Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet and play Andrew for the first time and also a chance for him to try out the carpet courts at David Lloyd….Andrew hit plenty of decent serves tonight but was then guilty of rushing too much in the rallies that followed, trying to hit quick winners that unfortunately weren’t coming off so that coupled with my consistency ultimately made it a tough night for him. Appreciated the game tho and warm down afterwards Andrew, best of luck with your remaining matches."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Andrew Phillips (Oct 10) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "My first ever game with Andrew. Didn't know what to expect. I did see score with other players but did not read much into it. Really nice gentle man. Andrew showed more intensity, anticipation and recovery into good position second set. I am sure we will surely cross paths again! All the best in the remainder of your matches"  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentPaul Bundock Steel bt Andrew Phillips (Oct 5) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was a good game tonight. I thought Andrew served quite well and I served ok with a few double faults. There were a couple of games that Andrew could have won in the first set so it was a little closer than the score suggests. In the second set neither of us played particularly well but as Andrew admitted, lost a bit of steam. Thanks Andrew for a nice game."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentIan Wright bt Paul Bundock Steel (Oct 4) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Tonight Paul seemed determined to avenge the bad loss from last time we played and in my first 2 service games i must have faced at least half a dozen break points and also lost a few game points but i somehow clung on and then turned the tables to take a 3-1 lead and eventually a tricky first set 6-2, i started winning my service games more easily second set and with Paul struggling to get many first serves in i again took a 3-1 lead then backed it up with another break to leave me serving for the match at 5-1, Paul dug in one last time to go 40-0 up on my serve but again i was able to claw it back to take the game and match in what was a harsh scoreline considering how much of a battle it was at times. Thanks for the game Paul."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Ian Wright (Sep 23) 6-2, 5-7, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Always a good match with Ian. First set some scintillating tennis display. I didn't put a foot wrong and quickly I wrapped the set. 2nd set, I started missing a lot of balls on my fore hand side! Before I knew it Ian was 5-2 up! I self talked myself into the game , dug deep to make it 5-5! Ian however found a way to hold on to win the set. Third set, was an almost perfect or immaculate game of tennis up to 4-0 up I led. But then errors started creeping in and well done to Ian he sensed the tides changing and really punished me! He played some fabulous top spin and really pummeled the ball to the corners and he was firm to 4-4! I was thinking it was not my day. But again I dug deep and held firm to break Ian and win 7-5 !" -- Ogba
  • "Another bruiser with Ogba but a great battle, the crux of the match for me was when he came back from 2-5 second set to extend it to 7-5, i won that battle but lost the war as the momentum carried him to 4-0 third set which was a game too far even tho i initially pegged it back. Well played mate, already looking forward to our next match at Baddow." -- Ian

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Andrew as it had been a few years since we played previous .. tonight though I felt was a very lacklustre showing from me and I couldn’t find and movement or intensity , fair play to Andrew for hanging in there and making the scoreline tight , luckily I still had enough to get the win , well played "  -- Reece
Reveal CommentPaul Bundock Steel bt Daniel Kellard (Sep 9) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It's a long time cliche but the score does not reflect the match and the number of points won on either side. There were at least 5 games that went to deuce and sometimes there were 3 or 4 deuces. I felt comfortable in the first set but I lost my way in the second set and Daniel had a chance to go 3-0 up. Once I got to 2-1 down, I started to come back and rolled off the next 5 games. Thank you Daniel for a pleasant game of tennis with some great rallies. Let's hope you have done enough to stay up."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Reece Syrett (Sep 8) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I have to say Reece came well prepared. 1st set I didn't know what hit me! Reece made very few errors and very convincing in his groundstrokes. 2nd set, errors started creeping in a lot, partly due to my change of intensity. I was putting a shift and not allowing Reece any angles to work with. Stroking the ball well to all available corners. 3rd, set Reece was getting the treatment, I continued striking the ball well and Reece was really struggling in the rallies. Saying that I went 4:0 up but Reece used all he had in the tank to make it 4:4! In the end it was many games too far. Well done Reece and all the best in the rest of your matches. "  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentDaniel Kellard bt Andrew Phillips (Sep 3) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to catch up with Andy after a couple of years. He struggled to get his serve going which I remember can be a real weapon. I was given a lot of free points through double faults which meant I was always ahead on the scoreboard. Well Playedand good luck for the remaining games."  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDaniel Kellard bt Reece Syrett (Sep 2) 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A really competitive match against Reece and one I thought had got away like so many have done before. I started well dominating most of the rallies and at 5-3 I just had to hold my serve. I’ve been there before against Reece though and once again I faltered. Reece tightened up his game and the Set went to him. 2nd Set I was broken early and it seemed like history repeating itself again. I kept myself in the hunt even though I was a break down. At 4-3 I managed to level and even though I got broke again I got to the tie break breaking when Reece was serving for the match. I for once managed to get over the line by a narrow margin. 3rd Set I had the momentum and raced into 4-0 lead before Reece conceded. Well Played Mate."  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Another good match with Paul despite what the scoreline suggesting. It was a gruelling match , high intensity and good rallies particularly in the first set. Second set, Paul somehow capitulated. To be fair I have been playing lots of high intensity matches since Tuesday and Paul has not really played lots of singles recently. I am looking forward to our next one! All the best in the rest of your other matches though."  -- Ogba

Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Daniel Kellard (Sep 1) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a more improved Daniel from last time out. He was very focused 1st set and read my game very well. No surprise he took the set as I was quite fatigued from 5 set from club competition night before. 2nd set I was battling and determined to get even and my step up acceleration paid off. By the 3rd set Daniel was now fatigued himself. The winners he was getting in 1st and 2nd sets he was now playing out wide gifting me points. I capitalised on the errors and more consistent on my ground strokes won me the match. A gruelling match. All the best in rest of your games Daniel"  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentIan Wright bt Daniel Kellard (Aug 31) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Definitely a game of two halves with Dan today. First set I didn’t really put a foot wrong so coupled with too many errors from Dan plus a few game point chances he missed meant I raced through the set 6-0. Second set however Dan totally upped his game and played some very consistent attacking tennis to match me game for game and even when I broke to go 4-2 he broke straight back and held. I managed to get the all important break with Dan serving at 4-5 but overall a very tough set. Well played mate."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Ade Serrano (Aug 29) 4-6, 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "1st set, serves were all out of sorts. Not clicking at all! And much as I try hard to neutralise Ade's serves, I just couldn't!. Ade, got the decisive break built on it and won first set 6-4. 2nd set, I started very well. Serving + volleying and really angling my ground stokes to the corners especially Ade's backhand. I was soon 5-1 up! and able to neutralise Ade's serves also. However, I somehow lost my focus and Ade came close to 5-5 but I was able to hold on for a 6-4 win. 3rd set, I continued the intensity and was 3-0 love up! with some very intricate and focused play! Unfortunately, Ade had to retired. I hope you are able to complete rest of your games mate"  --
Reveal CommentIan Wright bt Reece Syrett (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Always good to play Reece (and we've played each other a lot recently) but today definitely wasn't one of our better matches as it contained about 10 breaks of serve between us but more through errors than winning shots...I got an early 3-0 lead first set with two breaks and even tho Reece got one of those back i was able to hold on to see out the set, second set my serve completely disappeared early on and with Reece breaking me twice to be serving at 4-1 the set looked over but somehow i found enough to stop the rot and break back 3 times to take the match as Reece picked the worst time for his form to dip. Should have been a three setter so i'm relieved to get the win but definitely unlucky today mate."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentIan Wright bt Ade Serrano (Aug 26) 6-2, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Great first game back against Ade today, first four games were competitive with a break apiece but from there on in i carved out enough chances to break him twice more to take the set 6-2 ...The last game of the set was a break so i felt i had an advantage in serving first again and with Ade serving to stay in the match late on i sniffed a chance and quickly got to 0-40 on his serve, however as Ade has done a few times in the past holding his nerve to save 4 match points, then breaking me to leave him serving for the set instead...2 break points came my way then a set point for Ade before i took the match into a tiebreak where i was fortunate to take a 6-0 lead to finally give some breathing space to see out the match. Well played mate."  -- Ian

Some good rallies & not so good rallies were played but I have to mention the 4 very lucky net chords afforded to me by the tennis god's today. Player Comments:

  • "A good competitive game with Paul again, despite us being hampered by 30mph gusts of wind. For example, I hit a topspin lob that started on Paul's backhand, suddenly veered off going parallel to the base line, ending up beyond Paul's forehand reach! The first set we were either level or one of us a game up, but fortunately I played well in the tiebreak going 5-1 up, which was a bit too far ahead for Paul to catch up. I went 3-1 up 2nd set, Paul played well to equal at 3-3, but I just managed to keep the edge on the game and got the set 6-3. A good game Paul, and I look forward to our next meet."  -- Maddie

  • "2nd meeting between Dave & myself & both matches played in a similar manner. A few long service games for me but managed to hold on to win it 6 - 3. Second was very close with some good long rallies. I managed to break in 8th game to go 5 - 3 but Dave broke back twice to go into a tie break. I raced into a 5 - 1 lead but typically struggled to get over the winning line as some great shots by Dave got him back to 5 - 6 before I finally found a way to win. A nice friendly match with a few good chats. Best of luck in remaining games. "  -- John

  • "The first set was very frustrated for me. Apart from the 8th game. I should have broken Ian serve several times before then. For some reason I could not return Ian second serve in the first set. In the beginning of the second set I was still thinking about the first set and Ian race into a 1-3 lead. I got my compose back and start to move Ian around the court and it paid off, Ian was getting tired and I eventually won the next 2 sets by 6 games to 4. If I am going to get better I need to make better decisions on court in match play. Ian good luck in your remaining matches. "  -- Danny

Player Comments:

  • "If I had to put the match in 3 words: grueling, tenacious, and enjoyable. Ian, despite have been off the courts for some time, came back in full force. His first serve was on and had me on my toes. Ian and I were rather tenacious when it came to the final points of each game, pushing them to deuce and then a tug-of-war match back and forth. This pushed the first set, from what I thought was a clear victory of 5-3 back to Ian's win in a tie break set that just seemed to never stop teetering. We were both knackered going into the 2nd set but pressed on to continue. Despite the score showing 6-2 for the second set, each game was extremely close or going to deuce. Well played Ian and best of luck on your future games!"  -- Jonah

Player Comments:

  • "It was a wonderful match played against Ali. Having both started playing around the same time, 2 years ago, it was great to play to show off what we had both learned in these years of play. Lots of deuces and battles for match points, leading both of us to try some riskier plays followed by the other hitting a more challenging shot back. Ali has a solid serve that caught me by surprise, forcing me to develop my service game to get points back. Fortunately, taking to the net added on the pressure which helped me to just push for that win. Great match, I really enjoyed it Ali!"  -- Jonah

  • "It was good to meet Nigel for the first time. I did not know what to expect, regarding how he would play. I won the toss and ask Nigel to serve. I broke him and had control of the se, until 9 game when I was serving for the set. I got a bit tight and loss it. I won the next 2 games to win the set 7-5. The next set i race ahead to a 4-0 lead. Nigel had other plans and he attacked every ball and most of his shoots were winners. I was thinking this could not continue. I took control of the set again and won the next 2 games to win 6-3. - Nigel good luck and your next games. I hope we can play again on a social level very soon. Danny"  -- Danny

He still gave me a challenge though as his serve had a lot of slice to it so at one point it was pretty much a drop shot. I totally lost it on one service game and handed a game to Muhammad and then didn't win the next one through a bit of frustration and some awkward balls from Muhammad. I wish him all the best though and I know he will be tougher to beat in the future."  -- Lee

Iv not played Danny before so I couldn't tell how he would normally play but he definitely seemed pretty frustrated that he wasn't playing aswell as he would have liked. I felt like I served pretty well today and got some good free points from that and a couple of winners but Danny struggled with consistency so most of the games went my way. Muhammad broke my serve and held his. I won my serve to win the first set 6-2. The next 4 games were more even. I then took control of the second set and eventually won 6-2. When you play a tennis match against Jonah you know that he will not give up and will chase every ball down. Mid way through the first set I took control and was on course to win it, but Jonah had other ideas and was not going to give up. He was 5-3 down and won the nest 4 games and the set 5-7. I won the second set comfortable 6-3. Jonah won the first 2 games of the final set. I took control and went ahead 5-3 and was serving for the match, broke me and was serving to stay in the final set, but i won it in the end 6-4. the match was exhausting, but enjoyable.
