Danny held firm to take the first set 6-4. I enjoyed a bit of a resurgence in the 2nd and took it 6-2. The 3rd was very closely contested and went to 4-4. It could have gone either way but I managed to hold my serve to nick it. Well played Danny and see you next time."  -- Dan
Reveal CommentTim Staines bt David Bosquette (Apr 24) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to meet David for the first time. Excellent weather, with the occasional gust of wind. We were both a bit rusty and coming back to fitness, but at least the long rallies will have helped the latter ! Best wishes to you, David, in your remaining matches."  -- Tim

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentDavid Bosquette bt Dan Church (Apr 20) 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Was great to play Dan again after such a gap since our last match. This was tight match that could have gone either way. Dan deservedly took the first set on the tie break and I hade a four love lead in the second only for Dan to peg me back to 4-3. Managed to hold on and take it to a decider. Both of us were feeling worse for wear at that point but managed to stay ahead in the third and close out the match. Two hours of fun tennis, some nice rallies and a much needed workout. Best of luck Dan in your next matches. Hope to play again soon. David. "  -- David
Reveal CommentTim Staines bt Jonah Graham (Apr 17) 4-6, 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to meet up with Jonah again, and to get back playing. Jonah a real gent as before. Both of us were pretty rusty and needed some games before we got back into the swing - literally ! Garons closed as I was 5:1 up in the third, and Jonah kindly conceded the match. (We had already switched from indoor to outdoor.) All the best to Jonah in his remaining matches."  -- Tim
Reveal CommentDavid Bosquette bt Jonah Graham (Apr 16) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It's been a while for me playing the league and it feels really great to be back! What an absolute pleasure to play Jonah in the Spring evening sunshine. This was an Ireland V Canada clash where both of us needed to dust off the lockdown cobwebs. That score does not reflect the competitiveness of both sets. We had some beautiful rallies indeed and Jonah has a volley worthy of note! We left the court both buoyed by the match and looking forward to more to come! Best wishes Jonah for your next matches."  -- David
